Hi there, my name is Alexa, and for each month of Donald Trump's presidency, I'm tracking the real numbers achieved by his administration on BuzzFeed.
(AKA the unemployment rate, cost of eggs, gas prices, inflation, the Dow Jones, whether citizens received a stimulus check, and Trump's overall approval rating.)
Midterms are around the corner, and considering everything Republicans have looming — the war in Iran, record-setting mortgage interest rates, and a staggering cost of living — daddy Trump doesn't seem to be looking forward to it.
Things appear so dire that the gaslighter in chief has even started bragging about the US's poverty. "We have the best, uh, I guess you could say poverty," he told reporters earlier this week. "We have the best poverty numbers ever in the history of our country."
WELL! If you want to take a look at alllllll the numbers the US has to brag about right now, you're in the right place. Here's how Trump's economy fared in August 2026.
Note: Data on inflation is released a few weeks after each month has ended, so our reports will look at the previous month's numbers.

Unfortunately for the millions of Americans struggling to find a job in this doozy of a market, unemployment hasn't changed much since the start of the new year, and that's true for August as well.
For the second month in a row, the US unemployment rate was 4.1%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
On a positive note, the price per pound of 100% beef is slowly, sluggishly, glacially going down. It's wild to think that $6.77 is a "lower" price, but after seeing an average high of nearly $7 in April, we have to take what we can get.
Imagine going back in time and telling 2024 you that less than $7 per pound of ground beef is a steal.

Remember when Trump said the war in Iran was ending...and then he said it again...and then he said it again...and the average price per gallon of gas just kept growing and growing and growing? What? Too soon?
Yeah, well, across the US, the price is still volleying around the $4.10 mark. This time, the national average sat at $4.192 in August, according to the Energy Information Administration.
(Has anyone else been seeing those TikTok videos of people filling up their cars and increasingly getting stressed as the numbers barrel into the $100s?)
Inflation is higher now than it was the month that former president Joe Biden left office, and a whole point higher than January of this year. 😮💨
Though I'm sure you can feel it more than any number could describe it, I regret to inform you that the inflation rate has remained at 3.4% for the second month in a row.

The Dow Jones continues to report gains despite it all. So yeah. Rich people keep getting richer. We love to see it. (Note the sarcasm.)
Trump promised "DOGE dividends." Trump promised tariff rebates. Trump is currently promising checks if Republicans win out in the midterms...
... Will he deliver? NO, PEOPLE.
Dear readers of Economy Hate Watch , I bring to you Donald Trump's lowest approval rating since this newsletter's inception.
According to Reuters/Ipsos reporting , the 80-year-old's approval rating dipped to 33% in mid-August.
Note: Several previous months were reported using figures from Gallup. However, this newsletter switched to sourcing from Reuters after Gallup stopped tracking the president's approval rating.

Those are our stats for August. Now, let's look at comments we received on our last edition in a little section I like to call ✨Comment Corner✨.
Comment #1:
BUT THE DIVIDENDS. Haha, I'm just kidding.
You are exactly who Republicans seem to fear the most right now — someone who has been exhausted by Trump's second presidency (and perhaps the last 10 years of Trump in general), and the circus politics have become.
Many are planning to take out their frustrations on their ballots, and wow. Wouldn't it be something to have a lame duck president in 2026.
Comment #2:
The midterms can't wait to see you!
