The town is named after Milan Harris, a woolen industry tycoon who hoped to expand his empire to the Great North Woods.

Milan Hill State Park offers picnicking and hiking. There are also six campsites and four yurts available, however the sanitary facilities are pit/vault toilets: drinking water is available.
The Nansen Ski Jump was built in 1936, and decommissioned in 1988, however its steel skeleton remains visible today. It was a wonder in its day, and was constructed by a division of the Works Projects Administration (WPA), the agency of "New Deal" era that put people back to work during the Great Depression. A marker commemorates the location on Route 16 south of town.
Convenience stores offer sandwiches and the like, and dining is available seven miles south in Berlin . Lodging is available at the Mahoosuc Inn , or about 10 miles south in Gorham . Fishing and hunting are very popular in the area and varied recreation is available at Mahoosuc Outdoors .
Milan has small town charm, but enjoys its proximity to Berlin . The scenic, wooded views in the area are reason enough for a visit.
