A good night's sleep starts with a good foundation, and that doesn't just mean a supportive mattress
. The best pillows can make a huge difference in how, erm, restful your rest is, so your trusty team of Yahoo home editors spent four months researching and testing over 40 options. We looked for pillows that meet the needs of back, stomach and side sleepers, rating the cushions on a whole host of qualities, including comfort, support, design and cooling.
After 120 nights of sleeping on down, down alternative, latex and memory foam, we know one thing for sure: There's no such thing as the "perfect" pillow. What works for one person may not work for another, even if they're the same size and sleep in the same position. That said, we easily identified several pillows that were favorites during testing, all of which you'll find below. Once you've got your pillows in place, check out our guides to the best bed sheets
and comforters
to complete your restful retreat.

Best pillows of 2026
Cover material:Polyester, viscose | Fill:Memory foam and microfiber; polyester liner | Dimensions:17" x 27" (queen); 17" x 33" (king) | Care instructions:Machine wash cold on delicate cycle, tumble dry low (both outer cover and inner pillow) | Adjustable:Yes
What we liked:The perfect pillow is the one that's designed for your sleep style. This one's fully customizable, so it works for pretty much anyone and everyone. It impressed us enough that we included it in our guides to the best pillows for side sleepers and stomach sleepers .
In her review of the Coop Eden , tester Amanda Garrity raved about its adjustability, calling it "top tier." She admits it takes some time to figure out your preferred loft and fluff, but it's not exactly a total guessing game. Coop offers detailed guidance for each sleep style: Remove about one-quarter of the fill if you're a back sleeper, add or subtract as needed for comfort if you sleep on your side, or take out one-third of the fill if you typically sleep on your stomach. Once Garrity added half a bag of fill to the pillow, she felt supported and woke up without aches and pains.
You can also choose from three shapes and two sizes. Garrity tested the classic, but in hindsight, she says she should've gone with the crescent or cut-out options because their curved designs cradle the neck and shoulders. The crescent shape has a wider curve that works for both back and side sleepers, while the cut-out has a notch that fits the shoulders of side sleepers.
The shredded gel memory foam and microfiber fill looks fluffy and cloud-like. While this isn't the most cooling pillow we tried, it feels cool to the touch, likely thanks to the viscose-blend cover. Coop actually suggests not using a pillowcase to enjoy the full benefits of the pillow's cooling properties, which is doable thanks to a removable cover that can be machine-washed and -dried. In fact, this is one of the few memory foam pillows that can go entirely in the washer and dryer. If that's not enough to convince you, know that Garrity's still sleeping on this pillow weeks after the testing period. And several of us have already added the Coop Eden to our carts!
Minor criticisms:Garrity noticed a fairly strong smell once she unboxed the pillow that took about a day to dissipate. The cover's webbed design shows through lighter pillowcases.
- Adjustable loft
- Works for side, stomach and back sleepers
- Removable outer cover
- 100-night sleep trial and 5-year warranty
- Machine-washable and -dryable
- Slightly large for standard pillowcases if you add maximum fill
- Strong off-gassing period
Cover material:Cotton | Fill:Polyester | Dimensions:20" x 28" (standard); 20″ x 36″ (king) | Care instructions:Machine wash cold, tumble dry low or air dry | Adjustable:No
What we liked:These popular pillows are designed to mimic plush hotel pillows, with a dense yet breathable down-alternative fill and 250-thread-count cotton covers. Senior Home Writer Kristin Granero , who first tried these pillows a few years ago and has been using them since, found that they require some minor fluffing after sleeping. But unlike other down-alternative options she tried, the fill stayed put, and the pillows generally kept their shape.
The brand says these pillows work for all sleeping positions, and if you read the reviews (173,000+ Amazon shoppers rated them five stars, making these a No. 1 bestseller), you'll find raves from side, back and stomach sleepers alike. Granero is a side sleeper and proclaimed these pillows the perfect height. They're on the softer side, but that makes them comfortable for anyone who wants less structure.
