Urban life or local life
Today, I would like to consider if I prefer urban life or local life.To this question, I reluctantly answer to urban life.Actually, I love natural life. I love mountains, rivers, forests, pastures, farming and every thing in rural area. But to live there, I have to earn some money living there.This seems too difficult for me in following reasons.Too little jobs.As rural area mainly consists of farming and little retailer shops and rural governments, it is very difficult to get a job, especially for married women with kids. Usually women are considered to be part-timers and could not earn as much as I wish.Difficult to be a farmer.In Japan, it used to be difficult to be a farmer. People living in farming areas used to be very closed and there were strict regulation to inhibit non-farmers to buy farming lands. But in these days, those situations are changing due to rural exodus and aging population. And consequently, the number of newly joined farmers turned to increase in year 2000 after 30 years of decreasing.Still, to me, to be a farmer seems to be too difficult.Farmers seems to have no holiday, little farmers seems to be profitable.I don't know if this is true, and if I truly want to live in rural area, I will search for the truth and seek for the solution be a farmer, but my incentive for it is not so strong.So, my tendency to rural area must just be a dream, and I will answer to the question if I prefer a rural life of urban life, I will reluctantly answer to urban life.(283 words)

Could Lyra find her friend?The story starts to turn to great saga.(Review)In fact, I had read this book, in the process of extensive reading, just after reading 1 million words of English books.At that time, this book, YL 8, was too difficult for me, and I could only catch the story at the best.This time, when I first started listening, I thought the conversation is too fast and difficult to catch, because of its British English. But as I go further, I started to catch the British accent and find myself listening to it relaxed.As the reading is with full cast and it is as if listening to a radio drama, it is fun to hear it. Story is superb.

Three most important preparations tor earthquakes
Today, I would like to think about the three most important preparations for earthquakes.Japan is said to be the nation of earthquakes. Some might remember the disaster of Kobe earthquake, 1995, with death of more than 6,000 and 43,000 who was wounded.The Great Kanto earthquake occurred in 1923 has ended with 142,800 of casualties.The director general of Japan Meteorological Agency once said that the great Tokai earthquake could be occurred at any moment now, that I think we should now prepare for the big earthquakes.To prepare envisioned huge earthquakes, what would be the three most important preparations?To this question, I think following three points are the most important.First point: talk about the correspondence procedure and evacuation site.My husband and I are working fulltime that we have to talk among family member how to take correspondence and where to evacuate, and let this notice to nursery school and baby sitters. Add to this, I should check the rout to walk home, which should be about 23 km, and seems quite far for me to walk.Second point: conduct an evacuation drill.When the disaster occurred when we are at home, we should evacuate our house efficiently. To this, I have to prepare survival kit and conduct and evacuation drill with my family members. This experience might differ in live or death.Third point: prevent the falling of furniture.The main cause of injures in Kobe Earthquake was that of been stuck between fallen houses and furniture. We can now purchase several equipments to prevent the falling of furniture.To conclude my essay, I think the three most important preparations for earthquake are; to talk about the correspondence procedure and evacuation site, to conduct an evacuation drill and to prevent the falling of furniture.(300 words)

Is Japan democracy?
Today, I would like to consider if Japan is a nation of democracy.If I look in the dictionary, it says "democracy: 1) a system of government in which all the people of a country can vote to elect their representatives, 2) a country which has this system of government, 3) fair and equal treatment of everyone in an organization, etc., and their right to take part in making decisions " (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary).Japan has a system to vote to elect their representatives. So, literally, Japan must be categorize to democracy.But I think Japan is still in a transition period to democracy in following two reasons.First, lack of participation to politics.Yes, we have right to vote to elect our representatives, but how many of us are truly concerned about politics? The rate of turnouts to general election for the House of Representatives averaged about 70%, but it is getting lower to about 60%. One of the reasons to this is said that the voters are thinking that their life will never change according to the election.Japanese tend to consider government as "okami", the higher people, and the completely different hierarchy. Ordinary people endure either good or bad policies the governor take, just as children endure either good or bad their parents treat.This reads Japanese people to think politics are not their concerns. Japanese polls are some how popularity poll without conceiving the policies the candidates have. They have an illusion that the winner of votes will pick up voter's desire without any appeal, just like their parents.As a consequence, member of assembly would never knew the desire of people and people would grew disappointed by it.Second, lack of fair and equal treatment.Japanese love "equal treatment". But to me, it seems just "same in lowest point".For example, in Japan, skipping or doubling the class would never happen. Accomplished or not, students move up to next grade, just because people believe it to be equal treatment.I believe that truly fair treatment should allow every student to accomplish their tasks whether it takes 3 years or 2 months.We have a saying, which says, "The nail that sticks out gets banged down". This inhibits us from taking a lead to better policy.In conclusion, I would say Japan is in the verge of democracy, but not yet completed, because of people's lack of participation to politics and lack of fair and equal treatment.

