Sargent's Purchase, NH
Sargent's Purchase is an unincorporated township, situated wholly within in the White Mountain National Forest
. It contains about 25.9 square miles and is located between Route 16, and
Route 302, somewhat west and northwest of Jackson.
It's notable for its several mountain peaks, including Mt. Monroe (5,380 ft.), Mount Isolation , (4,004 ft.) and Stairs Mountain (3,468 ft.) and is crossed by a portion of the Appalachian Trail .
It's also home to Mount Washington (6,288 ft.), the tallest peak in the northeastern USA, and the famous Mount Washington Observatory . The summit is served by the Cog Railway , built in 1869.
The summit and surrounding 59 acres is also home to Mount Washington State Park . The park website states that the "Sherman Adams building, a modern summit building, houses The Sherman Adams Visitor Center, a cafeteria, restrooms, gift shops, the Mount Washington Observatory and its museum. The historic Tip-Top House is located adjacent to the summit building."
Numerous hiking trails criss-cross the township and their views are among the best for hundreds of miles.
Other than offerings at the summit, and an AMC rental hut at the Lakes Of The Clouds , there are no other services available within the township. Attraction bases (not within the township) have some limited services. Full services are available at nearby Gorham or Bretton Woods .