While the price can fluctuate dramatically, you can often find the set for about $60. Another plus? They can be fully machine-washed and dried.
Minor criticisms:We wanted to use these pillows right out of the box, but they arrived compressed. The manufacturer recommends waiting 24 hours for them to reach their full loft.
- Soft and cloud-like
- Machine-washable and dryable
- Dense hypoallergenic fill
- Extremely affordable
- Oeko-Tex certified
- Not suitable for anyone who needs firm support
- Pillows arrived compressed and needed 24 hours to fluff up
Cover material:Nylon, spandex | Fill:Down alternative, silicone-coated gel fibers, hyper-elastic polymer top layer | Dimensions:15.5" x 23.5" | Care instructions:Machine wash cover on cold, lay flat to dry; spot-clean GelFlex Grid top layer | Adjustable:No
What we liked:Purple is famous for its GelFlex Grid, a supportive yet squishy material that serves as the top layer of this down alternative pillow. The result is a plush cushion that supports your head without leaving you feeling suffocated by fill. It was the best cooling pillow we tried.
Granero found that the Purple GridCloud offered both cooling features and pressure relief. It was firm enough to keep her head and neck feeling cradled: "It reminded me of sinking into soft sand — in a good way! — similar to my experiences with memory foam pillows," she proclaimed in her review .
But whereas memory foam often sleeps hot, this pillow keeps you cool from the inside out. The open grid allows for plenty of airflow, as does the down-alternative fill, which is coated in silicone to prevent clumping and encased in a cotton cover. An additional moisture-wicking cover adds to the breathability (though keep in mind it may not have any effect if you also use a pillowcase).
Granero felt the GridCloud was much more responsive than many down or down-alternative pillows, which can require fluffing and prodding to regain their plush, even shape. For Granero, it offered the perfect mix of cool comfort, firmness and stability, especially for sleeping on her back.
Minor criticisms:This pillow may not be ideal for those who move around a lot, as it takes slightly longer to adapt. This pillow is also on the small side (with no options for alternate sizes) and may therefore not be ideal for those with larger body types or larger beds.
- Plush and fluffy, with gentle contouring
- More responsive than down or down-alternative pillows
- Lightweight
- Machine-washable, moisture-wicking cover
- Only one size and height
- Fairly small
Cover material:Viscose | Fill:Shredded memory foam (also comes with 1" and 2" solid memory foam cushions) | Dimensions:17" x 24" (standard); 17" x 34" (king) | Care instructions:Machine-wash exterior and interior covers, tumble dry on low | Adjustable:Yes
What we liked:This Luxome pillow is a BYO (build-your-own) pillow in the best possible way. The cover opens to reveal two thinner pillows stacked on top of one another; one is filled with fluffy cotton, and the other with gel-infused shredded memory foam. It also comes with 1- and 2-inch-thick solid memory foam inserts that can be swapped in to lower the height and add more firmness. If you love a memory foam pillow but need adjustability, the Layr is a winner.
Granero thought the viscose cover felt ultra-soft and slightly cool to the touch. The cotton insert felt plush and what she'd consider medium-firm. The gel-infused shredded memory foam insert felt slightly cushier and cooler. It was also more adaptive, cradling her head and neck like you'd expect from shredded memory foam.
Luxome's Layr measures 6.5 inches tall with both cushions in place, which didn't feel too high given the shredded memory foam's adaptability. This was Granero's favorite fill to sleep on because it allowed for her head and neck to sink in a bit. She's 5-foot-4 and found the fit perfect for side sleeping (and sufficient for back sleeping, should you, like her, find yourself turning in the night).
It didn't show any signs of losing its loft or support during our sleep test, and both the inner and outer covers can be tossed in the washing machine and dryer. Bonus: It comes with a reusable bag for storing any stuffing you decide to remove.
Minor criticisms:At $150 for a single pillow (or $225 for a set), the Layr is on the pricier end. But given that we also consider it the best luxury memory foam pillow, it's more affordable than many options in that category. If you opt for the discounted two-pack, be aware that you get only one of each solid memory foam insert, so you and your partner will have to share them.
