「1.CROSS This cross, influenced by those flourish of medieval architecture, reflects the Christian inspiration that lay behind Albert’s principles. Sitting abovethe apex of a spire, it symbolises hope.」
「2. VIRTUES The four figures on the corners represent the moral virtues of prudence, temperance, fortitude and justice. They also embody the Christian virtues of faith,hope, charity and humility.」

「4. DEDICATION
Above each pointed arch is a dedicatory message that underlines the memorial:
“To the memory of Albert, Prince Consort. As a tribute of their gratitude. For a life devoted to the public good. Queen Victoria and her people.”」

The ornate underside of this canopy features the coats of arms belonging to both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The Latin motto, ‘Prince Albert - of Faithful andTrue’ They sit amongst a sea of golden stars.」

The premature death of Prince Albert (1819–1861) was a shock that sparked a nation’s grief. Queen Victoria (1819–1901), consumed with sadness, commissioned this magnificent memorial to her beloved husband.」
Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha married his cousin Queen Victoria in 1840. A talented and cultured man, he supported the arts, science, trade and industry. He was instrumental in organising the Great Exhibition of 1851, and promoted social issues such as housing and education.」
The memorial was designed by George Gilbert Scott and unveiled in 1872. The location was chosen for its line of sight across to the Royal Albert Hall, creating an enduring visual connection between the two monuments.」
The memorial cost £120,000, paid for by public subscription. Hundreds of leading sculptors and craftsmen of the day were involved. The statue of Albert, designed by John Henry Foley, was gilded in 1875.」
The statue of Albert was not ready in time for the unveiling of the memorial in 1872. It was finally installed three years later, in 1875.
