Located just outside Plymouth, at the bridge between the Lakes region and the White Mountains, the Polar Caves offer some great trails, and a bit of geology. Access is easy, taking exit 26 off I-93.

Unlike limestone caves, there are no stalactites or stalagmites, "those gothic-looking spikes that come from the floor and ceiling. These caves are granite�"formed by ice, and leaving behind smooth "vaults" in various shapes and sizes.

This place is perfect for active children, but can be a challenge for any of with middle aged spread, old football injuries or trifocals. Getting in and out of the smaller passages can be tight, to say the least.

The enjoyable series of boardwalks, bridges and trails connect the caves. This is a great way to spend a hot summer day…meandering through the cool walls of granite.

There are mining activities for children available at extra cost.

There are two seemingly peculiar gift shops, one of which specializes in collectible dolls, the other in exotic soaps.

There is a snack bar with hot dogs and pretzels, and picnicking is permitted. Plain Jane's Diner offers a more diverse menu, about half a mile away.

For a day of hiking and exploring, the Polar caves offers an offbeat series of activities that might be a family favorite.