- Slightly contouring, while remaining cushy and flexible
- Completely customizable
- Machine-washable pillow covers
- Oeko-Tex and CertiPUR-US-certified
- Not as cooling as some pillows we tested
- The two-pack comes with only one set of solid foam inserts
Cover material:Cotton | Fill:Responsible Down Standard (RDS)-certified 5/95 down and feather blend, white down | Dimensions:20" x 28" (standard); 20" x 36" (king) | Care instructions:Machine wash cold using mild detergent, tumble dry low or dry clean | Adjustable:No
What we liked:Although I'm a side sleeper, I prefer the fluffiness of down pillows, which I have been using for close to a decade. This Helix pick was neck-and-neck with my go-to from Beautyrest , thanks to its firm yet marshmallowy feel that offers the best of both worlds when it comes to a feather fill.
Down is popular because it's luxurious and lofty. It molds around your head and neck, and gives you that feeling of sinking into the pillow. But that very quality also makes it too soft for many. This pillow threads the needle: I found the three-chamber design supportive despite its fluffiness. Although it had give, I didn't feel like my head was slumping all the way down to the mattress as I have with other down pillows. The 100% cotton cover felt cool and crisp to the touch.
I was also impressed by the price. A down pillow can easily run more than $100, making this a pretty good bargain, especially considering the fill is Responsible Down Standard (RDS)-certified, which means it meets specific guidelines for animal welfare.
Minor criticisms:The pillow arrived in a generic bag with no labels or tags, which made it feel a bit cheap. Also, Helix doesn't provide any care instructions on the pillow tag or its website. I reached out to the brand to get the guidelines listed above, and a rep confirmed they'll be added to the site, but I have yet to see them published.
- Supportive yet fluffy
- Cool-to-the-touch cotton cover with reinforced stitching around the edges
- Affordable
- RDS certified
- Machine-washable and dryable
- Looks generic
- No care instructions provided
Cover material:Polyester | Fill:Shredded and solid memory foam | Dimensions:15.5" x 24" | Care instructions:Machine wash cover on cold, tumble dry cool or air dry | Adjustable:Yes
What we liked:As its name suggests, the Tempur-Cloud Hybrid features a combination of materials. It has a layer of supportive solid memory foam (the material that makes Tempur-Pedic mattresses so popular), followed by a layer of shredded memory foam that can be removed as needed to adjust the volume and loft. This ability to customize means the pillow can take on different forms and therefore could work for sleepers of various sizes. The result is firm and supportive, which many side sleepers will love.
The best pillows for side sleepers often feature gussets, and the Hybrid fits the bill. Gussets create a box-like shape that gives a pillow structure, gently supporting the head and neck if they fit your frame. This pick kept its shape during Senior Home Writer Lisa Schweitzer 's sleep test, and she really appreciated that you can choose whether to sleep on the shredded foam side or the solid memory foam side, depending on the type of support you're in the mood for.
The cover, which is made of polyester, "seems more high-end than those of some other pillows we tested, with a plush feel and sturdy zipper closure," she says. That durability is key when you're frequently adjusting the inserts or washing the cover, which the brand recommends doing at least once a month.
Minor criticisms:At roughly 7 inches high, this pillow may be too tall for petite side sleepers. Schweitzer is just about five feet tall, and it lifted her head a bit too much for comfort. This pillow is larger than a queen-size pillow but smaller than a king-size one, and does not fit in all standard pillowcases.
- Adjustable fill level
- Also suitable for back sleepers
- Contains two types of memory foam
- Durable, machine-washable cover
- One size only
- Does not fit well in a standard pillowcase
Cover material:Lyocell | Fill:100% Global Recycled Standard (GRS)-certified recycled PET | Dimensions:20″ x 28″ (standard); 20″ x 36″ (king) | Care instructions:Machine wash cold, tumble dry low | Adjustable:No
What we liked:Home Optimization Editor Elizabeth Berry is a longtime fan of Buffy's Cloud Comforter and Breeze Duvet Cover, so she was excited to explore the brand's pillows. And boy, was she pleasantly surprised.
