As autumn rolls around, so too does one major fixture of my cold-weather wardrobe : the roll-neck . Admittedly, it hasn't always had the best reputation. Once considered a little fusty, slightly dowdy and decidedly lacking in cool factor—reserved for the resolutely untrendy or, dare I say it, finance bros—the roll-neck has undergone something of an image overhaul in recent years.

Of course, Matthieu Blazy sending model Bhavitha Mandava down the Chanel runway in one certainly helped, but the roll-neck's cool-girl comeback was already well underway. Slimmer fits, unexpected colours and clever styling have transformed it from sensible layering piece into something altogether more desirable.

And now, J.Crew has given the roll-neck its biggest moment yet. With Emma Chamberlain—Gen Z royalty and one of my personal style muses—fronting the campaign, the brand's Tiny Rollneck was always destined for cult status. Sure enough, it didn't take long for it to migrate from the campaign straight onto my Instagram feed. Suddenly, every stylish woman I follow seems to own one, pairing it with relaxed jeans, tailored trousers and midi skirts. Yes: the humble roll-neck has a very convincing claim to being one of autumn 2026's cult buys.

Part of its appeal lies in its simplicity. The close-fitting silhouette makes it an effortless layering piece, but it's the colour offering that makes it particularly tempting. Alongside classic black and navy, you'll find shades of blue and lilac, as well as a seriously chic striped iteration. Wear it alone with jeans now, then layer it under shirts, jackets and coats as temperatures drop.
