Unless you've been living under a rock (or sleeping on an ancient spring mattress that could use replacing), you're probably at least a little bit familiar with memory foam. Developed in the 1960s by a NASA researcher, memory foam (or, its technical name, viscoelastic polyurethane) has slowly made its way into everything from wheelchairs and sports equipment to mattresses and — why we're here — pillows, thanks to its body-contouring, pressure-relieving capabilities. The best memory foam pillows are not just cushy and supportive, but they also respond to your every move. They also come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and many are even adjustable.

As a senior home editor at Yahoo, I, along with my colleagues, have spent the past few months sinking into options (quite literally). All in all, we've tested more than a dozen memory foam bed pillows , assessing them for look, feel, responsiveness and cooling properties. Whether you're seeking a solid foam pillow that specializes in stability or a shredded foam pillow that offers a bit more flexibility, you've come to the right place.

Best memory foam pillows for 2026

Kristin Granero/Yahoo

Cover material:Viscose | Fill:Shredded memory foam (also comes with 1" and 2" solid memory foam cushions) | Dimensions:17" x 24" (standard); 17" x 34" (king) | Care instructions:Machine-wash exterior and/or interior covers, tumble dry on low | Adjustable:Yes

What we liked:This Luxome pillow offers a truly customizable experience. The cover opens to reveal two thinner pillows stacked on top of one another; one is filled with fluffy cotton, and the other with gel-infused shredded memory foam. This is a BYO (build-your-own) pillow, as it also comes with 1- and 2-inch-thick solid memory foam inserts that can be swapped in to lower the height and add more firmness. (A low profile is recommended for back sleepers , and especially stomach sleepers, who need as flat a pillow as possible.)

The viscose cover, which the brand says is derived from bamboo, felt ultra-soft — and slightly cool, though not cold — to the touch. The cotton insert felt plush and what I'd consider medium-firm. The gel-infused shredded memory foam insert felt slightly cushier and cooler. It was also more adaptive, cradling my head and neck like you'd expect from memory foam (though not as rigidly as a solid memory foam).

Luxome's Layr measures 6.5 inches tall with both cushions in place, which didn't feel too high given the shredded memory foam's adaptability. This was my favorite fill to sleep on because it allowed for my head and neck to sink in a bit. I'm 5'4" and found the fit to be perfect for side-sleeping (and sufficient for back-sleeping, should you, like me, find yourself turning in the night). That said, the beauty of this pillow is that you can adjust it, even removing some of the shredded memory foam filling, if it's too high.

After I slept on this pillow for several nights — with the shredded memory foam/cotton cushion combo for side-sleeping and the shredded memory foam/solid foam combo for back-sleeping — it didn't show any signs of losing its shape or cushiness. Bonus: The exterior and interior pillow covers are machine-washable, and the pillow comes with a reusable bag for storing any stuffing if you decide to remove it.

Minor criticisms:At $150 for a single pillow (or $225 for a set), the Luxome Layr Pillow is definitely a splurge. But given that I also consider it the best luxury memory foam pillow, it's still more affordable than many options in that category. If you opt for the discounted two-pack, be aware that you get only one of each solid memory foam insert, so you and your partner will have to share them.

Pros
  • Slightly contouring, while remaining cushy and flexible
  • Completely customizable
  • Machine-washable pillow covers
  • Oeko-Tex and CertiPUR-US-certified
Cons
  • Not as cooling as some pillows we tested
  • The two-pack comes with only one set of solid foam inserts so you have to share

Cover material:Viscose, polyester | Fill:Shredded memory foam, polyester | Dimensions:20" x 30" (queen); 20" x 36" (king) | Care instructions:Machine-wash cover in cold water on gentle cycle, tumble dry on low; every six months, insert pillow into the dryer and run on low for 10-15 minutes | Adjustable:Yes

What we liked:For a more conventional shredded memory foam pillow, I found myself gravitating toward this Lagoon option time and time again. The fill is made of a shredded memory foam-polyester blend and was among the spongiest and most supportive I tested — soft enough to contour to the shape of my head and neck but firm enough that I felt supported.

