Clarksville is a small town of about 270 residents neighboring the small city of Colebrook, which is actively remodeling and revitalizing its downtown area. Neighboring towns include Pittsburg and Stewartstown. Significant water bodies include portions of Lake Francis, Clarksville Pond, Carr Pond and Dead Water Stream.
This small town in Northern Coös County actually funded the fledgling Dartmouth College! Clarksville was incorporated in 1853, but known as simply as "Dartmouth College Grant" until 1872. Gradually, acreage was sold to support the construction of new facilities for the school in Hanover, about two hours south on the Connecticut River.
The Clarksville Freedom Trail is the only known trail in the North Country that will accommodate people in wheel chairs. This mile-long trail traverses wooded land and has several loops including difficulties of grades ranging from easy to intermediate. The trail is accessed from Bressette Road.
Hurlbert Swamp is a "must see" for birdwatchers, and is listed by the New Hampshire Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and the new England Audubon Society. Scientists classify the 313 acre marsh as a boreal swamp, meaning that white cedars are the dominant plant in the ecosystem. Access is made from West Road. Many rare species of birds nesting here, also contains several varieties of the rare lady slipper orchid (The New Hampshire State flower) can be found here.
Lodging is available at Rudy's Cabins and Campground. Rudy's is open from May through the end of the hunting season in November. Rudy's is a favorite of fishermen and other outdoor enthusiasts.
Northern Snowmobile Tours of Clarksville rents snowmobiles, or drivers can bring their own. They welcome of all skill levels, and offer lessons for beginners.
Dining is available in nearby Pittsburg and Colebrook.
The natural beauty of the Great North Woods can be enjoyed all year in Clarksville.