Right to Smoke, Right to Smoke-free
Today, I would like to consider whether we should be generous to smokers or to non-smokers.Attitude to smoking varies from countries. When I went to New Zealand, I found NZ is very strict about smoking. US is also known for strict about smoking, but I feel Asian countries are rather loose about smoking.In Japan, I think the separation of smoking areas is progressing in the offices and public spaces, though insufficient in restaurant and bar.To the question whether we should be generous to smokers or to non-smokers, I definitely would go for non-smokers in following two reasons.The first reason is that I think smokers have no right to make non-smokers inhale toxic smoke.Though smokers are smoking on their self-responsibility or not, they have no right to make non-smokers inhale toxic smoke. The harm of passive smoking is apparent that it is said to be the secondhand smoke includes three times more toxic substance than mainstream cigarette smoke and a wife of smoker has twice a risk of lung cancer than a wife of non-smoker.The second reason is the bad manners of smokers.When you walk on the pavement of Japan, you could surely find thousands of cigarette butts all scattered around the streets and ditches. Smokers usually considers open-space to be smoking space and eager to smoke before going inside the building. They don't hesitate to throw cigarette buts to the streets. Even some of the car drivers turn out their full ashtrays on street. Some of the smokers consider them as high-minded and put their cigarette butts in beverage cans and throw it in recycling boxes. No manner-improving campaigns did improve the situation. It is a time to tighten our attitude to misbehaving smokers.In conclusion, I would like to stress we should tighten the policy regarding smoking, because we should keep our right not to inhale toxic smoke and to improve smoker's behaviors.

More relaxed education policy
Today, I would like to think about more relaxed education policy.Out of regret that the cram education after the Word War 2 had caused the increasing number of children refusing to go to school, crass room chaos and bullying issue, Japan has introduce the more relaxed education policy since 1980. It aims the departure from education giving too much importance to test results and to foster the imagination.But in consequence, decline in academic standards has advocated recently.Now, should we tighten the educational schedule or continue the more relaxed education policy?To this question, I would answer that we should continue the relaxed policy in following two reasons.First;We need creative person.Due to narrow land space and little natural resources, Japan has only human resource to be our weapon. Currently, Japan is exporting manufactures, and importing foods, energy and raw materials. What enabling Japan to export manufactures is high technique and good quality.But other countries are catching up with technique and quality.To keep buying foods and energy, we should be competitive in manufacturing.Here comes the need of creative person. We cannot just lag US’ creative new technology. We have to create high-value added products and services.Second;We have to find our values other than competitiveness.If we put too much importance on deviation rate, our minds determine our satisfaction with the major of win or lose.But when you look around the word with relaxed mind, you can find synergy and harmony. Aiming the better society, we should find our values other than competitivenessThus, in conclusion, I would like to say, the relaxed education policy is important because Japan needs creative person and Japanese have to find our values other than competitiveness.

