And while the planet's hottest month on record is finally behind us (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently shared that not-so-fun tidbit), a lot of the country is still feeling the heat. A neck fan has become a summer essential, but it's not the only cooling product worth buying. The best portable fans (as in, little handheld gizmos) have been showing up everywhere — on subway platforms in New York City, at outdoor concerts and festivals, and all throughout Europe as temperatures skyrocket.

I rallied a group of testers to brave the great outdoors and crank up some of the best portable fans, comparing airflow, noise levels, battery life and ease of use. The following fans blew the competition away, earning top marks for power and compact size.

Why it's great:Meet the little fan that could ... and does! It arrived fully charged, so I was able to bust it out as soon as I stepped outside (which happened to be on a day with 90% humidity). This pocket-size powerhouse has a 13,500 RPM motor, which the brand claims is "faster than a Boeing 737NG engine." Take that for what you will, but regardless, it delivers turbocharged airflow. There are five speeds to choose from, but I found the third option to be the sweet spot.
The easy-to-read LED display is a standout here. Just glance over at it to see which speed you're on and how much battery power you have left. Speaking of battery life, the brand claims this portable fan can run for up to 12 hours. For what it's worth, I used my fan for 20 minutes at the third speed, and the battery only dropped 4%.
In its normal position, the fan measures just shy of 7 inches tall, making it a smidge bigger than an iPhone 17 Pro Max. I could comfortably fit it in my Lululemon belt bag and everyday crossbody purse, but my partner struggled to fit it in his pocket since the fan is on the bulkier side. Fold it in half (pictured here) to set it on a table or desk for hands-free cooling.
Minor criticisms:At its highest speed, this thing is jet-engine loud. At speed three, it gave me flashbacks to my parents' old desktop computer booting up. The brand claims a whisper-quiet noise level of 40 dB, but I found it to be one of the loudest fans of the bunch.

Why it's great:I've traveled the world with this little fan — two summers ago, my friend gave it to me on her bachelorette trip in Savannah, Ga., and in the time since, it's kept me cool on the steamy streets of Lisbon, at Disneyland and while running errands in New York City in the middle of a heat wave (duty calls!). I haven't had to charge it once since I first unboxed it — and I've definitely clocked in at least 10 hours of use.
It's the definition of small-but-mighty, with three speed controls (it maxes out at 3,400 RPM) and a compact design. When folded, it can fit in the palm of my hand, so I've had no problem squeezing it into my Lululemon belt bag or everyday crossbody between uses. It can also be transformed into a tabletop fan — just fold it back 270° and prop it up on a flat surface for hands-free cooling.
The two-blade fan itself isn't as fancy as the bladeless options on this list. Still, I will give props where props are due: Safety was clearly top of mind here because the flexible plastic blades automatically stop when they come into contact with fingers, hands or anything. The built-in flashlight and power bank are a nice bonus.
Minor criticisms:While it's saved me from breaking a sweat on more than one occasion, I wouldn't say it's the most powerful fan out there. Even on the highest speed setting, I'd compare it to a strong gust of wind. It's fairly basic, so there aren't any cooling or misting features. But the price is right at under $15 — in fact, I'd also award it the title of best budget cooling fan.

Why it's great:It's amazing what a little mist can do. Seriously, I carried this fan with me on a walk on a 90° day, and the ultra-fine mist brought some much-needed relief. It's more of a relaxing, spa-like vibe than a standard mister — just hold down the button for a couple of seconds to activate the mist, then press it down to turn it off.
The fan comes with a small squeeze bottle to easily fill up the water tank. And while the tank is on the smaller side, there was enough water to get me through my entire 20-minute walk. One caveat: The brand says it'll last up to 35 minutes, but the tank was basically empty by the time my walk was done.
It's not the most powerful fan of the bunch (the maximum wind speed is 13.4 feet per second), but the fan-and-mist combo can't be matched. The brand claims that it "delivers a tangible drop in temperature," and I found that it cooled me quicker than the other fans I tested.
Minor criticisms:Standing 9 inches tall, this fan is portable, but not purse-friendly. Even though it folds in half, it was still too big for my Lululemon belt bag and everyday crossbody. It's a better option if you're carrying around a larger tote or backpack — or you can always attach the lanyard and wear it around your neck.

It's been a summer savior for our tester, who says it'll also come in handy when the weather turns, "especially for all of my perimenopausal friends experiencing hot flashes."
Yes, it has plenty of bells and whistles, but let's not forget why we're here in the first place. There are 10 fan settings, reaching a maximum airflow of up to 17 mph. This is slightly lower than our top pick, and about a third as fast as Dyson's HushJet, so this fan doesn't score highly on airflow alone.
What makes it one of the best portable fans is its impressive staying power. Our tester has been using it for a month straight — whether she's "melting in her apartment" or on her travels — and only had to charge it once. This supports the brand's claim that it can last up to 11 hours on a low setting and up to 1.5 hours on max.
Minor criticisms:Our tester says the noise didn't bother her one bit, but several shoppers say otherwise, with one writing that "the fan is loud starting at setting two, so definitely not the best option for a quiet room." Another added that they don't mind the noise "because it creates a nice brown noise effect for sleeping or covering up hotel noise."

