The following is my Nov.30th diary:---------------------------------◎KEY WORDS: Necklace & LoveAs you may imagine, I'm not a person who wears a necklace. This may be true and actually I did not ever wear a necklaceuntil I began worrying over my own romance. Now I wear a necklace made in Peru which, according to an oldlegend in the country, protects a person who wears it (me)against any evil things and makes his/her wishes come true.I found and bought this necklace at an Asian Fancy Goods Shopin Kokura about one month ago and since then,I have been wearing this necklace for this past month, strongly prayingthat my romance will go very well as I wish. Why do I worry about my romance?------------------------Usually when I fall in love with a lady, I don't worryabout it. I have no reason to worry in a normal case.In this case, however, the lady I fall in love is one of my students.I have determined not to fall in love with any of my studentssince when I had to break up with Ms. K.about 8 years ago.At that time I had a very bitter and tough experience. So I made up my mind not to fall in love with any of my students anymore, despite the fact that all of my pupils are very attractive women. But one day this summer I found myself falling in love with a student ofmine.I got surprised at this fact, because I had determined firmly not tohave any romantic feeling toward my students.Since then, I have been in the middle of worry.--------------------------------------◎Key Word: With-expressionI had an English lesson with one my of deshis at 6:00 p.m.She's a college student majoring in English literature.Today we practiced English pronunciation, using three tonguetwisters. Then, we tried to talk with each other in English. After that, I taught her how to express ideas in English.Especially I taught her how to use "with-" expressions. For example, "With Ken's advice in mind, I took the test" (ケンのアドバイスを念頭に、テストを受けた)and"With a strong criticism from China and Korea, Mr. Koizumigoes to Yasukuni Shrine".(中国、韓国からの強い非難がある中、小泉首相は 靖国に参拝する)"With"-expression is very useful especially we translatea complicated Japanese sentence containing several piecesof information.(複数の情報を有する1つの文章を訳する場合に付帯状況のwithの言い方は便利です)---------------------------------------◎Cream StewI cooked a cream stew this evening.I bought some potatoes, onions, some pork andstew roux at a supermarket around my apartment anddiced the vegetables and cut the pork into smaller pieces. Then, I cooked cream stew, a good dish for a dinnerin winter. But I noticed that I missed one ingredient for seasoning. It was milk. I forgot to buy it and so I didn't add any milkto the stew. The taste of the stew was not so bad butnot so good or creamy without milk.ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーKen Suetsugu

◎ Tue. Nov. 29thI had a following schedule today:* 9:00 Departure* 9:30 Arrival at Yakiyama Elementary School English classes (one for 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders, and another for 4th, 5th and 6th graders)*11:30 Departure*13:00 Meeting with my assistant*16:00 English lesson with my deshi*17:00 English lesson with Mr.&Ms. Artists*18:30 English lesson with Mrs. Teacher and her son.----------------------------------------------* Got up at 4 a.m. Read newspaper and checked e-mailsand the Internet for collecting information.Today I was supposed to go to Yakiyama Elementary Schoolto teach English to its students around 9:30(the total number of the students are 34.)This school is on the top of Mr. Yakiyama which standsbetween Iizuka City and Fukuoka City. This school is small with 34 students in total and lessthan 10 teachers, but the students are not as badlysophisticated as those at other schools downtown in Iizuka City.Today one of my students joined and helped meto do the classes as my assistant. She came to my apartment around 8:00 all the wayfrom Kokonoe-Town, Oita Pref. Her town is very famous for its spa resorts. We arrived at the school around 9:20 andprepared for the two classes at the principle's room. While we were discussing, the vice-principle came to the roomand asked me to come to the school again on Dec. 5th."Dec.5th? It's next Monday, isn't?", I said."O.K. If I have to be here again in the morning, I am available on that day."First, we had a class for students in the 1st, 2nd and 3rdgrades. They are 17 in total.I taught them the relationship between an item andthe number of the item: For example, I showed a picture of three apples.Usually, it seems to me that, other English teachers or lecturersat any kid's English course don't attach importance to the number of an item.So they tend to make their students just say "apple".But it is important for us or English learners to describe the name and number of an item at the same time.So it should be "apples" or "three apples".I showed my students many pictures. Then, my assistant wrote down many simple calculations(like 3+4= / 4-2= / etc) on the blackboard. I made my students say these calculations with the answer to each in English. This training was followed by the last section of my planned class.I proposed to them that we would have a shopping gamenext time and told them to name ingredients or foods weneed when we cook curry & rice. After that, I played a role of a customer and my assistantplayed a role of a grocery shop owner. We showed to the students how to sell and buy vegetablesin English.↑<I am teaching how to pronouce English words using tongue twisters>↓In my next lesson, I am going to divide the students intoseveral groups and make them experience in selling and buyingthingsI did almost the same thing in the next class of 4th,5th and 6th graders. But I also taught how to saydivision in English such as . is (6 over three is two). Please keep it in mind.We came back to my apartment around 13:00 after enjoying lunch.at "POPEYE" in Dainichiji, Iizuka. This assistant left here for Oita around 15:00.She is one of my romantic advisers. At 16:00 I had an English lesson with my deshi. We practiced the pronunciation of English words.I was really happy and glad to have this student here aftertwo weeks' interval. She's a promising deshi and will be a great English communicator. After that, I had two lessons.-------------------------------------------------------I was very tired today after a series of English lessons:KEN SUETSUGU

