◎ Sunday, Dec. 31st.I had three English lessons in the morning and another onein the afternoon. This year I failed to have enough time for house-cleaning.I just cleaned a bathroom, lavatory and kitchen.I am going to clean other rooms in the first weekendof January. I gave up completing the house cleaningby the end of this year.Usually I spend three days in cleaning my wholeapartment. This year I was so busy that I was not able to followthis routine. Anyway, I cleaned the kitchen up to 19:00 or later. Then, I rushed to a local supermarket to buy foods anddaily goods to prepare for New Year's Days. In the evening, I enjoyed watching martial arts matcheson TV. As for Ogawa vs Yoshida, Yoshida took the lead against Ogawafrom the very beginning. At the beginning of the match,Yoshida gave Achilles Tendon Lock (アキレス腱固め)to Ogawa. It really worked. Since then, Ogawa became slow in movingwith his foot heavily damaged. That's why Ogawa failed toavoid (Cross Arm Bar Lock).Achilles Tendon Lock is one of my favorite techniques. It is really good for controlling the opponent's movement.十字固め is also my bag. I love this submission hold(関節技).十字固め is just like English verb, "HAVE".Most of 格闘家 use 十字固め to control their opponents. It's easy to use and works efficiently and effectively againstan opponent. As for Akebono(64th yokozuna) vs ボビー・オロゴン(a TV talent),As I had expected, ボビー beat Akebono on points.ボビー is not a professional martial artist, but アケボノ wastotally controlled by him. I think アケボノ should quit his career as a pro-martial artist. He's been too overweight for fighting. If he wants to continue to be a professional martial artist,he should lose weight. In the year of 2006, I would like to come back as a (judo) wrestlerand sambist (sambo athlete).I have to lose weight first and then practice hard very much tocompete younger athletes. This is the end of this year.---------------------------------------------------------KEN SUETSUGU

◎ Friday Dec. 30thIn the evening, I had a dinner with one of my part-timers,named Hiromi-chan at a local pub.She has been working for me for over 4 years.I love her very much, because she's cute, unexpectedly smartand unsophisticated. She and I had a dinner after 9 months or more, and so I was very much delighted to have a dinner with her today. I found that she improved herself very much. She was a little bit selfish before, but I noticed thatshe became more generous, gentle and quickerto take appropriate action while enjoying dinner with her tonight. This is probably because she has experienced job-hunting activities. She's a senior at a local junior college, majoring in Education for infantsand young children. She would like to work at a kindergarten or nursing school. While doing her own job-hunting work, she must have successfullyadjusted herself to the actual severe society. This made me feel very happy about her and allowed her to eat and drinkanything she liked. I want to have a drink with her again.

◎ Dec. 28th & 29thNow I give a winter special English training to my deshiduring this week except for Dec.29th On 29th, I had an English lesson with one of my correspondencestudents. She's originally from Chikuho and now lives in Fukuoka. On her way back to her parents' house for spending this wintervacation, she stopped over my apartment to get an English lesson. I used an English tape and a video of American News Show totrain her in English listening comprehension. She takes other two English courses in Fukuoka City. One of them is by my friend, a fellow interpreter. After the two-hour English training, the student and I, togetherwith the deshi, went to a local restaurant called "Yajirobei" toenjoy dinner. I think all of us had a good time together.

私の座右の銘です(This is my motto.)。

◎ Tue. Dec. 27thOne of the dreadful things happened in my mom's store. As you may know, she runs a small shop, about 500 metersaway from my apartment. This day when I dropped in at her shop, I saw two workersfrom a major vending machine company working on a newvending machine. I just thought she was replacing an oldvending machine with a new one, and so I asked her ifshe was doing so. The answer was not what I had thought. Her shop has 5 or 6 vending machines. Two of them are for tobacco. The rest for beverages. One of the beverage vending machines was brokenNOT WHOLLY BUT PARTIALLY.Because someone (one or more thieves) tried to breakthe vending machine to take some money or productsaway from it in the previous night.Fortunately no money or products were deprived. The vending machine was heavy-duty and thief-proof. (頑丈で、簡単に中まで破られない)When I heard this news, I got mad. Since she didn't suffer from any actual damages(money orproducts), she did not report this case to the local police.I wish I had been there in the night when the thief(thieves) tried to break the vending machine. If so, I would've thrown them harshlyon the concrete ground, give them a submission hold named "十字固め" to capture, control and surrender them to the police. Guys, do you come to know why I live close to my parents' house with her shop? This is because I think I have to protect them fromsocial evils. Ken Suetsugu

This is the first day of the last week of this month and this yearYear of 2005 has been passing in a flash to me.(すごく早い一年でした) I started this year with the unexpectedly shocking incident, as you may know.(今年はとても例のショックな事からスタートしました)I have been still shocked and under the adverse influence(悪い影響) of the memory about this incident.(まだショックが続いております)Actually I have been so shocked that I lost my energy to keep my businessthought I would close my businessaround May or June.(5-6月に廃業を考えたほどです)(Some of my friends and students know this and have been encouraging me.) Actually, I still feel upset and shocked mentally even now. This seems to deteriorate my communication skills with young or new people. But I came to think that crying over spilt milk gets me nowhere.(過去の事を思ってもしょうがない) Today, in the morning, I had an argument with one of my customers. The company is a local electronics manufacturer.Every section in this company has a poor system for ordering usdocument translation. They usually give us orders very urgently. So, I criticized it and then advised them how to place an orderin a better manner. But they got upset at me.I don't care I lose this company, because I think I am right in this matter. By the way, I have not been feeling well since this morning.I would like to stop writing now. ------------------------Ken

◎ Sunday. Dec. 25th Today is Christmas which many people around the world must be celebrating.People in Japan also think of this day as a special event religiously or personally or commercially. Especially, young couples, most of them think so.But I dare to say why we celebrate earnestly the birthday of Christ only.I know that one of the main reasons is commercialism. I think we should think of April 8th as highly as Dec. 25th.April 8th is the birthday of Buddha, called "お花祭り".Seems to me that April 8th is now made light of comparing to Dec. 25th. I am insisting this not because I graduated from Bukkyo University. In principle, I don't follow any religion at all.(基本的に、私は無神論者です)If I should be forced to choose one sector of Buddhism to follow,I would follow Zen Buddhism.(但しあえて言うのであれば禅には興味があります)Every person has two sections in its mind: evil mind and good mind. Buddha is not a superman or a symbol of supernatural phenomenon.(お釈迦様は、スーパーマンでも超常現象の象徴でもありません)He trained his mind very hard, developed his good mind only and became completely free from influence of evil mind. So, all we have to do is to train ourselves to develop our owngood-mind-section through our daily lives. This is, I think, that Buddhism preaches us.In fact, if a person has successfully developed his good mind onlyand been free completely from any influence of his bad mind orearthy desires, this person should be qualified to be called Buddha. As you know, I admire Musashi Miyamoto, not because he was just strong, but because he was a man of self-discipline.MIYAMOTO, Musashi tried to be a Buddha in the way of swordsmanship.