Should JAPAN increase ODA?
Today I would like to consider if Japan should increase Official Development Assistance, ODA.Japan's ODA has been decreasing after the peak of year 1999. The amount of ODA in 2004 was almost half of 1999.But Japanese ministry of foreign affair is eager to increase ODA, in targeting to accomplish a seat of permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.To the question, "Should we increase ODA?", I would answer "No" in following two reasons.The first reason is that we have no money to spare for.Japan's government bill at the end of FY2005 is estimated to be 538 trillion yen.As for FY 2005, about 42% of the revenue and 22% of the annual expenditure are of government debt.Applying this to households account, wages is \400,00 include bonus, \150,000 for loan payment, \390,000 for everyday expenditure, \130,000 allowance for old parents (allocation to local governments) and you are short for \280,000, which you have to lend it. Your amount of debt is \53,000,000.I will declare personal bankruptcy in this situation.When you want to reform this finance, you have to increase wages and decrease expenditure.But Japan is aging rapidly. Budget for social security is more and more increasing. And economic situation is not recovered yet.There is no space for us to spend for donation.The second reason is that the meaning of ODA is obscure.After the World War 2, Japan has positioned the ODA to compensation to the damage caused by Japan through war. Thus we put the ODA priority on Asian countries.But China, the major country for ODA, has developed rapidly, sending manned rocket to space, shedding out of developing countries. Further more, China's people do not recognize the ODA Japan paying with great effort, and mount a riot to Japanese embassy.This make Japanese people doubt the meaning of ODA.For conclusion, I would say that we don't have to increase ODA because we have no money to spare for and the meaning of ODA is obscure.

Restrict adolescents' access to Websites
Today, I would like to consider if restriction of adolescents' access to certain websites in my hose is necessary or not.In these days, we could pick up every conceivable information from web site. From ruled pornography to how-to suicide, there is information that I dare not to let my daughters see it. Do we have to protect our children from this abominable information?I think that restriction of adolescents' access to certain website is not necessary in my house in following two reasons.First reason is that they can get the information after all.There are so many internet-cafés around. When they visit their friends house, there might be unrestricted PCs. Restricting access to websites just in my house will never stop my children to get those information.So, I think, assuming they would inevitably see ill minded information, to teach them how we should respect reproductive process or each one's life is much more important than just to restrict an access to websites.The second reason is that I consider curiosity as source of growth.Curiosity to various events in the world is an attribute of youngsters.As I write in previous paragraph, nothing can prevent teenagers from accessing horrible information. More ban to access, they get more curious to get the information.Thus I think to show how to digest the poisonous information to the supplement to the soul and think about the real meaning of life would be much more help for their glorious future.Concluding my essay today, I would like to stress that I don't think the access restriction to certain websites is necessary in my house because we could never shut out my children accessing the information and we should show their way to be grown even by those information.(296 words)

Right to Die, Right to Live.
Today, I would like to think if we should accept the right-to-die in brain damage case.I think the right-to-die should be allowed in following two reasons.First, the burden should be too heavy for their family to bear almost for ever.The mental and financial burden to patient's family should be enormous.Even if the patient is my husband or child, I think I would be suppressed by exhaustion taking care of the patient sooner or later. Though I can not be able to decide to end patient's life, I desire for the law to extinguish patient's life within certain period of incommunicable state.Second, the patient's will should be respected.Though the patient can not show their will in this condition, some of the polls says that more than half of the voters polled to own death in same condition with Scivao's.If it comes to me, I also would choose to have a merciful death in same condition.Do you know a woman named Terri Schiavo?She was a 41-old-brain damaged woman who became the centerpiece of a national right-to-die battle, died 31 March 2005, nearly two weeks after doctors removed the feeding tube that had sustained her for more than a decade.Terri suffered severe brain damage in 1990, when she was 26, after her heart stopped because of a chemical imbalance that was believed to have been brought on by an eating disorder. Court-appointed doctors ruled she was in a persistent vegetative state, with no real consciousness or chance of recovery.Some said that though severely brain-damaged, Terri Schiavo breathes and maintains a heart beat and blood pressure on her own. While her vision is impaired, she can see and move her limbs. She needs only a feeding tube connected to her stomach to sustain her life. The case was fought between her husband who constantly implies that his wife would not have wanted to live in her condition and parents opposed believing that she will retrieve someday.In this case, the rumor that her husband said to have another women and child, or he would receive great amount of inheritance rouse the further argument.Though, I think that the right-to-die should be allowed to free patient's family from mental and fiscal burden and to respect patient's will.