◎Mon, Nov. 28thI was so excited from this morning today,'cuz the fortune of one of my students wouldbe determined today. The student is a sister of my deshi(college student)and is a third-year student at a local high school. She had an entrance exam on Nov. 18th andtoday was the day she would receive a noticeof the result of her test. She made it and passed the test!!When I came home from Fukuoka City, I turned onmy PC to check an e-mail from her.She was supposed to e-mail me the result, whether she would fail or make it.Lots of e-mails came to my PC as usual, many of them were Spam emails, though. Her e-mail was one of them. She said that she passed the test.I was really relieved to hear a good news. This morning, I had an English (translation) lessonwith a fellow translator at 10:00.I advised him some expressions used in the translationof a resume and a report. After this lesson, I went to Tenjin, Fukuokato fulfill an appointment with a certain organizationand visit some customers.I gave DVDs of old and good movies to thosecustomers, because they gave me the most numberof orders this month. After returning from Fukuoka and checking e-mails,I prepared for English lessons I would do atYakiyama Elementary School next day.I needed at least three hours to get thingsprepared for the lessons.Ken Suetsugu

◎ Sunday, Nov. 27th Key Word: English lessons/ CNN/ long johns Every Sunday, I have two or three students.First, I have an English lesson with a local elementary schoolteacher. He's one of the oldest pupils of mine. This sensei hasbeen taking my course for about 6 years or so.At first his goal was to get the semi-first grade of STEP(英検)andhe already achieved this goal. Now he aims to get the first grade. This morning he and I watched CNN news. He kindlytaped the news every time before the lesson at home.Since I don't have any tuners to receive CNN,he kindly videoed the CNN news shows and othershows for me. This morning we watched a news show titled "AmericanMorning". A male anchorman spoke too fast. This class was a hard training to me, too. At 11:00, I had another class with a gentleman. We practiced how to express our opinions in English, learning useful expressions. He asked me several questions about English expressions. One of them was really unique. Do you, guys, happen to know the meaning "long johns"?When I was asked this questions, I was afraid that I did not know this words. "Long johns" means "long winter underwear".I didn't know this expression. This is what we call "パッチ"or "モモヒキ". Usually I have an English lesson with the first senseiat 9:00, which is followed by another lesson with a collegestudent from Fukuoka. She cancelled today's lesson.(This college student wants to become an elementary schoolteacher after school. She says that she also would like toteach English to children, considering English will be a regularsubject sometime soon in the future in elementary schools.) Then, I have the other English lesson with the second sensei. After the two lessons, I spent the rest of the day doing <tensaku>.I had to spend almost eight hours checking all the translations I receivedfrom all of you. It's a really tough work!!!! ----------------------------------------------------◎Alternative Dairy (裏日記) ☆Girl Shy☆ As you may know, I worship or admire several people.Eiji SAWAMURA is one of them.He was an excellent, splendid, and wonderful pitcher of GIANTSbefore world war the second. I like reading a story about him(biography).According to the book, Sawamura was a person of what theycalled "girl-shy". Girl-shy is a man who becomes very shybefore ladies and awkward in handling his romance. When many female fans rushed to his accommodationafter a baseball game, Sawamura used to go into a closetin his room and hide himself. I admit that I am girl-shy, too. I become too nervous before a lady I love to talk to her in a relaxing manner. This is my big problem.I tend to talk to a lady I love best in a clumsy way andexpression and so this state of my mind affects the lady, resulting in failure to have a very good and friendly conversation.(ぎこちなく話してしまい、表情も硬いので、それが相手にうつって 良い会話ができまっしぇん。) On the other hand, I used to try my best to pick up young ladies(ナンパ) at discos or dancing clubs when I was younger.Of course, I usually failed to pick them up!!(even though I used to enjoy dance with them cheek-to-cheekall the time.)Even now, if I find a charming lady or women anywhere,I might do the same thing. But before the lady I love, I suddenly becomesuper-awkward. It's a really big problem which hinders mefrom developing a romantic relationship with a lady I love best.Would you mind my asking what to do get over this symptom? Speaking of discos, I used to enjoy dancingand sharing a good time with ladies in Juliana Tokyoover ten years ago, when that disco became a verypopular. My workplace was near this disco._____________________ Ken Suetsugu

