7 Winter Coat Trends That Are Warm and Cozy—but Still Stylish

The winter coat trends we're seeing this season make it very doable, layering in luxe fabrics like bouclé and shearling, showcasing structural silhouettes that turn heads, and featuring rich hues that still act as neutrals.

Cozy, Luxe Details

From textured wool to cozy bouclé to super soft shearling, luxe fabrication details are appearing everywhere on coats. "Clients are moving beyond smooth wool toward coats with visual and tactile interest," explains Connie Richardson, personal stylist and founder of By Constance Rose. "This reflects the broader move toward sensory, tactile fashion after years of athleisure dominance." Her pro tip is to let the texture itself be the statement.

Scarf Coats

We love a great two-in-one, and that's exactly what you get with this cozy winter coat trend. VIP fashion stylist Dina Solomon says, "The scarf jacket exploded after appearing in several AW25 collections, especially in the more sculptural shows like Ferragamo and Loewe. The jacket and scarf are integrated into one sweeping silhouette." The beauty is that you feel bundled, but still sleek. 

Solomon says to style it with minimal layers underneath, like a slim turtleneck or fitted knit, so the shape really shines. Also, choose buttery leather or soft wool blends if you want maximum comfort.

Macintosh-esque Silhouette

A classic Macintosh coat is typically a single-breasted, minimalist design with concealed closures, raglan sleeves, and a simple collar. "This coat has been trending on the runways for some time, most recently at Burberry, Stella McCartney, and Chloe," says Liz Williams, outerwear designer at The Checkroom. For example, the brand's Halsted Jacket—which combines the Macintosh silhouette with a touch of the trendy barn jacket aesthetic—is flying off their digital shelves.

Longline Faux Fur or Suede

While wool is a favorite this season, faux fur and suede—especially in longline silhouettes—are a top winter coat trend this season. Solomon says they dominated AW25 runways from Khaite to Saint Laurent. "These materials naturally hold heat so they are physically cozy, but they also have a nostalgic '70s energy that feels comforting and familiar," she notes. "Choose a coat with a belt or wrap closure if you want to maximize warmth; it quite literally hugs the body."

Camel and Chocolate Brown Tones

If you missed the memo, brown tones are the darlings of this season. This applies to your outerwear as well. "Warm neutrals, especially camel and deep chocolate brown, are replacing black as the default winter coat color," Richardson tells us.

"These shades feel fresh and work across seasons, giving you more versatility than traditional black or navy options," she adds. They also work well with both warm and cool colors for a more versatile winter coat option.

Shearling Galore

Shearling is having a big moment right now, too. "From oversized jackets to trim details on boots and bags, it's one of those textures that instantly makes you feel bundled and luxe," says Nasreen Shahi, fashion creator and stylist. "There's something nostalgic about it, but modern shearling pieces feel fresh and elevated."

She suggests mixing textures, noting that shearling looks amazing against denim or leather. Try a cropped shearling jacket with a simple pair of wide-leg jeans and stylish sneakers for an elevated yet casual look.

Oversized Tailored Coats

As maximalism finds its way into every detail of our lives, oversized winter coats are rising in popularity. It's not just about going bigger, though; this season, oversized but tailored is the trend. 

"These are structured pieces with defined shoulders and clean lines, just sized up for a relaxed, layered look," Richardson explains. "This trend stems from the shift toward substantial outerwear that feels polished yet allows for layering. Clients want coats that work over suits for the office and over knitwear on weekends."
