LEGO Just Released Its First ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ Set in Over 15 Years

I own over 100 LEGO sets , but I always think about the one that got away—a SpongeBob Krusty Krab set that retired before I could add it to my collection. That $25 set from 2009 now goes for up to $600 from resellers . But after nearly 17 years, LEGO is finally heading back under the sea with a new SpongeBob SquarePants set for adults. In the immortal words of the iconic yellow sponge himself: "I'm ready! I'm ready, I'm ready!"

In the last decade, LEGO has really stepped up the level of detail and variety in its adult line, so while the original Krusty Krab was cute and made for kids, this nearly 1,800-piece collectible is worthy of display. It doesn't come cheap—$220, to be exact—but considering that it includes SpongeBob's entire street, you're essentially getting multiple sets in one. (Or maybe that's how I'm justifying it to myself.)

Obviously, SpongeBob's pineapple is the scene-stealer here. If you turn it around, you can build his living room and bedroom. But don't stop there: Assemble the whole Conch Street neighborhood with Squidward's distinctive tiki house that features a living room, bedroom, and bathroom, along with a rooftop lounge. Patrick's rock home is also surprisingly detailed when you lift it up.

My personal favorite part is Jellyfish Fields, where you'll create the tentacled pink creatures that SpongeBob can catch with his net. Did I mention this set includes a Gary figure? He doesn't meow, but he's still quite adorable.

If you want the SpongeBob nostalgia, but want something a little bit more affordable and less involved, there's also a brand-new LEGO BrickHeadz for only $13. The blocky set is only 72 pieces, meaning that it's a fast build that can typically be done in under 30 minutes (I've timed it myself). BrickHeadz make a great addition to a desk or bookshelf, because it measures about 3 inches tall when finished. It's also suitable for younger builders, ages 10 and up, and it makes a great stocking stuffer.

Both sets just went on sale September 1, but I've been seeing a lot of licensed sets sell out immediately. That doesn't mean they are gone for good, but they can potentially be on backorder. So if you want these sets in your home soon, I'd order them now.