◎ Thu. Nov. 24th Today I had to concentrate on translatingbusiness information. This was a very tiring work(疲れさせる仕事). ◎ Fri. Nov. 25th--(1) Today I had a short free time around 1:00 p.m.after visiting a local publishing company(see below fordetails). The company is close to Hakata JR station. So after getting out of the company, I droppedby the station to look for a good restaurant for lunch. Then, when I was going down to the ground floor byescalator, I found a fortune-teller booth down there. Very much interested in it, I was magnetized to the booth.(とても興味があったので、占い師のブースに引き寄せられた) For these weeks I have been worrying about my romanticaffairs. Sometimes I cannot get myself focused on workor cannot have a good sleep. So, I wanted any advice about it, whether such advicewould encourage or discourage me. This was the very first time for me to see a fortune-teller. I felt much embarrassed actually when I wasgoing to the booth, but I had no other choice. The fortune teller said to me that I would be able tohave a good opportunity which would lead me to marriage. She talked a lot about how to get over the current situation.I cannot mention it here now. By the way, guys, please see the photo below: This young lady is one of my part-timers.She's a punk rock expert. She always helps me when I attend business shows. She is my right-hand person. On Nov. 10th, I took part in a business show titled"SOHO FAIR 2005".She helped me at this fair as usual. She is now expecting, saying that she is very happyto have a baby soon. She is one of the smartest, most charming, and wonderfulladies I have ever met.Her husband name is Kenji, too.I am very happy about this. When I was forced to go back to Fukuoka,I was so shocked. But it was right for meto get back here, 'cause I was able to meet thisyoung lady and other people like you all.The part-timer is talking about my translation service to the twovisitors. In this show, we gave a quiz about the logic ofJapanese to visitors to get them interested in logicalway of translation. ◎Fri. Nov. 25th---(2) I had to catch a 7:55 bus this morningto go to Tenjin.Tenjin is the central and busiest part of Fukuoka Citywhich is about 60-min ride away from Iizuka City.(バスで60分くらい)I was supposed to give two classes of English lessonat an occupational school I work for as an English teacher. I had two classes today. One was a supplementary class(補講) for oneof my classes I canceled last month. It was the first period, which starts at 9:20 a.m.Another class was the fourth period, which startsat 3:00 p.m. After the first class, I visited several customers of mine.First I visited Taiwan Trade Center Fukuoka Office. We had a good discussion about the translation workI am now responsible for.I now translate English-written Taiwanese corporate & product information into Japanese. My translation now appears on the website of Taitra Website(the URL of which will be forwarded to you later)According to their story, I will have to translate another600 pcs of information. I have got about 200 pcs of infotranslated into Japanese so far. I felt dizzy when I heard the number of information I have to(めまいがした)translate from now on!!! But this work becomes a main part of my financial resourcesnow. I have to tackle this hard & tough duty. After saying "good-bye" to them, I went to a publishing companywhich is the publisher of a monthly local economic magazinenamed, "ふくおか経済". As you may know, I write my column for this magazine.Today I met with an editor who is responsible for my column.I introduce her several kinds of my new translation servicesand asked her to put this information on the next issue of the magazine. She agreed on my proposal, saying that she would introduce my newservices on January issue. This activity is just part of my basic sales promotion.I do want to take nearly 100 % share in the localtranslation business in Kyushu.------------------------------------------- KEN SUETSUGU

