Amazon.com ( NASDAQ:AMZN ) is facing a fresh labor flashpoint after a US labor board judge ruled that the company must collectively bargain with California warehouse workers at a San Francisco delivery center. The ruling followed Teamsters majority support among employees in 2024 and found that Amazon violated federal law by refusing to recognize the union.

Judge Michael Silverstein relied on the Biden-era Cemex precedent, which says a company must either recognize and bargain with a union that has legitimate majority support or ask the NLRB to run an election. Amazon did neither, according to the ruling. The company disagreed with the decision, said it plans to appeal, and argued that a court could overrule it.

For investors, the bigger story could be the precedent risk rather than near-term bargaining. The case may now move to the NLRB in Washington, where Republicans hold a majority and could possibly use the appeal to revisit or reverse Cemex. That would make this ruling an important labor-policy test for Amazon and potentially for other major employers facing union campaigns.
