How we chose the best graduation dresses

While I'd consider myself an expert in many things (luggage, the best ALO leggings, where to find great strawberry-matcha lattes in NYC), I wanted to consult with a real grad about the graduation dresses they and their peers have been gravitating toward this year. According to three Vanderbilt grads that I spoke with, there are several practical considerations — comfort, color (most choose a white dress), necklines and hemlines that pair well with the cut of a grad gown. It's not just about simply finding a trending style for the ceremony.

Along with some options that Oh is considering for the big day, I selected several other styles that cater to those important categories: dresses that are breathable and comfortable, in a variety of mini and midi lengths, with silhouettes and necklines that sit nicely underneath a gown, as well as some more fashion-forward options for graduation parties or senior portraits. And while graduation is a special event worth splurging on, we wanted to offer a range of prices, from affordable Amazon options to nicer, high-quality dresses that could be worn again for a future occasion.

What to consider when shopping for a graduation dress

• Material

  • Weather:Since many graduation ceremonies take place outside, the weather should be a primary consideration. Will it be hot and muggy or windy and on the chillier side? If it's the former, light summer fabrics like cotton or linen will serve you well — just keep an eye on sheerness, as thinner materials can sometimes reveal bright or patterned undergarments underneath. Smith says, "I'm going to be wearing a black cap and gown for graduation, so a cooler dress will be critical in the Nashville heat." Smith mentioned that she and her college-aged friends have been liking midi dress options "that peek out under regalia so that it doesn't look like the gown is the only thing worn" for their graduation.

Another fun option is to choose a fun shoe that matches your school colors or the color of your gown — Peroutka explains that she'll be wearing a fun gold heel as a nod to Vanderbilt's colors.