★ Christmas Message Got up at 7:00, checked e-mails and read a newspaper for any useful information. I found a page of messages between family members, couples and friends who express their gratitude and love to their mates.I will use these messages as a translation drill later. I had two English lessons with two school teachers at 9:00 and 10:00 individually. In the first lesson, we read BUSINESS WEEK together.I love this magazine which contains lots of plain verbs.I am going to send list of useful expression to you all sometime next week. ★Christmas PartyIn the afternoon, I went to my deshi's house to join a Christmas party there.I wore SANTA CLAUSE costume for the first time in my life. Her students, elementary school students, her cousins and her sister joined the party. We enjoyed good taste of cake and sweets, and did several games.I joined the party just to add fun to the party. So, if they thought they had a good time, I don't haveanything to say. As a Santa Clause, I brought so manypresents for the kids and the sisters. I played catch with two of the elementary students.I enjoyed this very much, teaching them how to throwa curve pitch. I have my own method to throw a curve.Usually a pitcher has to twist his wrist when he throwsa curve. This method may hurt his elbow and wrist. But if he follows my method, he doesn't have totwist his wrist. If you are interested in my way ofthrowing a curve, please call me. I will teach you how to throw a curve. My own curve pitch does not just curve. It also drops about 50 cm before a batter.Sometimes it curves and drops. This is what I call <末次 ドロップ>. I do want to teach this curve to my son, when I have himin the future. But I've already given up marriage. So I have to find local baseball players to teach them this curve.------------------------------------------------------★Tutoring and My IntentionBy the way, early this summer, I introduced some children tothis deshi who had wanted to tutor as a part-time job. These kids are children of my adult students.Teaching English is also a good English training. That's why I strongly recommended her to do this.Plus, I had another reason to recommend her to do the tutoring.Their parents run their own businesses. They have a wide variety of connection with peoplein various fields. If the deshi can have a good relationship withthe students and their parents, she can have a good connection with(or have a good opportunity to know) many other people aroundthe parents. Such a wide connection will surely help her in thefuture. This is what I have been aiming at. At this stage, things are going well as I thought. This deshi is a college student and might be a little bit too youngto understand my deeper intention, but I hope that she will be able to understand my intention and goodwill more deeply and clearly as the time goes by. When she understands my goodwill more deeply and clearly, she will appreciate me more highly than she does now. I may have to wait for only a few years to pass until then, but I am strongly hoping that she will become a fine English communicator sometime soon in the future, taking every opportunity she gets from me and others. Today's Christmas Party was a lot of fun and was a good opportunity for me to think how I should be as her sisho(mentor). In addition, I really appreciate her for inspiring me to work harder. So I've decided to work harder for her at any cost. ----------------------------------------------------------KEN SUETSUGU

◎ Thursday, Dec. 22nd☆ Divorce of UCHIDA, YukiToday I got surprised at a news that a couple of UCHIDA, Yukiand Mr. Yoshioka got divorced.Uchida-san is my type: cheerful, active, short hair and big round eyes. So when they got married, I envied Mr.Yoshioka. I know him very much because he played "Mitsuo"in a famous movie titled "男はつらいよ".I heard that they got married after only a few years ofdating. They are not an exception. I hear that the number of young couples who get divorced has been increasing in recentyears. One of the possible reasons for this is, I guess, that such ayoung couple hadn't developed much deeper and firmerrelationship and communication before they married. These young couples are too optimistic.I have an impression like this:They marry just because they like or love each other.I think love is not the reason for marriage.Love is surely important for marriage but should be a reasonfor it.Today I was busy in preparing for a Christmas party to beheld on Dec. 24th at my deshi's house.I am really looking forward to this.I received 25 copies of two DVDs: Mocking Bird(アラバマ物語) andAn American Paris(パリのアメリカ人) each.I am going to send a copy of each film to you, correspondencestudents. These are Christmas presents to you all.

◎ Wed. Dec. 21stEvery Wednesday is the day of my English lessonwith the young deshi of mine.Today I taught her how to say things in English usingplain verbs, recommending her to use plain verbs more. For example, 「姉はOLです」.My sister works for a company.「田中さんは高校の先生です」⇒ Tanaka-san teaches at a high school.S+V+O is one of the most effective andefficient forms of English sentence, I think when we express ourselves. Besides, this form fits the logic of English.Once we get used to this idea, we will be able to communicatein English more easily. Then, in a section called "Today's Expression",I taught her how to use this verb "fix".I love this verb, since it has lots of uses.Guys, do you have any favorite words, especially verbs?I love the following verbs:"have, give, get, take, turn, inspire, fix, catch drive, back, move, run, send... etc."These are all we learned in our junior high school days. They form the core of English expressions.Guys, let's use them as many times as possibleto give life to your English expressions.Ken Suetsugu

◎ Tue. Dec. 20thWoke up at 4 a.m. and read a book in futon until 7:00 a.m.Just before 7:00, I turned on TV and checked the horoscope-ranking. Libra(てんびん座) is my star.Today Libra was in the second position which made me a littlebit happy. I sometimes check this ranking for fun. This morning I translated an abstract of a medical paperfrom Japanese into English. It took about an hour meto finish it. Then, I went to my fellow translator's house totalk with him about the occupational school.I asked him to call them today or tomorrow. They will have a job interview with him and discusswhat he is asked to do as a new lecturer.I crossed my finger , praying that he could get a teachingjob there.Came home around the noon and started to translateTaiwanese website into Japanese. In the afternoon, I had an English lesson with my deshi andher sister. I think we were able to have a good English trainingtoday. This deshi and her sisters will have a Christmas partywith her students. I'm going to join the party, wearing redclothes just like Santa Clause. I am really looking forwardto this party. This must be one of good opportunities for meto have a good communication with all of them.Comparing to the last Christmas season, I think I will be ableto enjoy this Christmas season much more with them.I have to thank from the bottom of my heart all the people around me. ---------------------------------------Ken

Some are 10-yen coins and others are 100-yen coins. Here are many kinds of coins.(We have many kinds of coins here.)Some show heads and others show tails. Your face shows (you don't want to do this). という場合は、Your underwear is showing. Some are accepted by a vending machine, and others aren't.

