Certain denim trends come and go. Some come and go, then do it all over again, ad nauseam (ahem, looking at you, skinny jeans). But in an age where we're increasingly valuing ease in what we put on our bodies, most of us can agree on one thing: The wide-leg jean is where it's at. "It's 2026: If you're still wearing jeans that feel uncomfortable, then you're doing it wrong!" says Marissa Lawson, director of the Portland, Maine, clothing boutique, Bobbles and Lace
.
Wide-leg jeans
are comfy, roomy, trendy and
flattering. “They extend your legs and cinch your waist to give your figure a more fit appearance,” says David Taveras
, a New York City-based fashion stylist. “And that's the great thing about a wide-leg pant: It flatters all figures.”
But, adds Lawson, that same omni-flattering style "can be a little tough to style at first if you're not used to them. I think it's because we all had the high-waisted skinny jeans for so long. It's just an adjustment to a new shape." To help demystify the trend, your resident style editor (hi!) teamed up with expert stylists to offer tips on how to style wide-leg jeans, including suggestions for full outfit ideas. Psst: The denim styles below start at $30, with accessories as low as $13.
Belt it out
When it comes to sporting wide-leg styles, "remember to always show where your waist is," says Lawson. "Defining the smallest part of the body can be done in a few ways, but the easiest ... is simply adding a belt." She says this genius move creates a flattering, proportional look, especially when "paired with a tighter top or a tucked-in blouse, sweater, shorter jacket or blazer."

Big bottom, meet little top
To keep things proportional (in other words, to prevent you from looking like you're wearing your dad's clothes), a good rule of thumb is to balance looser clothing with more figure-hugging pieces. “It's best to juxtapose the wide bottom with a fitted top, so you're not giving volume everywhere,” says Taveras. We're not talkin' skin-tight — just a little something to hint at your body's true shape.

Get to the point
“I think a pointy toe and a wide-leg pant are the perfect match,” says Taveras. The contrast is more than just aesthetic — it’s strategic. As Lawson explains, "any shoe that becomes more narrow at the toe … will make the illusion of a longer leg.” The result is a balanced proportion that reads taller, sleeker and effortlessly polished.

Supersize your jacket
Ready to graduate to the big leagues? When it's done carefully, Taveras says he “really likes a wide-leg pant with a bigger top” — more specifically, “paired with a boxy or oversized blazer.” A menswear-inspired jacket is ideal for this. Leave it open in the front and layer it over a fitted or tucked tee so you're not swallowed whole by the plentiful fabric when pairing it with a baggy jean .

Trust the crop
If you're a high-waist kinda gal (like me), you can have a little fun moving your hemlines around. Thanks to your proportions, you can try out a shorter crop top without necessarily even showing skin. Taveras says this strategic play can enhance or create an hourglass figure. His favorite? “Cropped belted jackets really look great with the wide-leg bottoms,” says Taveras.

Billowy button-downs
No risky business here: Taveras recommends trying an “oversized men's style button-down [or] a billowy silk" option with wide-leg jeans. The key is to show off your waist in these flowy silhouettes so you don't drown in fabric. He says they look best "if tucked in or left open with a cropped (or bikini!) top underneath.”

Get your kicks
Wide-leg jeans and sneakers instantly give cool-girl vibes that exude, "Oh, this old thing?" while looking effortlessly chic. For an everyday look that keeps the pants as "the focus of your outfit," Lawson says, "add a more minimal sneaker” like Sambas , Gazelles or Air Force 1s . Taveras agrees, adding that mules are another minimalist footwear option ideal for wide-leg jeans.

Wild, wild west
Our style pros agree: Cowboy-core fashion is here to stay. “Western boots are so in,” says Taveras, who adds that the look "really elevates the pants from casual to more polished." Lawson notes that a Western-style boot is one of the season's big trends and recommends "a wide-leg over a taller boot."

Give a little lift
Wide-leg jeans look great in cropped and capri lengths when styled right. “Wide-leg pants that are cut above the ankle, [when] paired with a simple denim jacket, are always a nice, relaxed look,” says Taveras. I like to keep things as monochromatic as possible when going for a bold denim-on-denim look like this. For footwear, pair it with a heel or a sneaker.

Wide-leg jean FAQs
Can petites wear wide-leg jeans?
Yes! Although Lawson notes that “the biggest issue with someone petite trying a wide-leg jean is the length of the jean,” she says hemming is a “super easy fix.” Or skip the alterations by shopping at petite-friendly denim retailers like Anthropologie, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor, says Taveras.
Are there any body types that can't wear wide-leg jeans?
Nope! Lawson says that no matter your body type, from plus-size or straight to curvy , petites and tall, wide-leg cuts “elongate the legs" across the board. "Taller AND shorter girls can look great in a wide leg!" says Lawson. When it comes to styling, Lawson's biggest tip is "knowing proportions to balance out your body. If you are short-waisted, try a mid- to lower jean; and if you're longer-waisted, try a mid- to higher-rise jean.”
What's the best length for wide-leg jeans?
“My perfect length is always grazing the floor with no shoes on,” says Lawson. Taveras agrees: “It’s most flattering to have the hem of the pants hit the ground or just hovering an inch above the ground.” Lawson explains, “More length equals longer-looking legs. And you still have the option to wear your heels or flats.”
What's the easiest way to style wide-leg jeans?
The easiest rule of thumb? “Always create your waist,” Lawson says. “Adding a belt is a super easy way to create a waistline. Doing this automatically makes your body look elongated and proportional for a wide-leg jean.” Other ways to show off your waist: cropped tops that skim the waist of your jeans, a fitted short jacket, or simply tucking in your top.