In the morning, when it is not raining, I aim myself to walk slowly with my daughters to nursery school watching insects and birds. In these couple of days, so many aphids were falling down from roadside trees. When my daughters and I first saw the white tiny insect, we were not sure what it was. But in the few days it seems to grow to green aphids. And also we found many larvae of ladybird around the aphids. We are wondering how the larvae of ladybird gathered there. The stage of larvae varies from very small one to nearly imagoes. Pension Problem 1: What is the cause of Japanese Pension Problem
It is said that National Pension Program in Japan is now on the verge of corruption.Today, I would like to think about the cause of the problem.I think there are two main causes to endanger Japanese Pension system.First cause is the aging society.Japanese society is rapidly aging.When National Annuity Plan started at 1961, the rate of over 65 years old was less than 6%. In 1985, it grew to 10% and it was 19.5% at October 2004.Japanese pension system is that working people to support aged people; which means progression of aging society generates heavier burden on working generation.For example, in 1961, the insurance premium to employee's pension plan was 3.5% of the wages, in the contrary it is almost 14% in 2005, and it will be gradually increased to 18% by 2017.This is causing the feeling of unfairness to younger generation.Second cause is price indexation.Japanese pension is index-linked pension. Which means the entitlement of pension will increase in inflation situation, but decrease in deflation situation.Japan is now in a long recession and index rate is decreasing. This suggests decreasingin entitlement while premium will increase in previous condition. This is causing the feeling of distrustfulness.Thus, in conclusion, I would like to stress two main reasons, which are aging society and price indexation, to the cause of Japanese Pension System.

As it is rainy season in Japan, it was raining this morning.For a working mother who has to take her children to nursery school in the morning, morning rain is quite a defeating event.My younger daughter, 2 and a half, is now in brink of stepping up from a toddler to a child, found it difficult to walk using an umbrella.She is too heavy for me to carry her to the nursery school.Besides, older daughter who is 6 is still merely a child that needs my attention.To make my morning easy, on rainy days I forced my daughters into the car and ride them to nursery school. Are Cool Biz key to global warming?
Today, I would like to conceive if "Cool Biz" contributes to reduce CO2 emitting.Do you know the word "Cool Biz"? It is a movement to wear cooler clothing at office to set higher air conditioning temperature, advocated by Junichiro Koizumi, the prime minister of Japan.I think cool biz is one of the approaches to reduce energy consumption but it depends on how widely it will be accepted.As I mentioned, Cool Biz is to wear cooler clothing at office, which is tie-less, jacket-less fashion. It enables to set higher air conditioning temperature, and 28 degree is recommended temperature.If you wear long sleeve shirts, tie and jacket, it is too hot to work in 28-degree circumstance, but it might be bearable in cooler clothing. It is said that 1 degree higher setting of air conditioner saves 10% of electricity.What prevents the acceptance of this movement is the elder counterparts' attribute to formal suits.If your counterparts are not accepting tie-less and jacket less fashion, you have to at least wear tie and jacket at formal meeting with your counterparts.According to the study, 72% of the entities surveyed said their executives wore ties even in the summer. The study also showed that workers at a majority of the organizations wore jackets when meeting people outside the firm.In conclusion, I think "Cool Biz" may be a small key to global warming, but the whole-society participation should be needed.My office? Today, I left office earlier to attend a parent's meeting at nursery school. Have you ever imagined what you are like 10 years from now?I think it is very good chance to think of what you are doing a decade after, because 5 years is to near and 20 years it to far to be a guide to your life.To have a satisfied life, imagine 10 years after is one of good ways.For example, ten years from now, what am I doing? My daughters should be 16 and 12, they are high school and junior high school student. I think am working at the same place and I have a staff or two. So in this 10 years, maybe I have to train myself to be a good boss.Then, I have to define what is a good boss.First of all, I think good boss have to have their own major of values.Good boss should clearly show their subordinates what is the goal of their team. This goal should be accord with their values.Second, I think good boss have learn to delegate.If you could clearly show your staff the clear goals in first place, then a good boss should delegate the way of doing to his/her staff.Thus, if I am in a position to have subordinates and want to be good boss, I have to seek my values and learn to delegate.In conclusion, this short thinking of viewing 10 years after gave me good chance to determine what I should do now, so why not try once.

The Brethren (by John Grisham)(supposed YL:7 supposed words:117,000 Total words:6,320,924)*Synopsis*The Brethren are imprisoned three ex-judges, who contrived enormous scheme to extort money from the victims outside the jail.One of the victims happened to be a candidate of USA president!*Review*Unlike the Grisham books I read recently, it was not a bit preachy or pious. I could enjoy the book just as entertainment.The writing is clear and precise, and it is good in rhythm.I've re-realized him as good writer.