◎ Mon. Dec. 19thGot up around 5:00 in the morning.I was very busy in the morning with lots of things to do.Washing clothes was one of them.(洗濯もその1つです)Since I don't have a washing machine at my apartment,I have to go to my parents' house to wash my clothes allthe time. Now, let me tell you why I don't have a washing machine, car or other large-sized scale electric home appliances.I didn't have an air-conditioner until this summer. This is because these were not necessary for a personlike me who wanted to stay here just for a while until hemoved to Tokyo(上京を前提に生活していた為).But things have been changing and so I have to preparethem.Today I gave a 120 min.-long seminar at SOHO Support Center in Ten'jin, Fukuoka City. I taught many useful English expressions and how to make a good translation or interpretation to the participants. These participants were not regular members and tookmy seminar for the first time. They said that they hada good time with me.They will join another seminar of minewhich will be held on Jan. 30th.One of the participants was from Kanada Town. She was a very charming and cheerful lady whohad something around her(何かひきつける物がある).(Speaking of attractiveness, my deshi has also somethingaround her.)After the seminar, I dropped by my occupational schoolto have a meeting with their chief teacher about my teachingnext school year. The school wanted to ask me to be responsible for two or three classes, but I had to turn down their offer, because it was really tough for me to do the translationand the teaching from Iizuka.Instead of turning down their offer, I introduced one of myfellow interpreter who lives in Kotake Town as my successor.(後任として、小竹町の英語通訳仲間を紹介した)I am sure that he will have a good job at this school. This school has a good atmosphere and students are very friendly and keen in studying. Then, I walked to Sony Plaza to buy presents for myfemale students and grandstudents(孫生徒).As many of you might not know this, but I used todeal with 東急ハンズ、ソニープラザ、西武ロフト and otherfancy goods or D.I.Y.good department stores when I workedfor an Osaka-based trading firm.I worked at Planning & Development Division(企画開発部), enjoyingmy right as a member of P & D Division to explore or developany type of new & potential products unlimitedly.(無制限に、可能性のある商材を開発できる権限があった)I found several new products with potential marketability anddistributed them to the above stores.Guys, do you know "TOGGLER", "PERMAGLASS", and "AGIP OIL"? They are just part of products I imported.TOGGLER is very famous and well-known buildingmaterial. (建築金物)PERMA GLASS is a high quality coating liquid for yourcars. It sold very much in those days.AGIP is an exclusively authentic lubricant oil for Ferrari.(フェラーリの純正オイル)---------------------------------------------KEN SUETSUSU

◎ Saturday Dec.17th Today I joined Iizuka Toastmasters' Club.I was assigned to make a formal speech at the club. The following is the draft of the speech. Please enjoy it.---------------------------------------------------- <How to Practice English in Our Daily Life>KEY WORDS: English command/ everyday material/ multiplication 1)I am honored to be the first speaker of the last meeting of 2005.Let me start my speech with FOUR questions:1) Please raise your hands if you have been to other countries ONLY for studying English?2) Do any of you want to go to English-speaking countries ONLY for studying English?3) Please raise your hands if you go to or want to go to some English conversation schools to improve your English command. Now I have the last question: Have you all got your own way to develop your English command?―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――2)Whenever I meet new people and they come to know I am a translator, they ask me THIS QUESTION: Ken, you must have been to some English-speaking country for study before you became a translator. I always answer THIS QUESTION with pride. "No. Never."As you may know, I did NOT ever go to other countries for study.I ALWAYS trained myself to develop my English command ONLY HERE in Japan.I think that if you want to learn English, you don’t have to go to English-speaking countries or English conversation schools. Don’t get involved in their commercial competition. I think we can develop our English command up to a professional level here in Japan. If you really want to learn English, just use everyday materials as English training tools. I mean, MAKE THE BEST USE OF THINGS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE AROUND YOURSELVES. This is my motto: Don’t spend lots of money on English learning. Today I will talk about what I have done to develop my English command.Actually I developed myself various types of English training, using everyday materials and DID them all.But you can find one thing which runs through various types of my English training.3)Since this meeting has various levels of English speakers, so please allow me to talk about English training mainly for beginners: I have prepared one type of training for beginners today.―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――Now, I have two boxes in my mind: the size of which is around the same.Japanese Command Box and English Command Box. <I have two boxes> 1) <English Command Box>2)<Japanese Command Box> When I perform as an English translator, these two boxes are INTERCHANGED on and off automatically depending on who I speak for. Well, I have a question: What language do you use when you think? For example, <what should I eat for lunch?> <what should I do in this situation?>When you think of these things in your mind, which language do you use? We use our mother tongue when we think.Japanese use Japanese when they think. It’s natural, I THINK-----------------4)How about this case?1、 7、 6、 9 You see numbers on the white board:Kana, would you mind reading out these numbers IN ENGLISH as quickly as possible? You see, guys!!!As soon as she saw these numbers, she was able to read them out IN ENGLSH quickly as possible.AT THIS MOMENT, she recognized each number only in ENGLISH, NOT IN JAPANESE.I mean she thought in English. This principle is important and goes for all of us here.We are able to think in English when we have to read out simple numbers IN ENGLISH.AT THIS MOMENT, we can have an English Command Box in our brain. But the size is tiny, very small. So, if we develop this small English Command Box in our brain into the same size as OUR OWN Japanese Command Box, we are able to think in English and use English.5)So, what should we do to make the English Command Box as large as our Japanese Command Box? It’s very simple.Let’s say numbers in English EVERYDAY!!! This is a very good training.Speaking of numbers, we’ve already got a good material. It’s multiplication, what we call 九九. We all remember 九九. Therefore, we don’t have to spend a penny, even one yen coin on English training. This is called 末次流, which shines all the time in the darkness of the way of English training. Here is a multiplication table.(I must show the table of multiplication) 9 X 4 =9 X 5=9 X 6= Don’t you think it’s a little hard to think in English? So it is a very good training as a step to think in English, get used to English and develop our English command. I have many other types of English training. I will talk about them next time.If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me!

