Skechers Slip-Ins: GO WALK Arch Fit 2.0

  • Various Skecher styles have been tested at the Textiles Lab, with some designs being named the best value waterproof shoes and the best value shoes for nurses . Although they're budget friendly, our pros have nodded to the brand's comfortable designs and cushioned midsoles. The GO WALK Arch Fit 2.0 feature a slip-on design with laces you don't need to tie, as well as a knit upper that offers some stretch, cushioning, and sparkle (thanks to the embedded rhinestones). Right now, the Skechers Labor Day sale offers shoppers up to 40% off select styles.

Brooks Ghost 17

  • This best-selling shoe is top-tested in the Textiles Lab for its comfortable support and stable fitthat makes it great for walking and running alike. Our consumer testers love the Ghost series for its ample cushioning and comfortable heel, while our pros named it the best running shoe for plantar fasciitis in a recent roundup because of its moderately cushioned midsole and a segmented traction. This popular sneaker has been consistently on sale for a few months—and since Brooks debuted its upgraded Ghost 18 shoe, there's no telling how much longer the Ghost 17 will stay in stock.

HOKA Clifton 10

  • The first sneaker I started wearing when I began my running journey was the Hoka Clifton 8, and now I've owned the Clifton 9 and 10 versions. They are by far my favorite sneaker for short jogs to longer runs up to 13 miles. I wore them for my first half marathon, and my feet weren't too sweaty, I had zero blisters, and my ankles felt great. One tester who tried the Clifton 9 shoes said, "It feels like I'm walking on clouds."The subtle rocker shape is great for both walking and running, since it'll help propel you forward with every step. Plus, our pros named it the best overall HOKA sneaker .

Nike Pegasus 41

  • This 50% discount is the steepest Labor Day deal I found on our top-tested sneakers. One of the most stylish running sneakers on the market (according to our testers), this shoe packs in a lot of features your feet will appreciate while out on a run. We've tested a variety of Nike styles over the decades, and I logged over 50 miles when trying out the Pegasus 41.After embarking on runs anywhere from 3 to 10 miles, I keep these sneakers in my weekly rotation for training runs.

Saucony ProGrid Omni 9

  • Your search for a stylish yet comfortable sneaker is over: The Saucony ProGrid Omni 9 is a chunky shoe that pairs well with casual outfits, but feels comfy to walk and stand in. I regularly wear it to work, and I'm even packing them for my upcoming trip to San Francisco since they'll match my jeans and dresses, but feel supportive while exploring the city (and all those hills!). You can find even more colors and designs for the ProGrid Omni 9 on Saucony's webpage dedicated solely to the shoe.

Reebok Nano X4

  • Hit the gym in this editor-loved sneaker that's great for cross-training. We have tested multiple versions of the Reebok Nano over the years; our experts were impressed by the firm yet flexible base and responsive footbed. "They have a firm base great for lifting, but flexible enough for cardio workouts," said Textiles Lab Associate Director Emma Seymour .

New Balance DynaSoft Nergize Sport V2 Cross Trainer

  • This versatile shoe is excellent for walking and all sorts of workouts in the gym. Our consumer testers found this sneaker to be lightweight, cushioned, breathable, and comfortable straight out of the box. "Right when I put them on, they started molding to my feet," one tester shared.

Kizik Athens 2

  • Rather than struggling with laces, opt for our favorite slip-on shoe , the Kizik Athens 2. "I can confirm these sneakers perform as advertised— my foot perfectly fit inside the shoe after I stepped on the back silicone cage," Seymour shared. She likes to keep the shoes by her door to quickly slip them on to walk her dog or run errands. They're currently 29% off, so now's a great time to grab a pair while the design is still in stock in most sizes and colors.

HOKA Arahi 8

  • Another stellar pick from HOKA is the Arahi 8, and it's on sale for Labor Day. Featuring extra stability in the midsoleto help prevent ankle rolling and cushioning in the heel, this sneaker is designed for those who over-pronate or shoppers who need arch support. "I've worn this shoe mainly for walking and hiking, and I'm impressed by its outsole traction, which has gotten me through multiple Arizona hikes on dirt and loose rock without slipping," one of our testers shared.

Altra Torin 8 Road Running Shoe

  • The roomy toe box of this shoe is great for those with wide feet and helps prevent blisters, bunions, and the dreaded purple toe nails that come from running 30+ miles a week (no one warned me when I started avidly running!). This sneaker also has a zero-to-low drop that promotes a natural position of your foot. Overall, they're a great pair that our testers found to be comfortable and lightweight.

How to find the best running shoe for you

Priya Parthasarathy, D.P.M. , a podiatrist and partner at Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic, previously noted how choosing shoes that fit correctly can enhance your performance while helping reduce injury risks. For instance, shoes that don't fit properly may result in blisters as well as pain in the knees, hip, and back.

In order to first try sneakers on at home (or on a treadmill), Seymour recommends buying shoes with "generous" return policies—all while prioritizing comfort. She says that, while wiggling your toes, you should have about half an inch of room in the toe box. Sizing up is also an option, per Seymour, since feet can swell while working out or running.
