In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen and Cooking Lab , I've been testing Kitchen items since 2020, including various tabletop and entertaining items such as dinnerware , charcuterie boards and coupe glasses. As someone who loves hosting and creating beautiful tablescapes, I'm very particular about my flatware whether it's for everyday use or fun brunches. Which is why I obsessively researched just about every set online, and with the help of our other Kitchen Lab experts, narrowed it down to 15 of the most promising flatware sets to test for performance and ease of use. While some flatware sets can cost upwards of a few hundred dollars, you can grab a 20-piece Cangshan set for under $100. The utensils are made with 18/10 stainless steel and are dishwasher safe.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:This set was overwhelmingly popular with our testers, with many commenting that it was their favorite out of 15 flatware setsand that they loved the "simple and sleek look." Testers found the spoon easy to use for soup and said the knife cut well. While consumers slightly struggled to pick up rigatoni with the fork, they still enjoyed using it and gave the set overall high marks. In our tests, the stainless steel set came out of the dishwasher just as good as new.

AT-HOME CONSUMER TESTS:After testing these in the Lab, I knew I wanted to take them home to continue to use and they're hands down my favorite set of flatware I've ever used. They are the perfect balance of feeling hefty and balanced in your hand without feeling bulky or uncomfortable. I appreciate they have a slimmer design but not so slim they slip out of my hand. The price is reasonable compared to other utensils of similar quality, and after over a year of nearly daily dishwasher runs they still remain good as new. Plus, they've withstood banging around in my kitchen drawer without denting or major scratching.

TAKE NOTE:The set also comes in an antique copper finish , which I fell in love with immediately. However, I've found after multiple runs in the dishwasher the copper finish has worn off which is not uncommon for flatware with gold or copper finishes. In order to keep the finish lasting longer, I recommend hand washing with a mild soap.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:The spoon and fork handles are thin and light giving them a more delicate feel. Testers found the knife had a substantial handle that felt sturdy and cutting through carrots and green beans was a breeze. T he handles are slightly curved, which adds to the balanced design and feels ergonomic in the hand, ensuring it's easy to hold. This set is made with 18/10 stainless steel and has substantial weight so it feels durable.

The flatware comes in a mirror or satin finish and makes a great basic set. You can also grab a matching five-piece serving set, steak knives and cheese knives to round out your set. Plus, if you need to replace just a few pieces, you can buy them individually so you don't need to purchase a whole set.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:I liked that these felt sturdy and substantial in my hand, without being so heavy they feel uncomfortable. Testers found these utensils comfortable to use and enjoyed using the cutlery. These also held up well to multiple washes.

AT-HOME CONSUMER TESTS:Our at-home tester has been using this set for the last few months and says, "I like that the set is simple and clean looking. It's great for everyday use, and easy to clean. The pieces feel properly weighted, not too heavy, which feels more formal, or too light."

TAKE NOTE:Some testers commented that the spoon feels slightly heavy but still gave it a high score.

Fable's flatware has a trendy-enough look to dress up any brunch or dinner party but it's classic enough that you won't regret buying it in a few years.Made from high-quality 18/10 stainless steel, it's built to last and all sets are dishwasher safe according to the brand, including the matte gold, which is rare since many gold finish flatware sets are hand wash only because the finish tends to tarnish or wear off.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:It was one of the highest-rated flatware sets in our tests, earning top marks for comfort and design. The dinner spoon is a touch on the large side but overall testers enjoyed the set and gave it a good score.

AT-HOME CONSUMER TESTS:An at-home staff tester has owned the silver set for almost a year and still loves them. They are the everyday set for her large family and has held up well. She also says, "We have other flatware, but I just love the feel of this set. They have great weight without being too heavy and feel stable; overall, they are very comfortable to hold. They clean well in the dishwasher and still look great after multiple washes per week; no bent fork prongs or damage to the finish. Even after daily use, they still look good enough to use when entertaining and hosting!"

I owned the matte gold Fable set for months without major issues, except one large spoon developed two small rust spots but the others look perfectly new. Fable advises against overloading the dishwasher basket to prevent damage and I recommend keeping utensils from banging together to reduce the risk of damage. If you want to be extra cautious, hand washing is the safer option.

TAKE NOTE:A few testers commented how much they like the matte finish though it may not be for everyone. For those who prefer a shiny finish the set is also available in polished silver.

Other fun flatware sets we tested but may not be for everyday use

Crate & Barrel Aero 20-Piece Flatware Set

It's hard to miss the Crate and Barrel Aero flatware with its eye-catching minimalist look, featuring very thin, tapered handles and round spoons.The mirror polish finish adds to the modern design and is sure to catch your guests' attention. The Aero flatware is available in a mirror polish finish or silver finish with matte black handles. All sets are made of 18/10 stainless steel.

