Located at the intersections of Routes 25 and 109, Moultonborough gets its name from Colonel Jonathan Moulton, one of the wealthiest men in the colonies, before the Revolutionary War. It is sophisticated and stylish, with some of the best views of Lake Winnipesauke.

Actor Claude Rains ( Casablanca, Laurence of Arabia, The Invisible Man ) is buried in Moultonborough. Poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier was once a resident. Poet Robert Frost made his summer home here.

Remember Katherine Hepburn in On Golden Pond ? (The Loons! The Loons!) Well, Moultonborough has an entire nature center devoted to them! The Loon Center , 183 Lee's Mills Road, about one mileNH Loon Center is a great family attractionoff Route 25, offers educational programs and hiking trails for those who want to know more about the bird. Surprisingly high-tech methods for loon preservation are presented, so this could be an interesting trip for many family members. Admission is free.

Castle in the Clouds is the former unrestrained home of shoe tycoon Gustave Plant. The arts & crafts mansion was built with state of the art amenities, and makes the most of its mountaintop setting. For architecture fans, this one is a must! The property has frequent events, including summer weeknight concerts so be sure to check their program guide. The Carriage House Restaurant is located on the grounds and is open daily for tasteful lunches that have garnered high praise by the critics.

While in town be sure to visit the Old County Store at Moultonborough Corner. Erected in 1781 and a National Historic Site, you'll find nearly 5,000 square feet of diverse and interesting products, including keepsakes, weather vanes, apparel, gifts and so much more. With a 1950s-1960s feel, think of it as a gift shop on steroids -and- hormone therapy. It also holds a small free museum. DO stop here.

Dining includes the Lemon Grass , 64 Whittier Highway, reservations recommended, offering Asian cuisine that gets rave reviews despite its location next to a car wash. El Mariachi , a Mexican restaurant at 1094 Whittier Hwy., serves lunch and dinner. The Village Kitchen , 734 Whittier Highway, is popular with the locals, and will please you as well. Buckey's Restaurant & Tavern , 240 Governor Wentworth Hwy., is also available.

Lodging in Moultonborough includes the Lake Shore Motel and Cottages , 76 Lakeshore Drive, off Route 25 and a Rodeway Inn at 340 Whittier Highway (Route 25). For inn lovers, the Olde Orchard Farm , 108 Lee Road, offers just the right English touches.

Moultonborough is fine destination in itself, and can be a great stopping point on a trip from the seacoast on your way to the White Mountains.
