From a Single Cargo to the Second-Largest LNG Exporter on Earth

Cheniere Energy( NYSE:LNG ) loaded its first liquefied natural gas cargo at Sabine Pass in February 2016. That made it the first company to export LNG from the US Lower 48. At the time, it was a pre-revenue infrastructure project. A decade later, it is the largest US LNG exporter and the second-largest in the world, and it shipped its 5,000th cargo in August 2026.

The terminals were the strategy. Cheniere kept adding liquefaction trains at Sabine Pass in Louisiana and Corpus Christi in Texas, reaching about 56 mtpa of combined capacity. It paid for the build-out by signing long-term take-or-pay contracts with creditworthy buyers and now has nearly 40 long-term counterparties.

Europe's Gas Crisis Turned Infrastructure Into a Cash Machine

Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine sent Europe looking for US LNG. It used that cash to grow its dividend, which management says has risen about 90% since its initiation five years ago, and to buy back stock. In 2026, conflict around the Strait of Hormuz cut global supply and pushed prices up again. Corpus Christi Stage 3 was completed ahead of schedule, adding more than 20% to production capacity.

Cheniere outperformed the index across every time frame. Cheniere's figures are dividend-adjusted, while the S&P 500 figures track price only. Timing helped: the five-year window opened months before the Ukraine invasion. The recent run has been steep, with shares up 71.12% year to date and 22.78% in the past month, after reaching a 52-week low of $184.88.

Contracts Anchor the Case While Hormuz Drives the Upside

The latest quarter was strong. Revenue reached $6.17 billion, up 39%, and full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance rose to $8.75-$9.25 billion. Cheniere Energy raised its quarterly dividend by more than 12% to $0.625, for a forward yield of about 0.76%.

The case for long-term compounding rests on contracted cash flow. Contracts with QatarEnergy run through 2054, management has committed to growing the dividend at least 10% annually through the end of the decade, and the forward P/E is near 16.

Income-focused investors face a thin yield, and this year's spike raises the bar for future gains. The main risk is a drop in spot prices. Management says a single spot cargo can add almost $100 million in EBITDA right now, and that windfall fades if Hormuz supply returns to normal. GAAP results also swing hard on derivative accounting. Those swings produced a $3.5 billion net loss in Q1 2026.

For retirement investors with a 10-year horizon, the contracted model is worth exploring. Contracted volumes cover the dividend and buybacks, and spot prices add upside. The yield is thin, so the return still depends mostly on dividend growth and share price gains.