I measured this pillow's thickness at 5.5 inches upon arrival, which I found ideal for sleeping on my back (I don't sleep on my stomach much, but it felt comfortable when I tested it). I then (very easily and evenly) added the additional fill that came with this pillow, which brought the thickness to about 7 inches. I found this perfect for sleeping on my side and still comfortable for sleeping on my back when I naturally rotated.

I tested the queen-size pillow, which at 20-by-30 inches was more than large enough for me to rest my head and neck, with room for some movement. Each time I lifted my head, the material quickly snapped back into place — and after several nights of sleeping on this pillow, I didn't notice any difference in its cushiness or shape.

What else won me over? This pillow comes with a cylinder-shaped storage bag for easy traveling. And with the fill removed, the cover is both washer- and dryer-friendly for easy cleaning.

Minor criticisms:This pillow will cost you a pretty penny. While I didn't feel hot while sleeping on it, the pillow doesn't provide any cooling. And given its larger size, you'll need a queen-sized pillowcase. I tried to get away with a standard size, and the pillow stuck by about an inch.

Pros
  • Contouring and stable, while remaining cushy
  • Adjustable, with extra shredded memory foam pack
  • Machine-washable cover (and can put entire pillow in dryer)
  • CertiPUR-US-certified
Cons
  • Breathable, but not as cooling as some pillows we tested
  • Doesn't fit in a standard-size pillowcase

Kristin Granero/Yahoo

Cover material:Unlisted | Fill:Shredded memory foam | Dimensions:15" x 27" (queen); 17" x 30" (king) | Care instructions:Machine-wash cover, tumble dry on low | Adjustable:Yes

What we liked:If you are a tried-and-true side-sleeper, a crescent-shaped pillow can help fill the gap between your neck and shoulders for improving spinal alignment and reducing pressure points. And this one from Honeydew hit the sweet spot in my testing for size, cushiness and adaptiveness.

The cover is made of a silky-smooth fabric that feels slightly cool to the touch and is quilted for added comfort. The shredded gel-memory foam fill was what I'd consider the perfect mix of firm and bouncy: It had just enough give to offer some light contouring around the head and neck, without making me feel stuck or like I was sinking.

I measured the Honeydew pillow at 5.5 inches tall out of the box, which fell in the middle of the crescent-shaped pillows I tested and supported my natural spine alignment. At 15-by-27 inches, Honeydew's side-sleeper pillow wasn't as large as some of the others I evaluated, but I found it offered more than enough room for my head and neck and occasional movement.

After several nights of sleep testing, I measured the pillow as I did with all the others, and it appeared to have retained its full height. And like those above, this pillow is fairly easy to maintain: Just machine-wash (and tumble dry) the cover when it needs refreshing.

Minor criticisms:At $180, this pillow has the highest retail price of my top picks, though I've noticed it goes on sale pretty regularly, typically for $130 or less. While responsive, it doesn't have quite as much give as the Lagoon pillow. I appreciated how, despite being queen-size, this pillow fit into my standard pillowcase, but I'd take another 2 inches in length for a little more wiggle room if given the choice.

Pros
  • Slightly responsive, but stable (medium-firm), with a cushy cover
  • Hidden zipper lets you add or remove fill if needed
  • Machine-washable cover
  • CertiPUR-US certified
Cons
  • Pricey
  • On the smaller side

Lisa Schweitzer/Yahoo

Cover material:Polyester | Fill:Solid memory foam | Dimensions:15.75" x 24" (queen); 15.75" x 31.5" | Care instructions:Machine-wash cover in cold, tumble dry on cool or air-dry | Adjustable:No

What we liked:According to Tempur-Pedic, the Tempur-Cloud Memory Foam Pillow is the brand's most popular. As senior home writer and my fellow tester Lisa Schweitzer points out in her review , it has 4.5 stars from over 7,500 reviewers who credit the cushion with quality slumber.