What do you want to be after (graduating your school) ?" Ken: I have two questions about English expression: "My grandma presented me this watch when I entered the high school." In this expression, is it correct to use "present" as verb?T: "present" is too formal. You can say "In the graduation ceremony, the clock was presented." But we don't say "present" amongus(family/friends).K: Next question comes from a Quiz show. "Which plays for Yankees, Matsui or Ichiro?" In this expression, "which" is a correct word ? or "who plays for--?" is correct?T: "Who--" is correct. Also, "which player is--?" is OK. but we don't say "which plays--?" とかwhich one is--? と言う意味合いで、Who is famous Japanese? Who are famous Japanese in your country? Shall I traslate that intoEnglish? W: I also would like to go to Kumamoto.Ken: Why?W: Because I like Musashi Miyamoto. I want to visit a cave in Kumamoto. K: Cross the street and walk a little along the street backward." Ken: Do you speak Japanese?F: A little.K: You mean you live in Japan.F: Yes, I married Japanese 5 years ago.と言う流れになりました。 三日目へ)---------------------------------------------また、春に、京都に参ります。★今度は、受講者の方も腕を上げているので、 更に良い練習になる旅行にしたいと思っています。ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーken suetsugu

◎Friday, Dec. 16thToday I had to have two English classes at the occupationalschool(専門学校) located at 大名.My school is located near 一風堂, one of the famous ramen restaurant in Japan, just 200 meters away fromthe school.I was supposed to be at the school by around 9:00 inthe morning, because my class was to start at 9:20 a.m.This was a supplementary class(補講).I caught a 7:55 bus at 新飯塚駅前 to go to 天神.Since this bus was supposed to get to at 天神、a 5 min.walkaway from 大名, around 8:50, I though I would be intime for the class. This bus goes through Yakiyama Bypass, an express way through Mt. Yakiyama. But I made one big mistake. This morning, the bus was caught in a heavy traffic jam due to snow fall. It took around over 90 minto get to 天神. So I was late for the class.I did not expect this at all and so I got perplexed.I should've taken a train to go to Fukuoka City.I had another English class in the afternoon.I am in charge of TOEIC Class. There are three teachers who are responsible forthis class, including me. So there are three classunder TOEIC Class. I am in charge of lowest levelof students.Today our class was the last class of this year.So we had a joint Christmas Party. In the Christmas Party, we did some games, watched a movie, Mr. Bean and exchange presentswith each other.I also prepared several presents for students.I think we had a good time together.Came home around 19:00 and had an English lessonwith a high school student.During the lesson, I taught her how to read English as quicklyas possible!!!By the way, I want to stop teaching at an occupational schoolas a guest lecturer. It is very tough for me to do the translation workand teaching. But today, they asked me to do teaching another year.I will have a meeting on Dec. 19th with them and probably I willsay that I will not renew my contract for another year.Instead, I will introduce my fellow interpreter as my substitute.

Got up around 6:00 in the morning!!Soon after getting up, I powered on my PC to check new emails. These days, I have received a great number of spam e-mails whichalways bother me very much.I had an English lesson with one of my fellow translators at 10in the morning. He went to China last week and so he showed me photos ofhis trip to China. After that, I had to confine myself to my apartment, doing the translation. I translated some information aboutMonde Selection, a famous worldwide quality competition on foods.According to the information, Japan has taken the first place for its widest variety of foods presented and the quality of these foods.I also translated the speech made by the president of theMonde Selection Executive Committee. He said that he enjoyedJapanese sake very much on a daily basis. After several months ofenjoying sake, he noticed that his hair began to grow.It was an interesting or funny story for me.I finished the translation in the evening. Then, I went shopping in a local supermarket named"Aso". Usually, around this time of a year, I make "oden" to eat.But this year, I don't make oden. I don't know why. While I was waiting for rice to be cooked, I prepared for the second-term exam at an occupational college where I teach English now.It was a troublesome work.I drank too much shochu tonight.------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

◎ Wed. Dec.14th Dec. 14th is well-known as the day of Revenge of 47 Samuraisfrom Ako on Kira.(赤穂浪士の仇討ち)I wanted to enjoy a movie of their story today, but I didn't.I had to enjoy my translation work, instead. Today I did the translation work all day long, listening tothe public hearing (証人喚問) of four people allegedly involvedin the false building construction calculation. Seemed to me that the four people and others who weren'tsummoned to the hearing worked together for this cheating. Around 6:00 p.m. the deshi came here to take my Englishlesson. Today we learned how to express things in Englishin a very efficient and effective manner. This deshi shows megreat potentiality to take over my translation method, and so I am very happy about this.(私の流儀を引き継げる高い可能性がありますので嬉しいです) At the end of the lesson, I gave her lots of fancy goods(雑貨)which will be used as presents at her own Christmas Partyshe plans to hold for her own students. ☆ A Friend from Kokonoe-Town, OitaI had received those fancy goods from a friend of minewho lives in Kokonoe Town, Oita. She is also a pupil of mine. The friend works at a local gas station as a part timer and receivesmany sales promotional items or goods(販促品) from its oil suppliers(仕入先).Sometimes she gives them to me, because I want to usethem as presents when I do story-telling called "Kami-Shibai"in English for local children at local elementary schools orkindergartens sometime in the future. ☆Encounter in SummerOne day in summer, 7 years ago, when I was walking around JR Hakata Station, I met her. We were waiting for the green light at the same side of the street. It was a hot day. She wore in black suits as if she had had to go to a job interview, what we call "リクルートスーツ". So, I talked to her, "It's tough to wear in black on a hot day like today, isn't it ? You MUST have a job interview today." She replied "Yes!". Then, the traffic light turned into green and we walked across the street. I began to walk faster than she did, handing my business card(名刺)to herand saying to her "If you have any trouble, please call me".It was the start of our relationship. We've had lots of things since then. When I tell this story to people, they call it "girl-hunting"(ナンパ).But it is NOT "nampa". Now we are very good friends. It took me at least one year to be able tohave a good communication with her. She's 10 year younger than I am.She is a nice person. It seems that I can have a longer relationship with those who I meton the streets than those who I meet at other places or throughother opportunities. It's a mystery about me. --------------------------KEN SUETSUGU

◎ Tue. Dec. 13th ☆ English Lesson with my Deshi:Today I had an English lesson with one of my deshis.Actually she has English lessons for two days of a weekif she is available on Tuesday. Today we focused on pronunciation, intonation andrhythm of English.I introduced her the following information, which is thebeginning of an essay. It goes as follows: ☆ Essay【"Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers" is a nationalproject launched in 1965 to help nation-building in developingcountries by personal contacts.Young volunteers are selected from among those who haveknowledge and skills in particular vocational fields.】 I think this essay has a good structure. I like this essay. That's why I picked out this essay. We practiced reading out this essay again and again, paying careful attention to articulation, pronunciation andintonation. Guys, I recommend you to learn this essay by heart. This essay must be a good model to introduce yourorganization, business etc. We also practiced pronouncing words containing"r-sound". ☆New Goal to AchieveAfter several weeks of consideration,I have found a new goal to me. I would like to employ this deshi, train her very hard so that she will be able to stand on her own as an English translator or communicator, only if she agrees. For this purpose, I have to rearrange my office as a corporateorganization first. I will try my best, I promise.I have decided to train her for as long as ten yearsin the most sincere and honest manner and gentleman.ship. ----------------------------------------------------KEN

