Cleveland Browns Training Camp: Day 10 Recap

Full pads ignite a ferocious, fight-filled practice in Berea as the Cleveland Browns QB battle took a stunning turn on Day 10 of training camp.

Video Transcript

In the four years I've been covering the Cleveland Browns, Saturday's day 10 of training camp under Todd Monken was easily the most competitive practice that I've ever witnessed live in Berea.

It was intense, there was a fight, there was multiple skirmishes that ki- kind of broke out at different phases of practice, and there was a lot of good competition happening out on the football field.

And it came also with a major plot twist as far as the Browns quarterback competition is concerned because Todd Monken started practice, or before practice, told us in the media that you could see Deshaun Watson be the first up with the first team during seven-on-sevens.

As it turned out, he wound up being the first quarterback up not only in seven-on-sevens, but in all the 11-on-11s, and by the time the final whistle had blown, he had taken every single first team rep that day 10 had to offer.

It felt like a sign or a symbol of some sort that Watson had maybe taken a lead in the quarterback competition.

We got official word from the team, or at least a team spokesperson, that was basically Todd saying, "Hey, I wanted to see Deshaun with s- with some- with a certain set of sk- of, of personnel groupings today."

That personnel grouping or those personnel groupings, though, was the first team.

It was the first team skill players.

It was the first team offensive line with a few slight changes because some people had left with injuries.

But it was an interesting development in this entire thing, and Deshaun Watson, by the way, made the most of those reps.

I think had his second consecutive day with a strong performance.

His third day in four days, that was one of his better days of camp as he starts to sort of climb his way back into this thing.

And Shador had a pretty solid day himself, working in mostly with the twos and sharing some reps with Dylan Gabriel, completed a lot of passes, was pretty decisive.

Had some balls that weren't quite as crisp, but did the best he could with the reps that he got.

But again, it looms large that the week leading into, as we get ready for a week in-- going into a game, a preseason matchup with the Chicago Bears, that we saw this massive sort of shift, if you will, in the thought process and the deployment of Deshaun Watson and of these quarterbacks.

We'll find out what it means on Monday, but in the meantime, we got you covered with everything that went down, including Spencer Fano and Jared Verse going at it head-to-head, rolling around and wrestling on the ground in a fight and much, much more.

Make sure you stick around and follow along all training camp long with Browns on Tap.