◎ Tue. Nov. 22nd Key Word: Occupational School Got up at 4:30 in the morning and read a newspaperfor checking various articles or a wide range of information. As for my today's schedule, I was originally supposed to go to Daimyo, near Tenjin to teach English conversation at an occupational school named 福岡観光外語専門学校、Fukuoka Institute of Tourism and Foreign Languages. But it was canceled and I spent all day doing 添削 anddocument translation. This spring I accepted a job offer from the school. At first, I was very glad to get this job and teach Englishto younger generation, but gradually it became so tough andhard for me to run the translation business and do the teachingat the same time. (両立が難しく、しんどくなってきた)So, I am now thinking of quitting the teaching job at any occupational school except for a university. I have one class at this school and teach English 10 students(nine are ladies). They are seniors. All the female students are very active and charming. They say that they all enjoy my class.Almost all of them have already got an employment. In fact, half of them had already entered their companiesand started to work as an on-the-job-trainee(実習生).They are absent from my class in the second semester(後期).One of them is from Tagawa, near Iizuka City where I live. He was a student of my fellow translator when the translatorworked at a local high school as an English teacher.Small world, isn't it?(世間は狭いよね) This young man got an employment this summer and entered the company soon after that. After the first semester was over, he moved to Chiba and started to work for the company. But two months later, he suddenly quit the job and returned to Fukuoka.I heard two reasons for this from his classmates:1) He suffered from a strong homesick. He had never stayed outside his home before he started to work in Chiba.2) The job he took was quite different from what he had expected. Since then, he has not showed up in my class or even in the school,(私の授業や学校に出てきていない)although he has to come to school again to join his classes andstart a job hunting again. I hear he stays at home all day long. His school teachers e-mail him every day to encourage himto come to school, but it does not work yet. One of the teachers said that this young man must befeeling embarrassed since he unexpectedly quit the job at a very early time and hesitate to see his teachers andclassmates.(合わせる顔がない) Since this young man lives in Tagawa, or Chikuho District,I am going to introduce him lots of companies in this districtfor his job-hunting. The school teachers agreed on my idea.I know many companies in Tagawa or other areas in the districtwhich I can introduce him. Speaking of job-hunting, I have introduced companiesto my friends or students in these three years to help them get an employment.Of course, this is sort of volunteering activity.I have successfully helped over 10 people find and getan employment. They have been working at their companies since then. This summer, I introduced one of my customers(companies)to a boyfriend of my student. The boyfriend had been jobless for several months. So his girl friend(my student) was upset and strongly told himto get an employment. She said "Get a job or I'll leave you!!" during the summer. He got a job interview at many companiesbut he failed. So, I could not bear to see her boyfriend jobless (見るに見かねて) for a long time and helped him to get an employment at one of my customers. I am always ready to help my studentsget an employment and help them have a happy life. This is my policy as an instructor.

An ordinary teacher talks a lot (to his students). A good teacher just explains(to his students). An excellent teacher shows an example (to his students). The best teacher inspires his/her students. ------------ ◎「田中さんの話からこの製品を開発しました」 Tanaka-san's story inspired me to develop this product.