It's "bullet-proof." proof " は、この場合は、"giving or having protectionagainst something harmful or unwanted. という意味合いで<害を与える事や望ましくない事に対して、 保護を行う、或いは、保護特性をもつ>と言う意味合いです。つまり、「耐性がある」と言う事です。bullet-proof glass/ vest は、防弾ガラス/防弾チョッキ ですねーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーこの言い方は、製品の特長紹介の際に見かけます。This watch is water-proof. 耐水性This safe is fire-proof. 耐火性 scratch-proof 傷が付きませんThis room is sound-proof. 防音室です。という意味合いですね★同じ様な言い方で、foolproof と言う言い方があります。間違った方向に進まない⇒確実な、という意味合いですねWe finally reached to this foolproof plan after a long discussion.「長い話し合いの末、ようやく、確実な計画にたどり着いた」こうした言い方を是非覚えて於いて下さい。日常的にも、或いはビジネス上製品の特性を紹介する際に覚えておくと便利な言い方ですねken

◎ Mon. Dec. 12th Today I had two appointments: one at my occupational schooland another one at Taiwan Trading Center.I had to give an English class today as a make-up class(補講) in the afternoon today. After that, I had a short meeting with the trade centerabout translation business. On my way home, I found DVDs of good & old movies.I bought two copies of a movie. Speaking of movie, I ordered two kinds of movies for all of you. When I get them, I will send them to you all as a ChristmasPresent from me. PLEASE LOOK FORWARD TO IT. Got home around 6:00 p.m.Talked with my friends on the phone for quite a long time. They are my good advisers. I asked them for assistanceabout my private matters. Suddenly, when I was checking e-mails, I got a new e-mail froma friend of mine. She is around 20. She asked me for money--100,000 yen--urgently. She said that she needed the money for receiving an operationfor abortion(中絶手術). I got stunned at this news.I am not her boyfriend. Please don't worry or misunderstand. I told her that her boyfriend should be fully responsible for the costs, if he really wants her to get the operation. These days, I hear that many young men tend not to use rubber(コンドーム) when making love with their girl friends. I also hear that if their girl friends become pregnant, many of them discard their girlfriends.I just hope that the boyfriend of this lady will take the full responsibility to take care of her. For young ladies, I just strongly hope that they will take the best care of themselves(自分を大事にして), they won't easily have a sex even with their beloved boyfriends before confirming the strong, everlasting love and affection which the boyfriends should show to them (彼氏側の強い、不変の愛情をしっかり確かめるまで、容易にセックスしないで欲しい), and they will have a good love. Half of my students are young ladies. So I just hope so.Because young men are usually hungry for sex.(Hに飢えている)(I used to be (and might still be) one of them and so I think I know what they want.(自分も他人の事は言われませんが、だからこそ、よく判ります)ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーKen Suetsugu

★ Mr. & Mrs. Smith I had a good news and a bad news TODAY: The good news was that I enjoyed one of the latestmovies titled, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" at TOHO CINEMASin AEON Nogata with my students. It was an exciting movie, but its story development was a little bit monotonous(ちょっと単調であった).It was about 120min. movie, but I felt it was too longer. Comparing to "Rhapsody in Blue", the 140-min. Gershwin's story, which I sent you all as a present, Mr.& Mrs. Smith made me feelthat it was a little bit longer.I feel that Gershwin's story is shorter than Mr.& Mrs. Smith, even though the former is actually longer than the latter, since the development of the story is multiplicate(多面的). I hadn't better describe (言わん方がいい)the story now, since you may watch this movie from now on. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is sort of a typical current Americanmovie, I mean, Shoot'em-Up Movie(撃ち合いの映画), I guess. Starts with sex scene and ends in violence. I like sex scenes of course, because I once was .......OOPS!!!!(I cannot say this now.) But I never like violent scenes. It was at least 7 years' interval for me to watch a movie at a theater , since I usually watch old movies includingStage Coach, Gershwin's story, and Miyamoto Musashi at home. The bad news is that... OOPS AGAIN !!! I cannot tell about it.Let me cut it off!!! I got home around 3:00 p.m., then I did a translation workuntil late at night, eating nothing all day long. When I got home, I was in the blue so that I was not able to eat anything at all. I couldn't sleep a wink, either.

◎ Sat. Dec. 10th Today I had five English lessons.Got very tired. In one of the lessons, we sang some songsof Mother Goose. It was a lot of fun.We enjoyed its wonderful English rhythm. I am now planning to start 将棋教室 for children. I love shogi as you all know and love to teach shogi to children. If I start shogi class, I will do this free of charge, of course. One of my students is a junior high schoolgirl. She has a younger brother, 11-year-old boy. This boy likes shogi very much.Whenever we meet, we play shogi (actually I advise himhow to control the opponent while playing).Every time I play shogi with him, he shows improvement. He's become stronger and more tactical.I am very delighted to see his improvement. I am planning to open shogi class for children next month. Speaking of classes other than English, two days ago, I got an inquiry from a man in Kitakyushu. He said in his e-mail that he would like to learn "sambo",which is Russian style of judo, from me. These days I haven't had enough time to exercise anddo grappling martial arts such as judo, sambo and wrestling. But taking this inquiry as a good opportunity, I think I willget back to the martial arts after several years. The following shows the results of my martial arts matchesI had 5 years ago. If I practice harder, I will get back in shape and be much stronger than I was. Ken Suetsugu ----------------For your reference:Three years ago, I was invited to the following game: ■2002年4・25 CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF 木口道場 <大会プログラム>1、少年少女レスリング公開練習デモンストレーション ・主なスパーリング参加選手:飯島昌子、宇野薫、五味隆典、山本聖子 2、会長・来賓挨拶。歴代門下生と特別ゲスト選手(現役/非現役)紹介 3、複合マッチ:3分2R制(1R:サンボ/2R:コンバットレスリング) ・中山博vs松本秀彦 ・草柳和宏vs竹内出 ・梶泰章vs末次賢治 The result of this is as follows: ◇複合マッチ:3分2R制(1R:サンボ / 2R:コンバットレスリング) ○松本秀彦 ×中山博 2-0 (1R 松本:4-0 / 2R 松本:2-0) ×草柳和宏 ○竹内出 0-2 (1R 竹内:4-2 / 2R 竹内:三角絞め) ○梶泰章 (こちらはプロの格闘家です)×末次賢治 2-0 (1R 梶:腕ひしぎ十字固め / 2R 梶:ヒールホールド) Because of lack of daily practice and aging,I lost the games one after another several years ago. ◎ Fri. Dec. 9thToday I was busy in translating a certain web sitefrom English into Japanese all day long. The web site contains a great number of informationon Taiwanese companies and their products.I translate corporate information and product information now.-------------------------------------------Currently I have to do both sales promotionalactivities and translation work at the same time.It is very tough. So, I am a sales person as well as a translator.Ideally, I would like to focus more on translation workfor the time being until I am able to fully recoverthe loss I suffered this year. But, at the same time, I have to do sales promotion so that I can secure translation orders several months ahead. If I employ one of my deshis I expect to work at my office,I would like to focus more on sales promotional activitiesand get as many orders as possible for the deshiand me.-----------------------------------★Determination:Some of my pupils asked me if I would close my office in Iizuka and leave for Tokyo soon or not. They must have read my diary last week. After several days of worrying over this issue,I decided to stay here for at least several yearsuntil my last deshis will be able to get good andpractical skills enough to work on their own asindependent translators.Besides, I have a good young student who would like tobe a pro-transaltor in the future after school.I have also decided to teach this student all I've got, ranging from translation skills to sales promotionalstrategies, so that the student will be a really great English communicator and business owner sometime in the future. After seeing them standing on their own, I willmove to Tokyo and work there, hopefully as a simultaneousinterpreter for broadcasting stations, for several years. So, ladies and gentlemen, especially those whoare in Chikuho District, please be rested that I willbe with you for several years to come.--------------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