HOWT IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:Multiple testers commented on this flatware before even trying it because it stood out among the other sets. After using the flatware, one tester wrote, "I love how sleek they are! Very modern." Another commented that the flatware "looks like it would be in an expensive restaurant." Panelists were divided on whether they liked the completely circular spoon, with some appreciating it and others not so much.

AT-HOME CONSUMER TESTS:This set would be fun for a dinner party or brunch, but maybe not the most practical for everyday use. I found this shape easy to use for soups and stews, but not as easy when it comes to other tasks, like trying to dig ice cream out of the container.

TAKE NOTE:One downside to the slim flatware, it's harder to hold because there's not as much to grab onto.

Fortessa Arezzo Brushed Flatware Set

The Fortessa Arezzo offers a modern look without being overly trendy. The slim handles are rectangular with soft edges, ensuring they won't dig into your handwhile holding them. If you like a deep, yellow gold then you'll love the the brushed gold finish.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:Testers commented the forks were excellent at picking up pasta and found the flatware was comfortable to hold and well balanced. It was some of the heaviest flatware in our tests making it feel built to last.

TAKE NOTE:A few testers didn't care for the color, although they liked the flatware set in general. If dark gold isn't your preference, the cutlery is also available in brushed silver, brushed black and mirror finishes. Just note, all finishes are dishwasher safe except the gold finish which is hand wash only.

Fortessa Lucca Faceted 20-Piece Flatware Set

In a sea of silver, gold and black flatware this Fortessa cutlery set stands out with its gorgeous copper rose finish and textured handles that resemble a honeycomb. I loved the charm of the copper rose finish but this set is also available in silver mirror with options for a 20- or 42-piece set if that better suits your preference.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:The handles appear to almost sparkle, with the facets catching the light, so it's no surprise this was one of the highest-rated flatware sets in our tests.The textured handle may feel odd at first but testers commented, "It feels nice."

Testers also liked the shape and design of the spoon giving it high marks. The soup spoon is on the larger side but it's narrow, making it easy to fit into your mouth.

AT-HOME CONSUMER TESTS:I noticed the texture helps provide a better grip on the flatware so it doesn't slip through your fingers. This was one of my favorite spoons to use at home for digging ice cream out of a pint because the texture and shorter handle provide excellent grip and leverage.

TAKE NOTE:The soup spoon is on the larger side but it's narrow, making it easy to fit into your mouth.

Williams Sonoma Absolu 20-Piece Flatware Set

Simple yet sophisticated, the Williams Sonoma Absolu flatware set delivers on both design and performance.The polished mirror finish enhances its luxurious look, while the decorative lines add an extra special touch to flatter just about any table setting. It's made with high-quality 18/10 stainless steel, and according to the brand, won't tarnish.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:In our Lab testing, we saw no issues with tarnishing or stains after washing and cleanup is easy since they're dishwasher safe. It earned one of the highest scores among testers, receiving top marks in almost every category.

Testers noted that the spoon and knife were on the hefty side but still liked them, with one tester commenting, "The knife is a little heavy but cuts like a dream!" The higher weight makes this silverware set feel durable, and the handles are comfortable to hold.

TAKE NOTE:With the high price tag, I would have a hard time using these everyday without wanting to treat them extra delicately since I'm the type of person to throw my silverware around. That said, these held up well in the dishwashing tests.

Other flatware sets we tested

CB2 Parallel 20-Piece Brushed Flatware Set

Aesthetically, it's hard to go wrong with this set. Multiple testers praised the design. What held this flatware set back are the rectangular handles which are uncomfortable and hand drying is recommended. Still, if design is your priority, these flatware pieces will look stunning on any tabletop.

Tramontina Classic 18/10 Stainless Steel Flatware Set

The Tramontina set is another great deal at $63 but it was slightly edged out by our best value pick and testers gave it an average score because they found the knife slightly uncomfortable and felt the flatware was a bit bulky. However, if you're looking for an affordable option and don't mind larger silverware, this is a solid choice.

CB2 Rush 20-Piece Flatware Set

The CB2 Rush set scored fairly well in our tests. While most finish options are dishwasher safe (except the brushed gold), CB2 recommends hand-drying, which can be easy to forget. If you're up for hand-drying, this may be a good choice for a simple, modern set with a lower price tag than some others.

Fortessa Dragonfly 20-Piece Flatware Set

The Dragonfly's design is unique and somewhat polarizing—you'll either love it or hate it, which is the feedback we received from testers. The elongated handles are extremely thin making it harder to hold, and testers noted that the deep spoon would make it difficult to eat yogurt or soup. One word of caution, the knife point is sharp and if you're not careful it's easy to accidentally knick yourself.