★Key word: communication This day was the last day of the seminar called "Sogyo-juku"All of the participants were supposed to make a presentationabout their own business plans on the last day. Let's see, we have about 30 participants in this seminar.80% of them are planning to quit their companies or change their career to start a new business. They include a local firefighter, a local elementary school teacher, a post office clerk and other government officials. The rest of them(20%) have already run their ownbusinesses and are planning to improve their businessachievement, using knowledge or skills they are supposed toobtain in this seminar. I belong to the 20% group. I joined this seminar to learn how to get my officeincorporated. Why?? It's simple.I would like to hire some of my pupils or deshis not justto develop my business, but also to coach them how tobecome an independent pro-translator and help themto be so in the future. I want to give highest priority on personnel development(人材育成), not on gaining my personal profits. In the morning, we had a two-hour long lectureabout financing from People's Financing Corporation(国民金融公庫). Seemed to me that many of theparticipants would need to get loan from the corporationwhen they start their own new business. On the other hand, I do have no intention toget any financial support from such organizations.I am going to or aim to run my business with no financial support(無借金経営).(The reason for this will be mentioned someday.) After the morning lecture, we all had to completeour business plans, and then in the afternoon, all of us made a presentation. As for me, I think I made it.One of evaluators (中小企業診断士) said thatmy presentation was excellent. He also asked me what was my weak pointin business management.I said "I have to admit that I am now weak atfinancial affairs and accounting(財務と会計), and soI have to study more about them from now on." At last, this 5-day long seminar is over. This seminar gave me lots of tips and hintsto improve my business. I am going to putthem in action(ヒントを実行) to get my businessfar better soon in the future. After the seminar, I was invited to a dinnerat the parents' house of my student.I teach English to their daughter.I used to teach English to the daughter and heryounger brother togeher until this summer.Since this summer, one of my deshis has beenteaching English to the brother.I am responsible for the daughter. An Australian young lady, a junior high schoolstudent, is now staying at the deshi's house. The deshi introduced the Australian studentto the brother and his sister. We had a dinnder together. Now, I have to admit that I failed to have a goodcommunication(heart-to-heart communication) with the Australian student. Not English problem!!!She's 13 years old, and I did not know what to talkwith her. My deshi and her sisters already asked hermany questions about her favorite sports or food, because they stayed together.I couldn't repeat the same questions now.So I was at a loss what to talk to.I think I shouln't have joined them this time andshould let them have a good dinner alone. When it comes to communication, I think I will fail to communicate with even Japanesejunior high school students, because they tend to hesitate to talk to strange adults, even though thoseadults are kind and gentlemen. I don't know what to talkto them. These days I think it is very hard and tough tohave a really heart-to-heart communicationwith all levels of generations. This is one of my new challengings I have to get over.

◎Sat. Nov. 19th ★Key word: unlucky day, private enterprise(proprietorship)個人企業 get my office incorporated法人化する What an unlucky day today!!!The Nov. meeting of Iizuka Toastmasters' Club wasscheduled to be held today. At first, I was going to join the meetingand actually I was assigned to make a formal speechfor this meeting. But I had to cancel it later. Nov. 19th was the fourth day of the seminar titled"Sogyo-juku", and I had to give priority to this seminar. Why?? According to the program of the seminar, the fourth day seminar was supposed to teach usthe procedures on how to get our business incorporated(法人化) and the details of New Company Law, which will beexecuted next May. Why could I miss this lecture?I had decided to take this 5-day long seminar to learnhow to get my office incorporated. That's why I decided to cancel the toastmasters' meeting. The session about the procedures for incorporation washeld in the afternoon, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. I was so excited to learn the procedures right before the session. The lecturer of the session was a local social insuranceconsultant(地元の社会保険労務士).I was going to be all ears (一心不乱に聞く)and try my best to learnall he would talk. In his two-hour lecture, he focused more on the current and future welfare pension systems, taxes, and other things related to social insurance. He mentioned nothing about the details of New Company Lawlet alone the procedures!! I got surprised. I should've attended the toastmasters' meeting, if I had come to know beforehand what he would talk. In the next session, one of the lecturers coveredthe previous lecturer and gave us the details of the procedures, though. I had introduced one of my deshi(弟子)s Iizuka Toastmasters'Club and she is now a member of this club. One of my correspondence students joined the today'smeeting from Fukuoka City as a guest. After the seminar, I met with her and she said that she enjoyed the meeting.I was glad to hear this comment from her,but at the same time, I was so sad that no otherpupils of mine in Iizuka didn't join the meeting, even thoughthey were keen in learning English and I recommendedthem to join the meeting several times.Only the above-mentioned deshi is now a member ofIizuka Toastmasters' club. Oh! I almost forget. One of my correspondence students, who lives in Kyoto,is a member of a local toastmasters' club.Toastmasters' Club is a nation-wide and world organization. It might be a good idea fro you all to join this club as a place whereyou communicate with others in English.