◎ Thu. Dec. 8th:★ Yabusame Performer:Yesterday(Dec.7th), I got a call from a local resident. He's one of my individual customers. This gentleman is a famous person in Chikuho District(筑豊地区)and probably a little bit famous in the world. He runs his own horse-riding club in Shonai Town,15min. away from Namazuta where I live, and he is a yabusame(流鏑馬) performer. Yabusame is a form of Japanese traditional martial performance, that is to say, archery on horseback. This gentleman is sometimes invited to other countries to show his performance there.★FalconHe asked me to translate an English video tapeinto Japanese. At first, I thought it would be a video introducing yabusame. But it wasn't. The vide was about falcon.Falcon??? I wondered why it was about falcon. He said to me, "I keep a falcon(ハヤブサ), which suffers from a certain disease now. This is the second time thatthe falcon has suffered from a disease. Last time the birdwas sick, I took the bird to a local veterinary surgeon(vet:獣医)but the vet had difficulty in identifying what disease the birdsuffered from (病気の特定におうじょうした).Seems to me that even a local vet cannotdeal with a falcon, so recently I bought an English videotape which introduces us the types of diseases a falconeasily suffers from and how to protect the bird from such diseases. This time, the falcon has some spots on its legsand looks to be sick, and the video tape shows how todeal with the very similar symptoms to the ones my falcon has.So, would you translate that scene from English to Japanese firstand later please translate the whole explanation into Japanese for my reference?"Hearing his request, I said to him,"All right. Thanks for your inquiry.Anyway I need to check the scene you mentioned."He said that he would show up here in the afternoon tomorrow."That was what we talked yesterday (Dec.8th).-------------------------------------------In the morning when I was doing my translation work, I receiveda phone call from the customer who was supposed to be herein the afternoon today. He seemed to be in a hurry, saying that the falcon began tovomit (もどす) what it ate this morning and so he took an appointmentwith a local vet for his urgent inspection just ago.He said that he would like to drop in on me right now on his way tothe vet, asking me to orally translate the scene of the video from English into Japanese. Then, he would like to see the vet after understanding what the video explained. He added that the video also had a scene which showed a falconthrew up after eating.I said "All right, sir. I am waiting for you."The gentleman came here a while later, handing methe video. He and I started to watch the scene. This was the first time for me to watch a video about falcon. The video was shot in Dubai. This country is one of the leading growers of falcons. I didn't know this. According to the gentleman, lots of wealthy men keep falcons to show their own statusto others. He told me that the price of a falcon rangedfrom some million yen to hundred million yen. His own falcon was worth a luxury car(高級車一台分) and so he could not make the bird pass away easily.Despite some special terms I failed to understand,(because theywere names of viruses) I translated orally the scene from English into Japanese for him. After listening to my translation, he understood what was happeningto his falcon. He left here for the vet in Nakama City, 20 min away from here. He also asked me to translate the whole video for himand the vet.I have to translate the video by the end of this month. It might be a tough work for me, because I am not familiarwith falcon at all.------------------------------★ Negotiation for my deshi. In the evening, I visited a family. I once taught Englishto their 6-year-old dither two years ago.Only one time as a trial lesson. The girl was so clever and wrote down her name neatlywhen I had the class. Her mother was also smart and intelligent. So I remember them very well. But since then I 've had no chance toteach her English due to several reasons. In principle, I don't teach English to children. One of my deshis now tutors some children. She teaches them individually. One day she said that she would like to have one or two more students and I have wanted to introduce this girl to the deshi since early this summer They live close to each other and so it must be convenient for both of them to have English lessons.Plus, I think the girl must be an ideal student forthe deshi who is also smart and clever, too.Usually, in this case, I try to get in touch with them just by calling them, but I lost their phone number. I slightly remember where they live.(In fact, the deshi and I searched for their apartment in September)So I visited them again and talked directly to the mother. She remembers me very well. The mother seems to be still interestedin English education to her daughter.I talked to her about the deshi as a possible ideal teacher for her daughter. She asked me to make the deshi call her to have a meetingwith each other someday when the deshi has a time.I think this matter will go smoothly.------------------------------------------Ken

Mozart played the tune better than his rival. The scores were not touched by the fire.「楽譜は、焼かれずにすんだ」となります。

◎Wed. Every Wednesday is a real pleasure for me.I have a regular English lesson to one of mydeshis. This pupil is my deshi, not student.I see "deshi" and "student" differently all the time. What does "student" set apart from "deshi"? I define "deshi" as a student or a pupil of mine or a hopeful who wants eagerly to become a pro-translator or do work using English professionally in the future. On the other hand, I define "student" as a person whowants to improve his/her English command for their owncareer or for any other purposes , or even for fun. I usually introduce as many practical opportunities related toEnglish or English conversation as possible to my deshis,as you may know, in order to make them stand on their own. One of the corporate purposes of my own office is totrain those who would like to be pro-translators or pro-English communicators and help them get employment orbecome independent translators in the future. I am not after any profits or financial reward through my classes at all, but I am after the happiness they will get as the result of myinstruction. This is my firm principle and this also goes forcorrespondence students.-----------------------------------------------今日の授業では、先ず、英語の歌を2つ歌いました。 Today the deshi and I started our lesson with two English songs. These songs are useful for us to improve our pronunciationand intonation. After that, we practiced pronouncing short expressionssuch as "Give me a sec!" "Give me a five.", etc. Then, we moved on to the next training: Translation practice.Today we translated a short letter from Japanese intoEnglish. I introduced her how to translate or write the letter in English more effectively by use of logical thinking, introducing her typical patterns of Japanese logic shownin the original letter and how to change the Japanese logicinto English logic. I cannot show this letter to you, sinceit's a private letter. I hope that the deshi enjoyed our today's regular lessonwith me, understating deeply what I told to her.

