Lancaster, NH

The county seat of Coos County, Lancaster has a vibrant history, starting with its early days as a famous target of aggressive Indian attacks in the late 1700s.

It is also the home of the Lancaster Fair, widely regarded as one of the best annual events in the state. From the requisite tractor pulls and cotton candy to the horse shows and top-notch entertainment, this is a great time, on or around Labor Day weekend.

Weeks State Park is the former vacation home of John Wingate Weeks, a Massachusetts Congressman, famous for the Weeks Act. This legislation was signed by president Taft in 1919, and allowed for the expansion of national forests. The impressive stone lookout tower offers incredible views of the region.

In late June, the Greymist Fiddler's Festival offers an outstanding series of concerts, competitions and events.

The Northern Lights Drive In Theater, 51 Causeway Street, offers the retro-style pleasure of movies in the comfort..and, um, well, privacy of your car. Enough said. There aren't many drive-ins left, so soak in the nostalgia.

Dining in Lancaster includes Joshua's Grille, 39 Portland Street, which offers family-style meals, white tablecloths, and a cozy atmosphere. J.L. Sullivan's, on the Presidential Highway, offers meals in an Irish pub atmosphere. Scorpio's Pizzeria and Lancaster Pizza "duke it out" on Main Street.

Lodging includes the Coos Motor Inn and The Lancaster Motor Inn both on Main Street. The Cabot Inns and Suites are located at 200 Portland Street, U.S. Route 2. The Pine Tree Motel is located at 1034 Lancaster Road.

There are numerous campgrounds in Lancaster.

Don't just go for the great fair. Lancaster offers a variety of activities throughout the year.