A combination stomach sleeper, Berry opted for the medium-firm level, but the pillow also comes in soft and firm, and in standard and king sizes. Right away, she noticed how silky soft this pillow felt. She normally prefers crisp percale cotton to a semi-synthetic fabric like lyocell, but this pillow's cover material is the exception. It was cool to the touch and kept her at a comfortable temperature throughout the night. As a hot sleeper, she had no complaints and considers this a solid cooling pillow, even if it doesn't feel as cool to the touch as others we've tried.
The best part about the Cloud, says Berry, is its true medium support, which makes it one of the best pillows for stomach sleepers we tried. Her head and neck felt cushioned as her weight compressed the pillow, and she didn't experience any neck pain during testing. She was shocked that its lower loft suited her back- and stomach-sleeping preferences.
The price doesn't hurt either: At $40, this pillow is on par with our best bargain pillow, but it comes in more firmnesses. Plus, it offers more noticeable cooling.
Minor criticisms:The Buffy Cloud comes in a compressed bag and requires some time to rise to a fluffier height. Berry used her hands to fluff it up, and that helped. Also, several times when we checked the Buffy website, this pillow was out of stock, but eventually it was replenished.
- Affordable
- 50-night trial and 3-year warranty
- Available in three firmness levels and two sizes
- Machine-washable and dryable
- Takes some time to reach its full fluffiness
- Inventory can be limited
Cover material:Viscose, polyester | Fill:Shredded memory foam, polyester | Dimensions:20" x 30" (queen); 20" x 36" (king) | Care instructions:Machine-wash cover in cold water on gentle cycle, tumble dry on low; every six months, insert pillow into the dryer and run on low for 10-15 minutes | Adjustable:Yes
What we liked:Granero, who's a sometimes side sleeper but mostly a back sleeper, found herself gravitating toward Lagoon's pillow time and again. The fill is a shredded memory foam-polyester blend and was among the spongiest and most supportive she tried, soft enough to gently cradle her head and neck, yet firm enough that she felt supported.
At 5.5 inches thick, this pillow has a lower profile that she found ideal for sleeping on her back. But this pillow could work for those who like a higher loft too, because it comes with additional fill. You can choose between queen and king sizes; Granero tested the queen, which, at 20-by-30 inches, was large enough for her head and neck, with room for movement. Each time she lifted her head, the material quickly expanded back into place — and after several nights of sleeping on this pillow, she didn't notice any difference in its cushiness or shape.
Additional pros: The Lagoon comes with a cylinder-shaped storage bag for easy traveling. You can toss the cover in the washing machine and dryer.
Minor criticisms:Although Granero didn't feel hot while sleeping on it, the pillow doesn't provide any cooling. And given its larger size, you'll need a queen-sized pillowcase. She tried to get away with a standard size, and the pillow stuck out about an inch.
- Contouring and stable, while remaining cushy
- Adjustable, with extra shredded memory foam pack
- Machine-washable cover (and entire pillow can go in the dryer)
- CertiPUR-US certified
- Breathable, but not noticeably cooling
- Doesn't fit in a standard-size pillowcase
Factors to consider when choosing a pillow
Knowing how to choose a pillow can be tricky when there are so many options. Use the guidelines below, but don't forget: It comes down to personal comfort, so above all, pick the option that feels good. Your sleeping style, body size and even your mattress can determine the best bed pillow for your needs. Many companies offer a trial period, so you can test out your pick for several nights before committing.
-
Cover material:Cotton is breathable and cool, but may not feel as cool to the touch as a semi-synthetic fabric like lyocell or viscose. Keep in mind that quilting or very obvious stitching may show through lighter colored pillowcases.
