Jul. 2—Honda's Jeffersonville plant has begun production of lithium batteries for electric grid and storage purposes, not for EV batteries, the company said Wednesday, July 1.

L-H Battery Co. Inc. said it has launched lithium-ion battery cell mass production, more than three years after construction of the plant began west of Ohio 729 and south of Interstate 71, easily visible from the interstate.

The plant spans more than 2 million square feet and has more than 1,000 employees, the company said.

"As the market for battery cells continues to evolve, L-H Battery will remain flexible with its products and production," the company said in a statement. "Originally envisioned to begin mass production to supply battery cells for electric vehicles, the plant already has demonstrated its agility by pivoting to support (energy storage systems) as well as future production of hybrid-electric vehicle battery cells in North America."

Asked when production of EV batteries will begin, a spokeswoman for L-H Battery referred the question to Honda.

LG Energy Solution will sell its stake in the joint venture EV battery production site in Fayette County to Honda Development and Manufacturing of America for $2.85 billion, according to a Korean regulatory filing in December 2025.

The first battery cells produced at L-H Battery will be packaged into energy storage systems by LG Energy Solution Vertech, the U.S. energy storage division of LG Energy Solution, the company said.

These energy storage systems are delivered to customers who use them in grid-scale and other technology applications, including in residential homes, commercial and industrial operations and large-scale utility grids.

The systems capture and store electricity created by traditional energy sources like oil and gas as well as renewables like wind and solar.

L-H Battery Chief Executive Chahun Ku said such systems are "an important part of L-H Battery's future, along with production of battery cells for application in hybrid-electric vehicles."

"Nearly four years after the establishment of L-H Battery, it is gratifying to see the progress we've made together, from completing construction to establishing an entirely new workforce, and delivering meaningful economic benefits for the local Fayette County community," said Rick Riggle, chief operating officer at L-H Battery.

Global lithium-ion battery deployment in 2025 was six times that of 2020, according to the International Energy Agency, Reuters news service recently reported.