Friday. Nov. 18thThis is a true story, not a joke.As you know, I teach English both face-to-faceand through e-mail & Internet.I am very happy that all my correspondence-students(通信講座受講者の方々) are very earnest and keenin studying English. So I would like to continue orfurther enrich this type of English lesson as long as I can.On the contrary, I want to quit teaching Englishface-to-face (except for English lessons withfellow translators and my 弟子s) as soon as possible, hopefully by next Spring.Students in the face-to-face English lesson are not so serious. Some of them easily cancel a lessonwithout any prior notice, or suddenly,(even though I sometimescancel their lessons due to business reasons. I feel stressed when my students tend to cancel an English lessonwith me very easily, even if I have prepared a lot for a class with the student one day. This is one of the most inefficient matters for me.Today I finally finished a translation of over 300 pages ofa booklet. It's a technological booklet. Now that this work is over, I am going to start two kindsof new translation or English related services including to holdEnglish seminars for companiesI will put much more priority on business meeting translationand providing English lesson to companies than on documenttranslation. This evening I joined another international partyin Honami town. It was too cold outside, though. One of my 弟子s' families is now a host family toan Aussie young lady and so I was invited tothis party.Am I in a wrong path??I called one of my best friends to get some advice about my love affairs. This friend told me to be more practical and lookfor a new person to love.I think she must be right.I am wondering if I am in a wrong path.If so, I have to ruin the feeling of love towardthe lady I love now.Seems to me that I am doing something impossible. But she is so charming that I feel it difficultto give her up.By the way, speaking of a charming lady, this reminds me of Ms. K.I shouldn't have got Ms. K out of my school8 years ago, otherwise I would be able to date with herand marry her maybe.I announced that I had to get her out of my schoolon a day when a poisonous curry case happened in Wakayama.Whenever I see her on TV, Newspaper, etc., I cannot helpreminding this lady, one of my ex-students.Anyway, I have to make a firm decision soon aboutgiving up this lady or not.以上です。良くも悪くも、実際の事をかいております。ご参照ください。ご質問は何なりとどうぞ。末次通訳事務所 英語通訳 末次 賢治 拝

Today I have had a really hard time getting myselffocused on work since I have worried about whathad happened last night. I called one of my friends so many timesto get some advice from the friend. The friend said, "Ken, you have taken the mattertoo seriously. Take it easy and try not to be toonervous. Nothing seems to be wrong." In the evening, I watched movies titled"Miyamoto Musashi" and "剣に賭ける" to (Sprit as A Swordsman)get me inspired!! By the way, I have a great favor to ask you, all of my fellow English leaners(students). Sometimes I get shocked when you call meSuetsugu-san, Suetsugu-sama(末次様), orSuetsugu-sensei. Why such politeness?Polite(ness) means 丁寧 in Japanese. But, it also means that there is a distancebetween you and I. This is not 丁寧 inEnglish culture. Japanese 丁寧 is related to social distancebetween you and I.The farther the distance is, the more 丁寧.On the contrary, English 丁寧(especiallyin the States) means friendliness between youand I. When I communicate with you in English, let's have and enjoy Western way of thinking. Guys, why don't you call me Ken? In English culture, "Ken" is far more friendlythan 末次さん、末次様、末次先生. I don't like to be called such names. The above-mentioned friend sometimesmakes fun of me, calling me 鯰田sensei,Tsufu(gout) sensei, etc as jokes. But I thank her because she works asone of my romance advisors.

私は、元々、貿易商社に勤務しておりましたので、商業文書では、自ずと、商業的に訴求力のある英語表現を書くよう努めております。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー★例文--『弊社では、多種多彩なフランス・ワインを 取り扱っております。』を英語で言う場合、この紹介文を皆様はどう英語で仰いますか? 1)某翻訳ソフトでは次の様になりました。At our company, we handle the many colorful French wine. 詳細は省きますが、これはちょっとおかしいです。また、訴求力はあまりありません。 2)We handle many kinds of French wine.と表現する方が いらっしゃるかもしれません。が、やや商業的訴求力に欠けます。ワイン輸入業者の方でしたら、どの業者も上の紹介が出来るためです。 そこで、もっと訴求力(PRする力)がある英語表現にしたいものです。 業務紹介の場合、proud/proudly を使うのが良い方法です。◎proudを用いると、As a leading French wine distributor, we're proud ofour great variety of wines. となります。他にも言い方があります。◎proudを 副詞にしまして⇒proudlyWe proudly handle a great variety of French wines.となります。この proud/ proudly を企業の業務紹介やその他、学校や行政、他団体、組織の紹介に用いる場合があります。ken

