Listening Together To Old Time Radio

by Dan Crawford
Looking for something different to do on Sunday nights? Try The Big Broadcast at wamu.org . The Washington, DC National Public Radio affiliate airs some classic shows from the 1930s-1960s, including:
Dragnet
Gunsmoke
The Jack Benny Show
The Lone Ranger
Fibber McGee and Molly
Superman
Suspense
Johnny Dollar
This is a versatile form of entertainment, you can huddle up next to the speakers, and simply enjoy the shows, or you can pay bills, fold laundry or fill the wood box. Surprisingly enough, children can be captivated with radio shows. It's the old listeners create the pictures in their mind. From corn-ball comedy to spine-tingling suspense, this is great way to revisit the past.

Surely, there will be especially chilling episodes of the old radio dramas for Halloween and warm and funny chapters for Christmas.

The show runs from 7:00 PM -11:00 PM, and is hosted by Ed Walker , was elected to the Radio Hall of Fame in the category "Local or Regional - Pioneer" in 2009. Walker has been blind since birth.

One evening of old time radio may get you hooked. You'll hear celebrities in roles you might not expect: for example, the portly Robert Conrad, who would later play the morbidly obese TV detective Cannon in the 1970s, portrays the suave and intellectual voice of Marshall Matt Dillon in the radio version of Gunsmoke. Often, the original advertisements are included in the recordings from sponsors like Rexall Drug, Lux Soap and a variety of other vendors your children and grandchildren have never heard about.

This is free entertainment that may bridge the generations in your household. Well worth a listen!