This pillow is made of a single block of memory foam (as opposed to the shredded foam or hybrid materials seen in those above), but as a side-sleeper, Schweitzer says she found it to offer just the right amount of firmness. "My head sank into it a bit, but I felt supported and stayed cool throughout the night," she shares. This was the lightest-weight pillow of the four Tempur-Cloud models she tried, a plus if the weight and bulk of traditional memory foam pillows bother you.

Despite being solid memory foam, which can trap heat more than shredded memory foam and some other fill materials, Schweitzer confirms that this pillow stayed cool throughout the night. Among other pros: The cover is machine-washable, and the pillow as a whole is fairly affordable, especially for a memory foam pillow from such a well-known, beloved brand.

Minor criticisms:Unlike the pillows above, this pillow isn't adjustable for cushiness or height. And as Schweitzer notes, this pillow is only 5 inches thick, which felt comfortable to her but may be too thin for some side sleepers.

Pros
  • Supported head and neck without being too lofty
  • Stayed cool all night
  • Machine-washable cover
  • One of the most affordable Tempur-Pedic pillows available
Cons
  • Not adjustable
  • May be too thin for side sleepers

Cover material:Polyethlyene, polyester, spandex | Fill:Polyester, lyocell | Dimensions:16" x 22"(standard); 16" x 32" (king) | Care instructions:Machine wash cover on cold, tumble dry low; spot-clean fill | Adjustable:No

What we liked:Sleep Number made a name for itself with its customizable mattresses, and its pillows are similarly adaptable. Filled with a memory-foam blend, the True Temp Plush comes in three shapes — we tried the Classic, which looks like a standard pillow and is recommended for stomach or back sleepers; there's also the Contour (recommended for side and back sleepers) and the Ultimate, which comes with removable inserts (recommended for all sleeping positions).

The core of the fill is lyocell fibers encased in memory foam, all of which is contained by a cotton jersey cover. Then a cool-to-the-touch polyethylene/polyester/spandex removable cover zips over it. The blend of foam and fiber makes this pillow somewhat bouncy, not too firm and cooling enough that Schweitzer slept comfortably all night.

This pillow is also compressible and can get quite small, which makes it packable for travel and a boon for anyone who does not love a super-firm pillow. It provided adequate neck support too.

Minor criticisms:Schweitzer is petite and found that while this pillow is low-profile compared to some others we tried, its loft was not ideal for her as a side sleeper. On a related note, the pillow itself is smaller than some other standard-size pillows we tested, making it less appealing for those with larger body types.

Pros
  • Five-year warranty
  • Packable
  • Cover is machine-washable
  • Memory-foam blend keeps the pillow somewhat compressible
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100-certified
Cons
  • Pillow insert is spot-clean only
  • Fairly small

Factors to consider when choosing a memory foam pillow

  • Fill/memory foam type:Solid memory foam, consisting of a dense block, tends to provide more support and stability, while shredded memory foam offers greater flexibility and breathability. "Heavy people may find that shredded foam doesn't support them as well as a solid memory foam surface would," explains Dr. Gbolahan Okubadejo, an orthopedic and spinal surgeon and founder of The Institute for Comprehensive Spine Care . Alternatively, he says he'd recommend shredded memory foam to "most people who sleep hot, toss and turn, or want some cushion without the sinking feeling."

  • Dimensions:Wider pillows allow for more wiggle room, especially for those with larger frames. When it comes to height (or thickness), Dr. Theresa Marko, American Physical Therapy Association spokesperson and founder of Marko Physical Therapy PLLC in New York City, notes that thin pillows provide cushioning without altering spinal alignment, while thick pillows fill the spaces created by the natural curvature of the spine and hips. "When you're on your back, you want to fill up the space that is often created underneath your neck between the shoulders and your neck," she advises. "Same with sleeping on your side — you need to take up the amount of space from your shoulder to your head/neck, and that is going to be different for everyone since we all have different body sizes."

