M&T Bank Corporation operates as a bank holding company for Manufacturers and Traders Trust Company and Wilmington Trust, National Association that provides retail and commercial banking products and services in the United States. The company operates through three segments: Commercial Bank, Retail Bank, and Institutional Services and Wealth Management. It offers a range of credit products and banking services, such as commercial lending and leasing, letters of credits, deposit products, cash management services, commercial real estate loans, and credit facilities secured by various commercial real estate properties to middle-market and large commercial customers. The company also provides customers deposit products, including demand, savings and time accounts, and other services; automobile and recreational finance loans, home equity loans and lines of credit, credit cards, and other loan products, as well as residential mortgage and real estate loans; business loans, cash management, payroll, direct deposit, and merchant credit card services to consumers and small businesses through branch network, telephone banking, internet banking, and automated teller machines. In addition, it offers trustee, agency, investment management, and administrative services; personal trust, planning and advisory, fiduciary, asset management, family office, and other services; and investment products, including mutual funds and annuities, and other services for corporations and institutions, investment bankers, corporate tax, finance and legal executives, and other institutional clients. M&T Bank Corporation was founded in 1856 and is headquartered in Buffalo, New York.

    Earnings season kicks into high gear this week, with headliners that include several of the Mag7. Last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended down 1%, the S&P 500 lost 2%, and the Nasdaq shed 3%. Year to date, all three indices are in positive territory. The DJIA is up 8%, the S&P 500 is higher by 9%, and the Nasdaq has popped 10%. Earnings season is in its second week and the range of industries represented is expanding. Headliners include Novartis, Charles Schwab, 3M, Northrop Grumman, and General Motors on Tuesday; Alphabet, Tesla, Philip Morris, IBM, and AT&T on Wednesday; Intel, Union Pacific, Lockheed Martin, and Comcast on Thursday; and American Express and Verizon on Friday. Only 10% of S&P 500 companies had reported as of Friday. Earnings so far are up 26% from last quarter, with the Financial sector most heavily represented. The economic calendar is quiet this week. Turning to economic data and forecasts, gas prices ticked up last week, rising eight cents to an average of $3.86 per gallon for regular gas. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Fed GDPNow forecast for 2Q GDP is 1.7%, up from 1.3% last week but down from 3.0% a few weeks ago. The Cleveland Fed Inflation Nowcast calls for CPI of 3.3% for July, down from last week's estimate of 3.5%. Mortgage rates rose another six basis points last week, with the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage now at 6.55%, according to FreddieMac. The next rate decision from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) comes on July 29. Odds are at 14% for a rate hike at that meeting but have fallen since last week after better-than-expected inflation data was in the CPI and PP reports. Taking a deeper dive into performance so far in 2026, a leading industrialized global stock market index, the ETF EFA, is up 7% year to date, while the leading emerging market ETF (EEM) is up 16%. U.S. growth stocks are flat looking at ETF IWF, while value stocks (IWD) are up 17%. Crude oil prices continue to be volatile. On Friday, oil was at $81 per barrel, up 41% for the year to date. In other asset classes for the year to date, AGG bonds are down 2%, gold is down 8%, and Bitcoin is down 27%. The U.S. dollar is up 3%, tracking DXY. The VIX Volatility Index was about 18 on Friday, below its historical average of 20.
