The Belgian government and banks have agreed to pay $170 million to Holocaust survivors, their families, and the Jewish community to compensate Belgian Jews for property that was looted(略奪する)by Nazi occupiers. Overall, $54 million will be paid to about 5,000 individual claimants(請求者); the remainder of the restitution(損害賠償)will be placed in a Jewish trust.
Some 50,000 Jews lived in Belgium prior to WWII, and approximately half died during the Holocaust.