★Key Word: Entering into the spouse's family register(入籍) (配偶者(妻・夫))What a HAPPPY feeling I have today!!!!In the afternoon, when I checked for new e-mails,a happy message came to my address. It was from Chie, a part-timer of mine from Shimonoseki. This young lady is expecting now(おめでた).Please refer to my Nov.24 & 25th diaries about her.She said in her e-mail that she and her husband just returnedfrom their trip to the city hall to get herself into the familyregister of her husband. I mean that Chie entered into herhusband' family register (入籍した).I am very happy to hear this news. She says that they have no intention to have their weddingceremony, because they want to spend money on their new lifenot on the event. But today is the day one for them as the legallymarried couple.I already sent them a set of small luck inviting Hakata dolls as a present the other day. But afar hearing this news,I would like to send something to them again to celebrate theirmarriage.I do love Chie as a precious friend of mine:Why???--- It's simple!I love this young lady; because 1) She's a lady of originality and uniqueness:(独自性がある) She has her own strong policy. She does not like to copy others. Neither do I.2) She is really creative: She designs and makes clothes like shirts. She knits many clothes to sell at a local shop. She is also going to apply her creativety to music management. I think she will manage or explore or develop some punk musicians in the future.2) She always improves herself. Chie was a little bit shy when she met new people several years ago. So, she did not show her smile to them, but I noticed that she became able to smile to new people she met year by year. When someone asked her to do some complicated work, she came to respond to the request with smile later. I am sure that she tried her best to improve herself. Now she is very cheerful and has got a good skill on how to enjoy social mingling.(社交術を身につけた).Some of my students know her and they are all surprisedhow nice she is and wonder how I did come to know her.Hopefully, I would like to introduce this young lady as myright-hand part-timer to you all someday in the future. This year, several pupils of mine and part-timers gotmarried. Hope that they will be happy forever. How about myself?I almost give it up, considering my age!!! What a life!------------------------------------Ken

◎ Mon. Dec. 5th.★ WeatherLast night, I went to bed, worrying a little bit aboutthe weather next morning.Woke up around 5:00. Then, I turned on TV to checkany weather report, wishing that it would be fineor free from rain or snow today.I had a dynamic schedule today.I had to go to two schools to have four English lessons:The first school was Yakiyama Elementary(八木山小)where I was supposed to have two classes just like I didback on Nov. 29th.The second school was an occupational schoolnamed, 福岡観光外語専門学校, Fukuoka Instituteof Tourism and Foreign Languages, where I had tohave two supplementary classes(補講).----------------------------------------★Yakiyama Elementary SchoolThe weather news said that it would be snowing and coldall day long in Chikuho District. I looked the outsidethrough the window, but it was still dark. Two hours later, the sky was still dark and it was windy andsnowing. so I decided to take a bus to go to the elementary.Last week when I went to the same school, one of my friend & pupils, Nobuko, drove me there. But today I was alone. For your reference, Yakiyama Elementary is on the topof Mr. Yakiyama, an about 800m tall mountain and alongthe Yakiyama Mountain Pass. In the downtown ofIizuka we had little snow on the ground.I took a bus for the bus terminal at a nearby bus stop, which stands in front of my apartmnt, and changed the buses at the terminal. At the bus terminal, I found several high school boys and girlswere sitting on the ground, smoking in their school uniform.I got mad at this situation and shouted against them, telling them to stop smoking and go to school quickly. I got on a 8:50 bus to Yakiyama Elementary. It was an about 20-min. ride from the bus terminal.Streets, woods and rice fields in the top area of Yakiyama werecovered snow. This was the first snow piled un on the ground for methis year.----------------------------------------★Shopping in English Today I did a shopping game with the 34 students.First, I had a 45-min class of 17 students. They are made up of the first three grades of students, that is(つまりは) 低学年.1) At the beginning of the class, I, together with the students, sang the song of Row, Row, Row Your Boat, dancing. We did this four times.2) Second, I gave them a test. I had them sing "ABC♪" in English. As I had expected, they sang, H, I, J, K, Then, I taught how to say this above part. H, I, J, K, L M, N, O, P, <エレムノーピー>These 6 letters should be pronounced in liaison. (連続音) 3) Then, I divided them into two groups: Shopkeeper and CustomerI had prepared paper-made money and items which are used in curry & rice.I demonstrated what a shopkeeper and a customer should sayto each other when they sell and buy vegetables.Since the students are too young or little bit youngto understand shopping, I used simple expressions. Hi ! →→→→ Hi! I want carrots.Carrots?→→→Yes.How many? → 4 carrots.4 carrots? → Yes.OK, here you are. →→ Thanks, How much?20 yen. →→ 20 yen?Yes. ←←← ←←← Here you are.Thanks.We practiced this sample of conversation between the shopkeeperand the customer. 1st & 2nd grade students sometimes were outof control, handling pretty paper-made money and vegetables. One of the teacher helped me.After several times of practice, I appointed somepairs of students and had each pair do their role-playing.All the students were very active. Girls seemed to like the paper-made money which one of my part-timer made.-------------------------------------------------------★ At a hamburger shop:In the next class, I was responsible for studentsof 4th, 5th and 6th grades:1) I started this class with ABC song.2)Then, we practiced the pronunciation of hot, dog, and coffee. I showed them the differences between American sound and British one of these words. I did this comically and the students burst into laugh.3) Then, I introduced them how to buy foods or beverages at a fast food restaurant, say Macdonald. I showed how to say each item in English. For example, フライドポテト should be French fries, etc. At that time, I showed them two different ways of pronunciation: British accent and American accent. It was just to make the students feel funny and laugh!! 3) Then, I divided the students into two: Shopkeeper and Customer. Hi ! →→→→ Hi! I want two hamburgers, French fries and a cola. Here or to go? →→ Here.2 hamburgers, French fries and a cola? → Yes.What size (of cola)?→→ Small.Small? →→→→ Yes. How much?400yen →→→ 400 yen?Yes. Here you are. → Thanks. Here you are.Thanks. This is 500 yen. Here is change, 100 yen.→Thanks.-----------------------------------------------We practiced this conversation so many times that the studentswould be able to learn this by heart. After the classes, the principal kindly drove me to SasaguriBus Stop and I took a bus for Tenjin.-ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーI had another two classes at the occupational school(専門学校). I, together with my students, practiced pronunciation ofb, v, l,and r sounds first. Then, I also taught useful expressionsusing coins.---------------------------------------------------★ Important Appointment with A familyAfter the classes, I rushed back to Tenjin Bus Terminal to catcha 17:00 bus to go back to Iizuka.I had a very important appointment with my students andtheir parents this evening. Today they invited me to their dinner to celebrate their second daughter's success in the entranceexam to a local university in Fukuoka. Their first daughter isa deshi of mine and the second daughter is one of my students.I was supposed to be at the designated restaurant at 18:30.(約束の場所に6時半に到着する事になっていた)I was really looking forward to this great opportunity, feeling myselfexcited so much.I met their father for the time time. He really looks to be a verygentle and calm father. I thought he must be a very good father tohis three daughters. I was wondering what their father was like allthe time, because I found out that his daughters are very charming, smart and nice.I talked mainly to the parents with a wide variety of topicsranging from the future employment situation expectedin coming years to professional wrestling(プロレス).To my great surprise, their mother is familiar with professionalwrestling. She is a really smart mother with lots of knowledgeand intelligence.I drank a little too much while enjoying talking with them.I envy this family, because the parents have three wonderfuldaughters who have a bright future ahead of them each!!All the three daughters are beautiful and cute. They will surely become popular in the world and attract a number of people around them who will bring them a greathappiness sometime in the future.I am really proud of these students, and I hope thatthey feel the same way as I do.(向こうも同じ気持ちなら良かばってんね)--------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

