Walmart Is Finally Making The Checkout Change Shoppers Have Been Waiting For

I've become so reliant on Apple Pay that I rarely bring my wallet out for simple errands. And the only time I've run into a problem with that strategy has been at the Walmart checkout, where it's not accepted—a detail I realized when I saddled up to the register without a single backup method to pay for my groceries .
Finally, the mega-retailer is changing that. On Friday, August 21, Walmart announced plans to roll out contactless payments, including Apple Pay, by the end of this year.
"We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them," Walmart said in a press release. "Now, beginning Aug. 24, we will be adding Tap to Pay to our payment options at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations, with plans to roll it out to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and to fuel stations by mid-2027."
While nearly every other retailer had already embraced this new tap-to-pay frontier, Walmart was a notable holdout—despite the fact that Apple Pay and similar programs have streamlined the entire checkout process. The retailer did, however, have its own contactless payment method, which was offered exclusively through the Walmart app.
"It all comes back to giving customers and members more choice and making everyday shopping a little easier—from how they manage their money to how they pay at checkout," Walmart added in the statement.