"I didn't expect to love this neck fan as much as I do, but now I can't live without it in the summer," says Evergreen Commerce Director Lauren Matthews-Ide , who's been known to rock her fan at backyard barbecues. "It takes a second to get used to — it's like wearing headphones around your neck — but on a sticky, humid day, it's a game-changer."

What to consider when shopping for a portable fan
✓ Size, weight and portability:Look for fans that can be stored in carrying cases between uses or can fold in half for more compact carrying. I focused my search on fans that would fit in my Lululemon belt bag and Rothy's Casual Crossbody bag, since that's what I typically carry when I'm traveling or running errands.
✓ Battery life and charging:No one wants their fan to die on them when they need it most. Check whether you can charge your fan while it's in use and how long it claims to last on its highest setting. All but one of the fans we tested can be recharged with a USB-C charger; only one fan requires AA batteries.
✓ Airflow power:Don't let their size fool ya! Even the smallest handheld fans can pack the power — for example, the Dyson HushJet claims to cool up to 25 meters per second. A few measurements to consider: M/s (meters per second) and ft/s (feet per second) measure the speed at which air moves, while RPM tells you how many full circles a fan blade makes in one minute. In both cases, the higher the number, the better.
✓ Noise level:Would you feel confident whipping out this fan in a stuffy library? Or what about during a wedding ceremony under the beating sun? Some brands claim whisper-quiet noise levels (below 30 dB), but that doesn't mean they are silent. Check noise levels at each speed level to determine what you're comfortable with.
✓ Extra features:Not all portable fans are created equal. Some double as power banks, flashlights and personal misters. The Shark ChillPill, for example, even has a special cooling plate that'll cool the neck, wrists or any other hot spots at record speed.

First, I asked fellow writers and editors who shop, test and cover home gear for a living to share the best portable fans they've been powering up all summer long. They assessed the fan's size, quality, power, battery life and noise — all of which were weighed equally. As the answers came in, I realized there were a few notable gaps in our testing pool, so I ordered several Amazon bestsellers to try. Everyone rated the fans in the following categories:

Portability:Portability is the name of the game here. Each tester rated how easy it is to carry their fan and power it up while on the go. They noted how well it fit in their pocket or everyday bag, plus if it came with a wrist strap or lanyard for hands-free cooling.

Cool factor:All fans were scored on how consistently they cooled testers on their lowest and highest settings. The big question: Would you trust this fan to keep you cool on a genuinely hot day (90°)?

Noise:Silent but powerful is the goal. Testers compared the noise levels at the fan's lowest and highest settings. They considered whether they'd feel comfortable cranking up the fan in a quiet environment, like in a stuffy library or at an outdoor wedding ceremony under the scorching summer sun.

Each tester noted how long they could go before swapping batteries or plugging it in — some used their fans for hours without having to charge them once! JisuLife Handheld Fan 7 : Our tester gave this fan solid marks across the board — it's compact, consistently cool and easy to charge. They noted that they charged it every night if they used the highest setting, but they only needed to charge it every day and a half on the lower settings. "I brought this fan to the Amazon in Peru, where there's obviously no air-conditioning. I propped this up on my nightstand each night and slept comfortably. If it can keep my cool there, I trust it to cool me off virtually anywhere," our tester wrote.
O2Cool Deluxe Handheld Misting Fan : This is basically a battery-powered spray bottle with a fan attached. You have to press the button each time to activate the mist, which isn't as fine or gentle as the HandFan. However, the tank does hold significantly more water — 9 ounces compared to the HandFan's 1 ounce.
Dyson HushJet Mini Cool Fan : Leave it to Dyson to pack tons of power into a fan that weighs about as much as a smartphone. On its highest setting, air travels at up to 55 mph … and you'll certainly hear it. "Even on the lowest setting, the fan is quite loud — ironic, since it's called the HushJet! On the higher settings, it honestly sounds like you're in a wind tunnel," our tester wrote.
Playhot Portable Fan : It would be easy to mistake this fan for the Bearwind — it has a near-identical sleek design, including a seven-blade fan, folding capabilities and an easy-to-read LED screen. Our tester and her sister used it on their Italian vacation during a heat wave, writing that "it actually made a difference rather than just blowing around hot air." The main difference between the Playhot and Bearwind? The screen isn't as specific, so you can't see exactly how much power it has left, down to the percent.
Blueair AlwaysCool Portable Handheld Fan : Blueair has been crushing the air purifier game for years, so portable fans seem like a natural extension for the brand. Gotta keep that clean air flowing, right? This fan earned solid marks across the board — it feels good in the hand, has a tilting head to direct airflow up to 75°, can be easily adjusted to 100 different speed levels and is actually whisper-quiet (23dB on its lowest setting, 46 dB at level 100). The only downside is that it's very large, so I wouldn't recommend it for traveling or everyday carrying.
