Overdraft Protection Rules Change
Consider These Overdraft Protections
Rules changed when Service Credit Union absorbed Guardian Angel.
If you were formerly a member of Guardian Angel Credit Union and your account was transitioned to Service Credit Union, you should make sure to understand these nuances of your new account. There are two overdraft protections to consider.
Share Transfer Overdraft Protection
Most accounts will automatically receive Share Transfer Overdraft Protection (STOP) for checks they have written, recurring debit card transactions and Automated Clearing House (ACH) debits. With this service the credit union will 'cover' those specific transactions from any available funds in your saving account, pulled in $100 increments.
For instance: You forget a monthly automated insurance payment that overdraws your account by $37.62. The credit union will pull $100 from your savings account, and add it to your checking account balance, so that the transaction will process. (You end up with the balance of that $100 remaining in your checking account.)
The credit union will charge you $5.00 for the service, but will only do this for you a maximum of 6 times per month.
You can sign up to have this service extended on your debit card to point-of-sale transactions. Suppose you present your debit card for payment in a store. If your checking account has insufficient funds to cover the charge, the transaction would normally be declined. With the extended coverage the service will raid your savings account to enlarge your checking account so the debit card can cover the transaction.
Courtesy Pay
If a transaction would overdraw your checking account by more than $25, but not more than $500 ($1,000 if yours is a direct deposit account), and the funds are unavailable in savings to precipitate the Share Transfer Overdraft Protection described above, then the Courtesy Pay service will enable the transaction for the nominal sum of $28 ($24 if yours is a direct deposit account). Credit union members who have subscribed to the extended Share Transfer Overdraft Protection will also receive the Courtesy Pay benefits on point-of-sale transactions.
There are no charges for overdrawing your account up to $25. Declined debit card transactions are charged $0.75. NSF Fees are $32. All fees for any of the mentioned services are posted against your checking account balances.