-
Fill:
-
Memory foamtends to provide more support and stability, especially when it's a solid block of material. Shredded memory foam offers greater flexibility and breathability, as the shreds create pockets for airflow. "Heavy people may find that shredded foam doesn't support them as well as a solid memory foam surface would," explains Dr. Gbolahan Okubadejo, an orthopedic and spinal surgeon and founder of The Institute for Comprehensive Spine Care . Alternatively, he says he'd recommend shredded memory foam to "most people who sleep hot, toss and turn, or want some cushion without the sinking feeling."
-
Latexresponds quickly to changing positions throughout the night and is supportive like memory foam, though it tends to cost and weigh more. Like memory foam, latex comes as a solid piece or shredded.
-
Down alternativeis made of synthetic fibers that mimic the fluffy feeling of down. It's a popular pick because it's usually inexpensive and won't exacerbate allergies like some feathers can. Often, these pillows are machine-washable.
-
Downis made of real feathers and will likely need to be fluffed often to regain its shape. It's a luxurious, durable fill but may not provide enough support for certain sleeping positions.
-
-
Dimensions:Many pillows come in standard and king sizes, but the exact dimensions can vary based on the brand (in testing, we found some "standard"-size pillows very small and others too big for a standard pillowcase). To make things more complicated, some pillow brands offer a queen size, which may require you to get queen pillowcases.
-
Firmness:"Soft pillows compress with the weight of the body part, whereas medium-firm pillows provide some support but also 'give' a little. Firm pillows maintain shape and offer the most support," says Dr. Theresa Marko, American Physical Therapy Association spokesperson and founder of Marko Physical Therapy PLLC .
-
Loft:Marko explains that thin pillows provide cushioning without altering spinal alignment, while thick pillows fill the spaces created by the natural curvature of the spine and hips. A low loft is generally best for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers typically need a thicker pillow to help fill the gap between their shoulder to their head/neck.
-
Care instructions:Many of the pillows we tested feature machine-washable covers for easy cleaning. Remember to always remove pillow fill before laundering, unless otherwise instructed. Some pillows can go entirely in the washer and dryer, though they may need some fluffing afterward. Many brands recommend drying pillows with dryer balls to help them maintain their shape.
-
Adjustability:If you're a combination sleeper — or find your preferences change over time — a pillow with extra pillow pads and/or fill is a great choice, as it lets you customize the height and/or cushiness as needed. As a general rule, as long as the pillow cover has a zipper, you can "flatten" any shredded foam or latex pillow by simply removing some of the fill.
-
Certifications: Oeko-Tex , Made Safe , Greenguard Gold and CertiPUR-US-certified products must meet certain safety standards, and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic products must meet a list of established criteria for ecological and social responsibility. There are also certifications for latex (the Global Organic Latex Standard ) and down, including the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) and Downmark .
How we test pillows
My fellow Yahoo home editors and I put each pillow through a series of tests to see if it deserves a spot on your bed. Here is a quick rundown:
-
Design:After we unbox each pillow, we note how fast the pillow takes its proper shape and if there are any imperfections. We put the pillow in a standard-size cotton pillowcase to see if it fits.
-
Performance:Each tester sleeps on the pillow for at least three nights and reports back on how comfortable the pillow was, if it offered good support and whether or not it had any cooling properties. We also measure the pillow's height before and after sleeping on it to assess whether it retains its shape.
-
Care:We prioritize pillows that are machine-washable or come with covers that can go in the washer and dryer. Based on the pillow's care label, we determine how easy maintenance will be.
Pillow FAQs
What is the best pillow for neck pain?
Look for pillows specially designed to offer cervical support that are comfortable for your size and weight. You'll want to avoid pillows that are too plush or thick, as this can bring the neck and spine out of alignment — no doubt leaving you feeling achy in the morning.
How often should you change your pillows?
Tanu Grewal, chief cleaning officer at Pinalen , says that "pillows typically have a lifespan of about two years." She adds, however, that this can fluctuate depending on the materials and use they're getting; if they're feeling lumpy or have permanent stains, these are signs it's time to replace them.
