How Often To Clean Pewter

According to Amanda, this will depend on the pewter piece and how often it is on display.  "It's best to clean your pewter items about once a year, or as needed, depending on the shine you are hoping to achieve," she suggests. 

Considerations Before Getting Started

It's important to clean your pewter items every so often because they can get dirty or tarnished. "As with any home decorations, dust and other residue can collect on its surface," explains Amanda. "Our pewter is made to be shiny, but will oxidize or gray naturally with age."

When cleaning your pewter, you want to make sure that you avoid heat. Matt suggests avoiding adding pewter items to the dishwasher because the heat could darken or discolor the pewter. "Also, avoid metal brushes that can easily scratch this soft metal," he explains. It is always wise to test a small area of the pewter item first to ensure the cleaning method does not cause damage.

• Soft cloth

• Warm water

• Mild dish soap

• Small, medium, or large bowl

How To Clean Pewter With Vinegar

1. Rinse the pewter item(s) in warm water with a mild soap to remove residue and dust.

2. Depending on how big or small your pewter item is, you'll want to get a small, medium, or large bowl. 

3. Add white vinegar to the bowl. 

4. Submerge your pewter item in the white vinegar for 15 minutes.

5. Remove the pewter and rinse with warm water and mild soap.

6. Dry with a soft cloth.

Ketchup Buffing

1. Rinse the pewter item(s) in warm water with a mild soap to remove residue and dust.

2. Squeeze ketchup on a soft cloth and buff it into the pewter design.

3. Allow ketchup to sit for 15 minutes.

4. Remove and rinse with warm water and mild soap.

5. Dry with a soft cloth.

Baking Soda Paste

1. Rinse the pewter item(s) in warm water with a mild soap to remove residue and dust.

2. Mix baking soda and water together in a small bowl until you get a toothpaste consistency.

3. Buff the pewter design with the baking soda paste.

4. Allow to sit for 15 minutes.

5. Rinse in warm water and mild soap.

6. Dry with a soft cloth.

Tips To Keep Pewter Clean Longer

To clean your pewter items clean longer, you'll want to keep up on regular cleaning to ensure they don't dull. It's also a good idea to avoid dishwashers and never store them anywhere subject to high heat, as this can damage the finish. Dry your pewter item thoroughly if it gets wet. Finally, while pewter doesn't require polishing, if you want to enhance shine, you can polish occasionally with a soft cloth.
