NH Community Profiles: Jackson, NH

Jackson, NH

Jackson is named for Andrew Jackson, Seventh President of the United States. It is located in the heart of the White Mountains on Route 16, about ten miles north of Conway . It has been a tourist destination for nearly 200 years.

The railroad brought tourists - lots of them! In the 1920s, 40 trains a day traveled through the community. This fostered tremendous growth in the picturesque tiny town which offers many more lodging and restaurant establishments than you'd expect in a municipality of less than 1,000 people. The community remains popular today, not only for it's beauty and hospitality offerings but also its waterfalls and cross-county ski trails .

Noteworthy, the covered bridge in Jackson is one of the most frequently used in NH photographs. The "Honeymoon Bridge" as it is called, has been the witness to smooching since its construction in 1876.

As mentioned above, Jackson is ground zero for cute inns, bed and breakfasts, hotel, motels and resorts:

  • Carter Notch Inn
  • Christmas Farm Inn & Spa
  • Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club
  • Inn at Ellis River
  • Inn at Jackson
  • Lodge at Jackson Village
  • Nordic Village Resort
  • The Wentworth
  • Quality meals are easily had in town too. Many of the properties listed above operate dining rooms. Additionally, the Red Fox Bar & Grille , 49 Route 16, offers chops and steaks in a charming atmosphere. For casual fare or live entertainment, try the Shannon Door Irish Pub & Restaurant in the heart of Jackson Village.

Nestlenook Estate & Resort , Dinsmore Road, is an inn that offers sleigh rides and ice skating. The Jackson Ski Touring Foundation , 153 Main Street, is devoted to cross-country skiing, offering rentals and a variety of scenic trails.

For inns, scenery and dining, Jackson has many selections to choose from. And, just 15 minutes from downtown North Conway , it's great for shop-a-holics too!