◎ Mon. Nov.14th Key Word: Fellow TranslatorAs some of you may know, I have three persons who workwith me. One of them is a gentleman who lives in Iizuka City.He started to learn translation techniques with me last year. This summer, I started to introduce some of my customers(companies) to him so that he could work for them astheir translator. (For your reference, I think 通訳 and 翻訳 arethe same thing in nature. When I say [translator]in English, it means 通翻訳, not 翻訳 only.)In the last week, I introduced four orders of translationto this gentleman, hoping that he would continue to work forall the companies or persons who gave me their orders. I always give business opportunities (some of my customersor translation orders) to my 弟子s or business partnersso that they would be able to stand their own as a pro-translator. For your reference, I never take any commissionsby introducing translation orders to my fellow translators. Unusually other translators or translation companiesreceive commissions or brokerage fee(仲介手数料). I never do any commission-oriented business. This is one of my business policies. By the way, do you want to know the three personsI work with now?The other two are Mrs. xxx and Ms. xxxThe latter person is one of my part-timers.The above-gentleman is older than I am and soI don't think him as one of my 弟子.I think him as one of my fellow translators(翻訳仲間).

以前、聞いた話だが、その方(女性)外国で就職しようと思い、面接を受けました。☆これは実話らしいです。面接官:希望職種はありますか?女性: はい、私は経理などの頭脳的なお仕事を希望します。☆頭脳的なお仕事を、この女性の方は、 頭を使うお仕事、と言う事で、 頭=head お仕事=job、つまり、<head job>I would like to have any head job for you.

○ Sat. Nov. 12thAs you know, I have taken a specialseminar for entrepreneurs (起業家)hosted byIizuka Chamber of Commerce and Industry(飯塚商工会議所).Nov.12th was the second day of the 5 day-seminar.I learned how to calculate the breakeven point(損益分岐点) officially for the first time.I had known roughly how to calculate it,but didn't know the official way to do this. Also, I learned how to make business plan sheetin a neat and reasonable way.In the morning session, we had a classon how to use the Internet to look forand get useful business information.I am an expert in this field and so I sometimehelped the lecturer show other participantshow to use the Internet. My blog was introduced in the session, about whichI was very pleased.<by the way, the word, Blog comes from WEB LOG.I didn't know this.>The seminar finished at 17:00 and I got home. After that I gave two English lessons. At the first class, I taught a high school student. She's gonna take an entrance exam next week. She will have an essay test(in Japanese) andan interview test. For one month, I have taught herhow to think and write logically.I hope my lessons willhelp her a lot.I'm sure that she will make it in the test. Good luck.During the second class, I had a sudden visit ofMr. & Mrs. S***.They kindly brought me some souvenirs after theirhoneymoon trip and a photo of myself(making a speechin front of them). Thanks.Speaking of marriage or romance,as I said to you all in my previous e-mails,I have almost given it up, considering my age.But I have a lady I love now. She's very smart, cute and charming.I love her, but I think I should give upthis feeling because I have to follow my principle. As an English teacher, I have to draw a clear line betweenmy pupils and myself. There should be a high threshold between them. It's a really tricky situation for me.I am needing someone who is willing to listen to meand give me some good advice!!!

◎ Fri. Nov. 11thEvery Friday I have to go to an occupational school(専門学校) to teach English. The school is in Daimyo, near Tenjin, Fukuoka City. So today I had to go there, but I had to cancel it and focus more on translation work. Now I have been working on to translate the business promotionalweb site of TAITRA, Taiwan Trade Center. As for teaching job at the school, I am going tohave substitute classes on the week of Nov. 21st.I feel it tough to do both teaching and translating at the sametime, and so I don't have any intention to continue my contractwith the school next year. But I want to continue teaching at auniversity.I will introduce this position to Mao (Mr. Shimizu), a great English communicator living in Kotake.I translated over 20 pcs of English business information into Japanese, all of which appear on the website. As you may know, I went to Kagawa to join a localbusiness show which was held between Nov.1st and 2nd.I got at least 50 inquires from visitors.I already received orders from them.Seems to me that other translation companies don't joinsuch business shows. I think they should join a business showto develop or expand their own business opportunities.I worked for a major trading firm(貿易会社) for several years. The company is over 130 years old in Osaka.I was responsible for exploring and developing new products asnew flagships of the company. I used to attend my business showsto find distributors and other business promotional opportunitiesof the products I explored. That's why I have had an idea of takingpart in business shows in order to develop my own business. This is one of business promotional tactics I learned from the trading firm.By the way, you can find some of the products, for whichI was responsible at that time, at DIY shops or super marketsor car shops(like Autobacks) : They include Agip Oil, Toggler and so on.

