永六輔さん始め多くの方々がパーキンソン病に悩まされてきた。身の回りにも多くの
患者さんがいて苦しんでおられる。パーキンソン病は脳の黒質からドーパミンが分泌
されなくなって手足の震え、筋肉のこわばり、動作緩慢、姿勢が悪くなって転びやす
くなる等の症状がでて、最終的には嚥下や呼吸に関係する筋肉の障害から食べられな
くなったり、呼吸が出来なくなったりする病気である。治療にはドーパミンを体内で
合成してくれる薬などがあり、進行をある程度遅らせることは出来るが根本的な治療
法はなかった。
ところがこの度iPS細胞を使って黒質を造ってパーキンソン病のサルの脳に移植した
ら症状が軽快したとする研究報告が京大グループから出された。5年間副作用につい
とである。ここまできたら実用化は近い。ずっと先の話かと思っていたが今苦しんで
いる人達も対象になるかもしれない。大変な朗報である。
Many people have been suffering from Parkinson's disease as like as Mr.
Rokusuke Ei.
There are a lot of patients around us and they are suffering now.
Parkinson's disease is such that dopamine is not secreted from the
substantia nigra in the brain, and it presents the symptoms such as tremors
of limbs, stiffness of muscles, slow movement, poor posture and easy falling
etc. and it is related to the disturbance of swallowing and respiration in
the end stage.
Treatment includes drugs that synthesize dopamine in the body, and although
fundamental treatment.
However, the Kyoto University group issued a research report that the
symptoms were relieved when iPS cells were used to make the substantia nigra
and transplanted into the brain of Parkinson's disease monkeys.
They have confirmed that the monkeys will be fine as long as they keep track
next year. Practical application is near when it comes so far. Though I
thought that it is a long time future, people who are suffering now may also
be covered. It is a great news.