  • Firmness:Memory foam is generally firm, though shredded memory foam has more give. The upside of a firm pillow is that it typically maintains shape and offers the most support, explains Marko. For back sleepers, a lower, firm pillow often works best, says Okubadejo, supporting the natural curve of your neck without pushing your head too far forward.

  • Care instructions:Many of the pillows we tested feature machine-washable covers for easy cleaning. Remember to always remove pillow fill before doing so, unless otherwise instructed.

  • Adjustability:A lot of brands now offer adjustable pillows, with extra pillow pads and/or fill so that you can customize the height and/or cushiness of your pillow — either initially or with time as needed. As a general rule, as long as the pillow case has a zipper, you can "flatten" any shredded foam pillow by simply removing some of the fill.

  • Cooling technology:Given their warmer nature, many foam pillows are now infused or layered with gel, says Okubadejo. Opting for a percale or viscose pillowcase, or one designed with cooling technology, can also help keep you dry throughout the night.

  • Certifications: Oeko-Tex , Made Safe , Greenguard Gold and CertiPUR-US-certified products must meet certain safety standards, and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic products must meet a list of established criteria for ecological and social responsibility.

How we test pillows

My fellow Yahoo home editors and I put each pillow through a series of tests to see if it deserves a spot on your bed. Here is a quick rundown:

  • Design:After we unbox each pillow, we note how fast the pillow takes its proper shape and if there are any imperfections. We put the pillow in a standard-size cotton pillowcase to see if it fits.

  • Performance:Each tester sleeps on the pillow for at least three nights and reports back on how comfortable the pillow was, if it offered good support and whether or not it had any cooling properties. We also measure the pillow's height before and after sleeping on it to assess whether it retains its shape.

  • Care:We prioritize pillows that are machine-washable or come with covers that can go in the washer and dryer. Based on the pillow's care label, we determine how easy maintenance will be.

Note: Most of the shredded memory foam pillows we tested are adjustable, allowing you to add or remove fill to achieve different heights and firmnesses. We tested these pillows as they arrived, and in instances where they came with extra filling, at peak cushiness.

Other memory foam pillows we tested

Avocado Green Side-Sleeper Pillow :This pillow isn't quite as adaptive (or "memory foam-ish") as the Honeydew pillow, and the pillowcase is spot-clean only, which is why I didn't choose it as a top pick. But I did find it comfy (in its arrival state, and even more so once I added about half of the additional cushioning it comes with). The generous size offers plenty of wiggle room, and I like that the materials are not only Oeko-Tex- , Made Safe -, and Greenguard Gold-certified , but also GOTS-certified, making it a good option for someone with a larger frame and/or who prefers an organic option.

Sleep Number ComfortFit Pillow :Made with a breathable lyocell cover that seemed very durable and a shredded foam/down alternative fill, this pillow felt cool to the touch. But at 6 inches thick and without much give, it felt a bit too high for sleeping on my side or back. I tested the Classic shape in the standard size, which, at 19 by 25 inches, was on the smaller side. Also, this pillow isn't adjustable like the other shredded foam pillows I evaluated.

Bedgear Storm Performance Pillow :Like our top Luxome pick, this pillow is really customizable. The shell unzips to reveal a shredded memory foam pillow on one side and a solid memory foam pillow on the other. And it's even more breathable, with a seemingly durable cover that's slightly cooler to the touch and several air pockets throughout for added ventilation. I ultimately went with the Luxome option because I found the height slightly more comfortable, especially for back-sleeping (and it's $50 cheaper). But I'd consider this a good choice for someone who wants the option to switch between shredded memory foam and thick, solid memory foam.

