Cleveland Browns Training Camp: Day 1 Recap
Grant Delpit's mid-practice extension set the tone for an eventful first day of Cleveland Browns training camp, as Deshaun Watson struggled with the ones.

Tom Monken's first training camp with the Cleveland Browns is off and running, day one in the books, and it was an eventful one from start to finish as really it started with, some off-the-field news.
Grant Delpit was actually out on the practice field, not participating, seemingly starting a hold-in situation, and then Andrew Berry walked over to him, let him know that they'd inked a new contract extension, something he was hoping for as his-- he was in the final year of his deal, and we-- you watch Grant Delpit put his helmet on, his fellow safeties all mob him in excitement, and then he started participating just right then in drills.
So that's how the day started, another contract, done for the Cleveland Browns.
They, they're keeping Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit for the foreseeable future now as part of this organization.
They'll be sort of backbone players, leaders of this team.
That's obviously got a lot of youth and is trying to go through a roster rebuild.
Meanwhile, the quarterback competition obviously was center stage for the first time, and Tom Monken made it known before practice that not much had changed since the spring.
He kept to his word.
The rep share was similar to what it was back in May and June, two-spotting with the two guys on separate fields to start things off, and then ultimately, that sort of divulged into them merging together for eleven-on-elevens.
Both quarterbacks getting off to a bit of a slow start, I would say.
But as the day continued, Shador Sanders had probably the more consistent-- He sort of settled in, I would say, day of the two.
Deshaun, it was a rough one out there.
During the first eleven-on-eleven portion of practice that when they were two-spotting, he threw back-to-back interceptions, first to Denzel Ward, who made a really good play.
The ball was a little late on a crossing route, but it was still a, a really good play by Denzel Ward coming across the field to step in front and intercept it.
And then the next play, newest, the newest member of this team, or one of the newer members of this team, D'Mari Mathis, got Deshaun Watson as he didn't see him kinda creeping on a, on, on another crossing route situation from the other side of the field, undercuts it, gets the pick.
And so that was a rough start, and it didn't get worlds better for him.
A lot of inconsistent throws, a lot of wobbly throws, just not his best day to open things up.
Still plenty of time, though, for them to sort that out, and Tom Monken made it clear that the only real deadline he has to make a decision at quarterback is week one of the season.
So we'll see, a-and he made it all-- he ma-- he also emphasized that it's up to the players to decide who ends up winning the starting job.
So that rolls on into day two.
We'll see what the rep share looks like then.
I think Denzel Ward was probably a standout today with the interception, a couple other nice plays and coverage today.
