They evaluated them on design, ease of installation, cleaning capabilities and reach. We also asked our testers to report back on durability and any required upkeep, because we believe the best home products are well-designed and easy to maintain.

• Feel:Testers rated water pressure strength and flow patterns, and they noted how many passes it took to rinse soap or shampoo from their bodies and hair.

• Reach:Testers rated how well they could angle fixed shower heads and extend and maneuver handheld options.

• Maintenance:Testers rated ease of installation and cleaning, noting build quality and any parts (such as filters) that will need replacing.

Other shower heads we tested

Hopopro High-Pressure Shower Head :This fixed shower head is an Amazon top-seller for its sleek design, budget-friendly price tag and five spray settings. It also comes in a huge range of finishes. The tester who reviewed it said it was quick and easy to install (it even came with a wrench), but that she wasn't able to achieve the water pressure she's experienced with other shower heads.

Jolie Filtered Shower Head :Like the Canopy, this shower head features a filter designed to remove chlorine and other impurities that should be replaced every 90 days. Our tester found the shower head easy to install and the water pressure sufficient, but not as strong as some other shower heads she's used. We ultimately went with the Canopy as our top filtered pick because it doubles as a handheld and a massager for less. But the Jolie does come in five finishes, including bright red, if you'd prefer a fixed shower head with a little more personality.

Kohler Purist Single-Function Shower Head :This shower head from Kohler looks expensive and is available in eight finishes. According to the staffer who reviewed it (and has owned it for several years), it's easy to adjust and clean. She describes the water pressure as sufficient, but wishes it were a little stronger, especially as there's only one spray setting.

Kohler Forté Multifunction Shower Head :Here you get three spray settings and five finishes. Our tester had no problem setting it up and says it's easy to wipe clean. She likes the feel of the Rain Shower mode, but had to use the Massage setting to get all of her shampoo out (and describes Cloud mode as more of a light misting). She says the settings can be difficult to see if you want to change them while keeping the water running.

Moen Attract Magnetix Rainshower Combo :This dual shower head features a larger fixed shower head and a smaller detachable shower head that can be used as a handheld. According to the tester, installation was fairly intuitive. She describes water pressure on the fixed rainfall head as slightly underwhelming and said the smaller shower head, though it offers a stronger flow, is more ideal for handheld use or someone who's shorter. She also notes that the lever that switches between the main shower head and the handheld may be a bit of a reach for shorter users.

How do you install a shower head?

Most shower heads screw onto the end of the metal arm that sticks out from your shower wall. If you can't remove your old one using just your hand, a wrench and some adjustable pliers may help. Many brands also recommend applying plumber's tape around the threads of the new shower head before screwing it back on for a tighter seal.

How do you clean a shower head?

"Regularly cleaning shower heads and sink faucets improves water pressure, prevents bacteria buildup and extends the life of your fixtures," explains Robin Murphy, a professional cleaner at Maid Brigade and author of Who Likes It Dirty? "Hard water deposits can clog tiny openings, reducing efficiency and even affecting water quality. Over time, biofilm and mold can also develop inside the fixture, especially in humid environments."

Murphy recommends filling a plastic bag with white vinegar (enough to fully submerge the fixture), then securing the bag over it with a rubber band or twist tie. Let it soak for a few hours, or overnight for heavy buildup, then remove the bag, scrub the shower head with an old toothbrush and rinse everything thoroughly. "For stubborn clogs, use a toothpick or needle to clear debris," she adds. "Finish by buffing with a microfiber towel for a streak-free shine."
