Enfield, NH

Enfield is a great town and includes the villages of Enfield, Enfield Center, Upper Shaker Village, Lower Shaker Village, Lockehaven, and Montcalm.

I-89, Routes 4 and 4-A and Route 10 all pass through town, and I-91 is just a few miles away. The part of town near Mascoma Lake was a Shaker settlement, a religious group that incorporated dancing into their religious practice, along with sexual abstinence. The Shakers left Enfield in 1923.

The Shaker Museum offers insights into the religious life and craftsmanship of the religious community. The campus is beautiful and immaculately maintained, and there are gardens and hiking trails, and a concert series.

Enfield native Stan Williams, known by announcers as "Big Daddy," was an imposing right-handed pitcher who ultimately became known as "The Hurt." At 6'4", 235 pounds he caused pain for opponents of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Saint Louis Cardinals, and finally the Boston Red Sox. His career lasted from 1958-1972.

Whaleback Ski Area is here, and while small, offers skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling trails. The town is also home to Great View Roller Skating .

Mickey's Roadside Café , 330 Route 4 gets high marks for diner style food with a high degree of artistry. Additional dining is available in nearby Hanover , Lebanon and West Lebanon .

There are several bed and breakfasts in Enfield:

  • Mary Keane House Bed and Breakfast
  • Shaker Farm Bed and Breakfast
