Boeing CEO Says High Oil Prices Could Actually Boost Jet Orders — Here's Why

High fuel prices usually spell trouble for airlines, squeezing profits and potentially slowing travel. But Boeing CoCEO Kelly Ortbergsees a counterintuitive upside: when jet fuel gets more expensive, airlines have a stronger reason to replace older planes with more fuel-efficient models — potentially bringing some orders forward rather than simply putting them at risk.

Fuel Costs Can Pull Orders Forward

Speaking on Boeing's third-quarter earnings call, Ortberg said the company was in regular contact with airline customers navigating higher fuel prices. A large portion of Boeing's backlog is for replacement aircraft, he said, and those newer jets use less fuel than the planes they replace.

Don't Miss:

"For those customers who are bringing on new aircraft to replace older aircraft, these are much more fuel efficient and, in fact, the high fuel prices are driving them to really, really want these aircraft sooner," Ortberg said.

That distinction matters for Boeing. High fuel bills can make airlines cautious about adding capacity, but replacing an older aircraft can help reduce operating costs. The same pressure that threatens some growth plans may strengthen the case for upgrading existing fleets.

Boeing Has a Backlog Buffer

Ortberg said Boeing had not seen customers change their order-growth plans so far. The company's latest results show a record $745 billion backlog, including more than 6,300 commercial airplanes, giving it a substantial pool of existing demand to work through.

"If that should happen, quite frankly, given our oversold backlog, I think there's opportunity for us to shift around and manage through that," Ortberg said, referring to the possibility of airlines reconsidering growth plans.

That does not mean expensive oil will generate new orders. Boeing's point is that if some airlines delay expansion, it may be able to prioritize customers seeking replacement aircraft sooner. Its backlog could give the manufacturer flexibility to manage a change in demand mix.

The Risk Is Airline Growth

Ortberg acknowledged that overall airline growth is most vulnerable to high fuel prices. So far, airlines have largely passed higher fuel costs on to passengers through ticket prices, but Boeing expects to monitor the effects over coming quarters.

For investors, the key question is whether replacement demand can offset a slowdown in airlines' expansion plans. Boeing's backlog provides visibility, but it does not eliminate risks if fuel costs remain elevated or customers change delivery schedules.

Watch for order deferrals, shifts in delivery timing and airline comments on fares and capacity. The bullish case is not that high oil prices are good for aviation; it is that fuel efficiency may make newer aircraft more compelling even when the broader environment turns less favorable.