Memory of Travel
Memory of TravelWhat is your most treasured memory of Travel?I think everybody has one or two treasured memory of travel.For me, as I go abroad on private twice a year, I have a lot of pleasured memories but the most treasured one is of course the one on honeymoon.Our honeymoon was to New Zealand in July.Before starting scuba diving, my husband and I were devoted in skiing.Actually, almost every weekend in the winter, we were in Niigata prefecture or Nagano prefecture, famous ski areas in Japan.So, upon marriage we planed to hold wedding in summer and go to Ski in New Zealand as honeymoon.As expected, ski in New Zealand was wonderful. Especially heli-ski, that you ride in chopper to go to the top of the mountains and ski the deserted bland new snow slope for several kilometers, was unforgettable.Japanese ski slope is always compacted with special cars and crowded with so many skiers. What a difference from New Zealand ski!Ironically, enormous experience in New Zealand prevented us from Japanese ski area and next summer we started scuba diving.Thus after that our visit to the snow mountain became so rare.This makes my memory of honeymoon to New Zealand more precious.

【Read】* Financial Times : ○* The Brethren： 50P (to P404)【Listen】* Angels and Demons 2:01 (to 7:28)* AFN : 15 min (during washing face and make up)【Write】* blog : ○******Today, I could listen to "Angels and Demons" about 2 hours.Ultimately speaking, I think success of learning English depends on the amount of input.So, to manage to integrate listening time, I listen to my MP3 player whenever I walk and do house hold chore.For example, today, I listened the device while; hanging the washing for 30minutes in the morning, 10 minutes walking from nursery school to railroad station, 5 minutes from station to office, 15 minutes walking to and from bookstore at lunch break, 5minutes from office to station, 15 minutes from station to my house, 40 minutes during cooking dinner.This made almost 2 hours.You might think 2-hour listening is impossible, but sum of short listening might became surprisingly long.

Why the Soccer is getting major in Japan?Yesterday, Japan grabbed a ticket to Germany, this year's host country of world cup of football. 20,000 supporters gathered at National Stadium just to support Japan varsity on screen. A couple of decades ago, the major sports in Japan was Baseball, but football is dramatically rising its position now a days.Why does the Soccer getting major in Japan?I think there are three reasons.One is because the change of Japanese culture.Baseball is a sport of strategy and team play, but in contrary, Soccer is a sport more weighed in personal performance.Japanese used to feel proud to meet the command of supervisor, but young people tend to act more independently.Second, it is because of advancement of media.When the baseball popularity was at its peak, TV set was quite expensive and few families could afford it. The major media was Radio at the time.Baseball has a settled position of players and it is easy to explain by narration. But now, the major media is TV. Baseball is somewhat dull to broadcast in TV.In the contrary, Soccer is very speedy, and home and away are mixed in the pitch. It is quite difficult to understand what's going on just listening to radio caster. But when it comes to TV, the dynamic speed and strategic formation and splendid performance of players just fit the image casting.Third and the last reason I think is that fashion of players.Baseball players used wear military like short cut hair and traditional looked uniform. But soccer players are very free in their appearance, breeched semi-long hair, gold necklace and baggy pants which appeals to youngsters.Thus, in conclusion, I think it is the change of Japanese culture, advancement of media and appealing fashions of players are the reasons to the rise of Soccer popularity in Japan.

Do you like shopping?
Today, I would like talk about the topic "Do I like shopping?".It is said that generally speaking, women love shopping.In my case, I would say it depends on what I'm going to buy.For me, daily shopping is not for fun but a chore.I am a full time worker. So, I have to do all the shopping for daily use in weekends.I prepare the shopping list and visit several discount shops to buy everything I need in coming week, in reasonable price.It is nothing but a chore.But if the story comes to shopping related to hobby, I say, I love shopping.My hobby is to take pictures under water.It needs many expensive equipment such as camera, water proof housing to contain camera, flash light, lens and on and on.They are very expensive, that I can't buy so often, but it is always fun to think about what to buy next.For conclusion, to the question whether I like shopping, I would say yes and no, it depends on what to buy.