◎ Sun. Dec. 4thI got up at 7:00 in the morning.I had three English lessons at 8:00, 9:00and 11:00 in the morning. In the lesson with a local elementary schoolteacher, we read the cover story of an English magazine titled "Business Week"It was a very interesting story and full ofplain expressions. I will introduce you allthe expressions. In the afternoon, I talked with one of my friendsover the phone. She lives in Kokonoe Town, Oita. She said that it began to snow there.I hear that her town has lots of snow in winter sothat local residents can make kamakura(snow dome)just like in the northern part of Japan. Her town is one of the famous onsen resorts and hasso many onsens.Kabeyu (壁湯) is one of them.It is an onsen in a cave. I want to visit there againhopefully around お正月.This day I was feeling blue all day long, warring aboutmy love. In spite of feeling blue, however, I had todo some translation work in the afternoon. In the night, at 9:00, I watched a music show which wasbroadcasted on NHK. I enjoyed the splendid performanceby NHK' Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa. They played Beethoven's Symphony #5 and Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F.This concerto is the one all my student probably know, because this concerto is recorded in his biographical movie. One of the guest in the show mentioned about thismovie in the show, saying that he recently watched it.I love Gershwin's music. His music is full innovative sounds, combining jazz and classical music. My gloom was gone while listening to these two pieces of music.--------------------------------------Ken

◎ Sat. Dec. 3rdWoke up at 5 in the morning and watched TV showslying in my futon. It was a very cold morning so I hesitatedto get out of my futon. I wish I had a cat with me now whilelying in my futon. It would be much warmer. My parents have a cat named Mimmy. She is now 17 years old in light of human age.I am not sure how old she is in terms of cat age.People say that she is as old as a 90-year-oldwoman or older.Every Saturday is packed with face-to-face English lessons. I had five English lessons today.I failed to have an enough time to get my translationwork done today.I had an English lesson with a high school student at 6:00 in the evening. She's the one who passed theentrance exam this week. She's going to become a certified nutritionist(栄養士)and so take a course related to nutrition in her univ.According to her, when she got a certificate(合格通知) from the univ, she noticed an instruction fromthe college that those who passed the exam should be able to fillet a fish(三枚に下ろす) and do other types of processing and cooking by the time of her actual entrance. She also found a notice that those who passed the examshould learn English harder. The university sendsits students to overseas organizations to letthem learn cooking and other professional knowledge. So, I am going to teach her English in the field ofcooking, aiming to enable her to explain how to cook dishes in English.

Keyword: Entrance Exam Recommended move to TokyoEvery beginning of December reminds me that I stayedin Kyoto and took the entrance examination for BukkyoUniversity when I was 18, a third-year student atKaho-Higashi High School.I took two tests for English Literature Course on Dec.1stand Education Course on Dec. 3rd in 1984.It was 21 years ago. It was my first trip and stay in Kyoto.I remember that it was terribly cold in Kyoto.I got astonished how cold it was after getting out ofshinkansen at Kyoto Sta.I remember that I assured myself(確信した) that I would pass theexam for English Literature Course while I was taking the test.Because I was able to finish the 60-min English just within 30 min, even though other examinees were busy in solving theproblems. At that time, I did not expect that I would studyat the college for 5 years, not for 4 years.********************************************************Today I got a strong offer from one of my customers based in Tokyo. They recommended me to move to and work in Tokyo as soon as possible. After receiving this offer, I went to my parents' houseand discussed this matter with my parents.I cannot say the details of the discussion, but I would like totake a chance to move to Tokyo much earlier than I have expected. But I would like to teach the translation skills to my deshis to makethem stand on their own as professional translators.Since this moment, I have been swaying about betweenmoving to Tokyo soon and staying here in Iizuka.(Honestly speaking, I want to leave here for Tokyo ASAP,since I have come across bitter events recently.)I would like to know what my pupils, especially those whohave face-to-face English lessons comment about this matter.-------------------------------------------------Ken Suetsugu

◎ Thu. Dec. 1stKey Word: Entrance ExamOne of my students has the last English lesson today. She will be back here again next spring after her entrance exam, though. She's a junior high school student. A third-year student. She is going to take an entrance exam for a localhigh school named "Kaho High School" next spring. From this day on, according to her mother, she has to focus more on studying all the subjectsnot only English. That's why she has the last lesson todaywith me and will have a temporary absence for a whiletill this coming spring.Last year I experienced a similar case to this. One of my students said to me that she wouldlike to have a long but temporary absence because of her preparation for an entrance exam for universities. At that time, I did not think that she would come backto my class, but actually she did.The above junior high school student seeminglyis a good student so that I think she will pass the entranceexam for the school. At the end of the class, I gave her a luck charm as a present, praying good luck for her entrance exam.----------------------------------------------------Today is the first day of the last month of a year.Time really flies!!! I cannot believe this. How fastthe time is passing!!At the beginning of this year, as many of you may know,a heartbreaking event happened to me. It was related toa former assistant or fellow translator. She suddenly turned around on me and quit the job,(突然態度が変わり私を攻撃した)giving up the translation work she was responsible for.I have still been shocked by this incident, which has mademe very sensitive to ladies.--------------------------------------------------Ken

I have it now at home. You left behind your documents. I found your documents on the sofa after you left here. KEN

It is natural for the tenants to get mad at the companies. I don't blame them for getting mad at the companies. Nobody blames the tenants for getting mad at the companies.