CB2 Abe 20-Piece Brushed Black Flatware Set

Testers gave this set a high score for comfort and shape, but were split on aesthetics. Some really raved about the edgy look, while others didn't quite care for it. I found the set comfortable to hold, but noticed that these looked different in person compared to online. These have more contrast between the polished silver and matte black handles, and the brushed black handles have an intentionally tarnished matte look, rather than the smoother, shinier look seen online.

Oneida Flight 20-Piece Flatware Set

This set is a great price, but one of the biggest complaints from testers was the weight and thicknesses of the knife compared to the fork and spoon made everything feel disproportional. The fork and spoon are very thin and light while the knife is thick and heavy.

How we test the best flatware

To test the best flatware, we first spent about 10 hours in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen and Cooking Lab researching all different types of flatware and best-selling sets. (Plus, we do our homework throughout the year by attending trade shows and visiting showrooms to learn about the latest and greatest.) Then we narrowed down our picks to 15 sets we could test for ease of use and performanceby considering a variety of materials, styles, price points and cleanability.

✔️ Ease of use:We note if the flatware sets are dishwasher safe or hand wash only as well any special care instructions. When we test performance we wash one place setting from each flatware set in the dishwasher at least twice. We note the material, finish and what's included in the flatware set and also consider the price.

✔️ Performance:To test how it feels to hold the flatware, we weigh one dinner spoon and one dinner fork from each set and record the weight.

We also hold each one in our hand to evaluate if it feels balanced or if it feels like one end of the spoon or fork feels heavier than the other. We assess the size and shape of the handles, spoon and fork tines.

We have a consumer panel come to the Lab and test flatware by cutting carrots and string beans, stabbing pasta and eating soup. We gather feedback on comfort, balance, design, shape, size and overall enjoyment.

What to look for when shopping for the best flatware

✔️ Material:Flatware is typically made of stainless steel, with 18/10 and 18/0 being the most common for home sets. The numbers refer to the percentage of chromium and nickel respectively. Cutlery that's 18/10 is more durable, corrosion-resistant and maintains its shine longer, while 18/0 is less durable and more prone to tarnishing and heat, but is usually more affordable. Some flatware also features materials like copper, acrylic or wood, though these are less common.

✔️ Finish:

Mirror finishesare just as they sound, highly reflective similar to a mirror. This type of finish looks elegant thanks to the high shine. It also has a very clean appearance due to its smooth, gleaming surface. The downside to mirror finishes is they show fingerprints and scratches more easily requiring more care to avoid these issues.

Brushed and satinfinishes have a soft, matte sheen and less reflectivity than mirror finishes. They feel smooth and help hide fingerprints and scratches. Satin finishes have a soft luster and brushed finishes also have a subdued appearance but show fine lines from the brushing process. The slight texture helps provide a better grip on the cutlery since it's not as slippery.

Gold, black, copper and other colored finishesprovide both color and a decorative look, which can transform your tabletop from traditional to whimsical or moody and more. The main downside is that the finish may wear off over time, especially with rough use. To prevent scratching, it's generally recommended to avoid wire brushes or abrasive sponges. Some sets, particularly gold flatware, hand washing and drying are recommended, to help prevent tarnishing, scratches and to maintain their color over time.

✔️ Shapes:

Handlescome in various shapes and sizes which affect both aesthetics and comfort. While design is personal and plays a big role in selecting flatware, there are some ergonomic factors to keep in mind.

Thinner handles may look sleek but can be harder to grip, especially for larger hands. Rectangular handles can feel uncomfortable due to sharp edges. If you like the rectangular look but still want comfort, opt for a thicker rectangular handle with rounded edges.

Also consider the length of the handles. Longer handles can look more elegant but may be harder to maneuver, while shorter handles are easier to control but might not be as aesthetically pleasing or may feel too small in your hand.

Spoon bowl and fork tines:Most 20-piece flatware sets include a larger spoon (dinner or soup) and a smaller spoon (teaspoon or dessert). Rounded spoon bowls look interesting but can be harder to use for foods like ice cream or yogurt. For forks, tine length is largely a matter of personal preference. If you tend to "stab" your food, you may want to choose forks with tines that have a sharper point.

✔️ Size:When shopping for flatware online, be sure to check the dimensions, as appearances can be deceiving in photos. We found that some flatware turned out to be larger or smaller than we expected.

✔️ Care:While many flatware sets are dishwasher safe, those with specialty finishes like black or gold may require hand washing. Most silver flatware is dishwasher safe, but always check care instructions. Another unique care tip we noticed on some sets was to avoid citrus-scented or harsh detergents.

What's the difference between flatware and silverware?

Flatware refers to utensils like forks, knives and spoons. Silverware historically referred to utensils made from sterling silver or silver-plated metal, but today, most silverware is made from stainless steel, and the terms are often used interchangeably. While you can still find silverware made from real silver, it's extremely expensive.
