Petrobras Makes Third Oil Discovery Offshore Brazil's Amapá Coast

Brazilian state-controlled oil giant Petrobras has confirmed a third oil discovery at its Morpho exploration well offshore Amapá, marking another exploration success in Brazil's potentially resource-rich Equatorial Margin.

The latest discovery was made in block FZA-M-59 in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, approximately 175 kilometers off Brazil's northern coast, in water depths of 2,886 meters (9,469 feet).

Petrobras said Thursday that further evaluation of geological formations identified another oil-bearing interval, following discoveries announced in August and early October 2026.

All three discoveries were made within the same exploration well, reinforcing the company's confidence in the petroleum potential of the largely unexplored basin.

Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard said the findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the company's technical approach and strengthen its optimism about future exploration opportunities along the Equatorial Margin.

Petrobras has completed drilling and geological data acquisition at Morpho and will now proceed with plugging and abandoning the exploratory well.

Following completion of those operations, the NS-42 drilling rig will relocate to the Potiguar Basin offshore Rio Grande do Norte, where it is scheduled to drill the Mãe de Ouro prospect.

While the latest discovery adds to the geological evidence supporting the Equatorial Margin's resource potential, Petrobras has not disclosed estimates of recoverable oil volumes or established whether the discoveries are commercially viable.

Further technical evaluation will be necessary before any potential development decisions.

The discoveries underscore Petrobras' push to develop new exploration opportunities beyond its established offshore production areas, particularly as the company seeks to replenish oil and gas reserves over the longer term.

Under its 2026–2030 business plan, Petrobras has earmarked approximately $2.5 billion for exploration along Brazil's Equatorial Margin, including plans to drill 15 wells over five years.

The region, stretching along Brazil's northern and northeastern coastline, has attracted growing industry interest following major offshore oil discoveries in neighboring Guyana and Suriname.

However, exploration remains subject to environmental scrutiny and regulatory requirements, particularly in the ecologically sensitive waters near the mouth of the Amazon River.

For Petrobras, the three oil-bearing intervals identified at Morpho represent encouraging early-stage exploration results. Their eventual commercial significance will depend on additional appraisal work, reservoir characteristics, development costs, and the size of potentially recoverable resources.