Saybrook Sleep Adjustable Pillow :This pillow is firm, cushy and responsive. It measured 7.5 in thickness upon arrival and retained its oomph throughout my testing. It was a little high for my liking, and given the firmness, I couldn't really settle in when side-sleeping, and especially back-sleeping. But you can remove some of the filling via the hidden zipper, and it comes with a cooling gel cover that makes it the coldest in this segment. I'd consider it a good pick for those with broader shoulders, or who run hot and don't mind tinkering with the filling.

Coop Eden Adjustable Pillow :Coop's Eden is made with a gel-infused shredded memory foam and microfiber blend, encased in a polyester and bamboo-derived viscose cover. Our tester, Gifting Editor Amanda Garrity , found the pillow a bit too flat and unsupportive for side-sleeping, but perfect with half a bag of the included fill added. However, she did note in her review that it took a beat for the pillow to take its full shape — and that the cooling sensation she initially felt didn't last through the night.

Tempur-Cloud Adjustable Pillow :This pillow is adjustable, affordable and, despite its bumpy exterior, cushy (Schweitzer confirmed that, as its name would suggest, it did, in fact, feel like sleeping on a cloud). As with the adjustable pillows above, it wasn't quite as supportive as the other Tempur-Pedic memory foam pillows she tested, especially for side sleepers.

Tempur-Cloud Hybrid Pillow :This pillow features a solid memory foam layer on one side and a shredded memory foam layer on the other. You can sleep on the former for firmer support, or the latter for cushier support. At 7 inches thick, this pillow might be a little too tall for shorter, smaller individuals (Schweitzer, who is very petite, found this to be the case). It's worth noting that you can remove pieces from the shredded side to adjust the pillow volume, but it'll sacrifice some of the fullness.

Cushion Lab CloudLoft Pillow :The CloudLoft is constructed of microfiber and foam, and it's machine-washable for easy cleaning. Our tester, Home Optimization Editor Elizabeth Berry , found it too flat for her liking — even with fluffing — and somewhat lumpy rather than smooth and cushy.

Memory foam pillow FAQs

What is memory foam?

First off, you should know there are two types: solid memory foam and shredded memory foam . Solid memory foam is a very dense, responsive foam (also known as polyurethane foam or Tempur-Pedic foam). It's designed to contour and cradle the curves of your head and neck. "Memory foam responds to pressure and softens with body heat, molding to your shape and then slowly returning to its original form," explains Okubadejo.

Shredded memory foam pillows, on the other hand, feature many smaller pieces of memory foam rather than a single large piece. Adds Okubadejo, "The advantage to this is that it's much easier to shift and manipulate. It allows your body to sink in where you apply pressure without experiencing the sluggish feel of traditional memory foam."

Who should use a memory foam pillow?

"Memory foam usually works well for side sleepers and many back sleepers who want cushioning but still need support," advises Okubadejo. "Firmer memory foam or high-density foam pillows typically perform better than very soft pillow fills because they are less likely to flatten overnight."

Memory foam is also worth considering if you have allergies, says Marko. But in the end, it all comes down to what you find most comfortable. "If you're waking up in pain, consider seeing a physical therapist who can figure out the source of your discomfort and offer tips to help you sleep more comfortably," she advises.

How do you clean memory foam pillows?

Avoid machine-washing or -drying memory foam, which can cause it to break down and lose its shape (and become less supportive) over time. Instead, try spot-cleaning foam mattresses and pillows with a light water and baking soda solution, advise experts , and allow them to properly air-dry to help prevent mold or bacterial growth from excessive moisture.

How to clean different foam products can depend on their materials and construction, so it's important to read your item's dedicated care instructions. Otherwise, try to prioritize machine-washable pillow covers and cases.

Are memory foam pillows cooling?

The catch with solid memory foam being so dense, Okubadejo explains, is that it tends to trap heat. For a cooler option, consider a solid foam pillow with perforations for added ventilation, or a shredded foam pillow that, through gaps in foam pieces, allows heat to escape. Many brands also offer gel-infused or -lined pillows, as well as mixed layers and materials, for greater breathability and versatility.