Ken often takes "Suji-Chigai-Kaku" when he plays shogi. 例2)<~~する人は多い>は、 高校などで習う表現では、 The number of people who do-- is large.としますが、 これは、回りくどい、或いは、文章体です。 (ちなみに、~する人の数が多い、という風に 上記の形式で言う場合は、the number --is large.と largeを使います。the number is many.とは言いません) <関節技を得意とする選手は多い> Many judo wrestlers are good at submission holds. ですね <この会計制度を導入する企業は多い> Many companies have introduced this accounting system.

ken

◎Wed. Nov.9thToday I got several translation orders frommy new and old customers. All of them wereurgent. I had to change my priority in translationwork and get them done first. Many customers of mine tend to give meurgent orders. They also give me such ordersall of a sudden. This is one of big problems for me.I have to control my customers in a better andeffective way so that they can organize theirown ordering system.By the way, I almost forget a very important thingwhich I had yesterday.I received a pack of 大学芋(fried sweet potatoseasoned with caramel) from the college studentand three packs of pudding from the lady fromOita yesterday. They were delicious. I enjoyed thegood taste with tears.Sweet potatoes are alkaline and very goodfor gout. I want to express my sincere gratitudefor her here.Plus, I also received a box of fresh fruits fromTaiwan Trade Center, a big customer of mine. They said that they were very much concernedabout my physical condition. They are very kind actually. When Yamamoto-san,my deshi(pupil) had a wedding ceremony, they sent her message of congratulations.

◎Tue. Nov.8thYesterday(Nov.7th) I went to see my doc totake a pack of several kinds of medicines. Those medicines include 7 pcs of suppositories(座薬).I *feel too much embarrassed when I tried tointake this type of medicine from the behind, even though no one is with me.(座薬を入れるのはとても恥ずかしい)But this medicine works effectively and quicklyto get rid of pain caused by gout.My doc. recommended me to check my currenturic acid value on the spot and I followed hisadvice. A nurse took a small amount of my bloodfor inspection purpose and told me to be back hereagain tomorrow.Today I went to see my doc. again to check theresult of the current uric acid value. It was 9.2. The normal range of this value shouldbe between 3.6 and 7.0 for men.Actually I got stunned at a fact that my uric acidvalue hadn't improved for these two years, even thoughI had eaten too much vegetables just like a grasshopper orgreedy rabbit.Yet, I have to eat lots of greens from now on toreduce the value to the normal range.Today one of my correspondence students cameto my apartment to take my English training. She is from Kokonoe-Town, Oita. She comes here all the way from the townonce or twice a month. In the afternoon, another student came here. She's a college student and wants to have a jobusing English in the future after college.I had a joint English lesson with the two students.I made both of them talk to each other in English, but partially unsuccessfully.Well, I don't think we were able to have a good lessontoday. I should've had much preparation for this kindof joint lesson.---------------------------------------

Sunday, Nov. 6th.Got up at 5 in the morning.Still tired after five days of two business trips.Today is the first day of the seminar called"Sogyo-Juku" I have to or should attend.Sogyo-Juku is a seminar especially for those whowant to start their own business and/or whowant to get their business incorporated. As you know, I have run my own officefor 8 years, but my business is not incorporated yet. These days I've had a strong desire to get mybusiness incorporated. Why ??The answer is simple. I would like to hire one or someof my pupils sometime in the future. Now I have one pupil who I would like to employ,if things go well. For this reason, I do want toget my business neatly organized and sociallyrecognized as an esteemed company.Honestly speaking, I wanted to take this procedureafter I move to Tokyo. But I changed my mind, and I've just started this procedure here inIizuka. This seminar ended at 17:00 and I went toI-Town to buy some foods.By the way, seems to me that some symptoms ofGOUT begins to hurt me.I have a strong pain in my right knee.Boy, as the time goes by, I feel stronger pain. I have to see my doc. tomorrow morning urgently and will take a day off on Nov.7thI've been shocked. I have tried my bestto keep gout away from me, but in vain. It's really tough to live with this stinky disease.Ken
