Is IVA a good stock to buy?We came across a bullish thesis on Inventiva S.A. on BioEquity Watch's Substack. Since the thesis was published on July 31st, IVA shares have pulled back as investors weigh the upcoming Phase 3 NATiV3 results and the company's financing needs, but the trial results could still shape the drug's future. In this article, we will summarize the bulls' thesis on IVA. Inventiva S.A.'s share was trading at $3.6850 as of October 27th 2026.
This isn't the first time we see a biotechnology company pitched as a great investment. Unfortunately, IVA shares lost 20.75% of their value year to date. Comparable stocks like Viking Therapeutics and Madrigal Pharmaceuticals lost 29.25% and 24.39% of their value, respectively, during the same period. Why are drug development stocks declining so much and does IVA's recovery since June offer investors a reason to take another look?

In June, we published an article about the 10 Best Stocks Under $10 Offering More Than 50% Upside and IVA featured in that article. IVA returned 8.45% since then, rewarding investors who backed the stock despite its weaker performance this year. So, hedge funds were right about IVA. This article covers Inventiva's issuance of new European Investment Bank warrants and completion of its warrant restructuring. Before getting into our analysis, let's take a look at the business and why some investors like the stock so much.
Inventiva S.A. (NASDAQ:IVA) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing an oral treatment for MASH, a serious liver disease. Almost the entire investment case rests on one drug, lanifibranor, making this a high-risk, all-or-nothing bet ahead of a crucial phase 3 trial, with results expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Bulls believe the market is undervaluing the drug given its strong earlier trial results and the size of the opportunity in treating MASH. With the stock currently trading around $4.62, the bullish case points to a target of $7.50, suggesting upside of roughly 62%, and a successful trial could push the stock even higher, toward $12. But the flip side is stark: a failed trial could wipe out most of the stock's value.
The bullish case centers on how lanifibranor works. Instead of targeting one metabolic pathway, it activates three related receptors at once. Two of these help the body burn fat more efficiently and reduce fat buildup in the liver, two help lower inflammation, and together all three are meant to slow the liver-scarring process that causes MASH to worsen. Inventiva has bet everything on this drug, selling off smaller side projects to focus resources here. It already has a partnership covering the Greater China market, and a successful trial result could open the door to a bigger global partnership.
Earlier trial results support this optimism. Early-stage studies showed the drug is absorbed quickly, stays in the body long enough to be taken once a day, and was generally well tolerated even at higher doses. In a mid-stage trial of 247 patients with confirmed MASH, the higher of two doses tested showed a statistically significant improvement in liver disease markers without worsening liver scarring, along with signs of disease reversal. Some patients experienced mild weight gain, fluid retention, and temporary increases in liver enzymes, though these resolved on their own.
The key question now is whether these results can be repeated in the much larger, global phase 3 trial, where more patients and more variation in disease severity make consistent results harder to achieve. A positive outcome could validate the drug's approach on a larger scale, trigger milestone payments from partners, and strengthen Inventiva's position to sign a bigger global partnership — potentially setting up an FDA application in the first half of 2027. The drug is also protected by patents lasting into the mid-2030s, which could deter competitors even if the trial succeeds ( see how much one make-or-break readout could be worth to Inventiva ).
The company's limited cash runway is the biggest risk to this story. As of June 30, 2026, Inventiva held €233.9 million in cash and short-term deposits, but it burned through €48.7 million in the first half of the year alone. At that pace, its funds are expected to last only into the first quarter of 2027, leaving very little room for delays. It also has a €130 million debt facility tied to hitting certain milestones, with an additional €55 million available if the trial succeeds. If the phase 3 trial fails — whether due to weak drug effect, high placebo response, or patients dropping out — the company's single-drug pipeline could lose most of its value, and missed milestones could trigger debt problems and force it to raise money in a way that dilutes existing shareholders. In a worst-case scenario, the stock could fall to around $0.50 or the company could face insolvency.
Another risk for the stock is that successful trial results do not translate into commercially attractive insurance coverage. Regulatory approval would allow Inventiva to market lanifibranor, but insurers would still decide which patients qualify and how much they will pay. Inventiva warns that adequate reimbursement is not guaranteed, even if the drug is approved. If insurers restrict access or demand substantial discounts, sales could fall below the assumptions supporting the valuation. Securing coverage could also require additional evidence that treatment delivers value relative to its cost. This means clinical success alone would not establish a profitable business. In our opinion, the projected upside becomes harder to justify if reimbursement limits the revenue Inventiva can earn from an approved drug.
Hedge fund positioning shows a strong signal ahead of the trial results. As per our database, 35 hedge funds held Inventiva S.A. at the end of the second quarter, up from 24 in the previous quarter. This sharp increase suggests institutional investors are growing more confident heading into the trial readout. By comparison, Madrigal Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:MDGL) was held by 57 hedge funds, up from 47, Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ:VKTX) was held by 47 hedge funds, up from 44, while Structure Therapeutics (NASDAQ:GPCR) saw ownership fall to 50 hedge funds, down from 58. This shows institutional interest rising across most of the MASH sector, including Inventiva S.A., though it still trails all three peers in absolute hedge fund ownership.
Short interest data also paints a fairly calm picture for Inventiva S.A. relative to its peers. About 3.74% of Inventiva S.A.'s float is sold short, well below Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. at 12.19%, Structure Therapeutics Inc. at 14.48%, and Viking Therapeutics, Inc. at 21.44%. This suggests Inventiva S.A. is drawing considerably less bearish betting than all three peers, despite its trial risk, tight cash position, and reliance on a single drug, though lighter short positioning does not reduce the potential impact of a failed trial.
Valuation Analysis
IVA's P/B is 12.85x. Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Viking Therapeutics, Inc., and Structure Therapeutics Inc. trade at P/B multiples of 19.31x, 6.92x, and 1.11x, respectively. We believe the current valuation reflects expectations for lanifibranor's clinical potential, alongside significant concerns about trial outcomes, funding requirements, and dependence on a single drug. However, its premium to Viking and Structure suggests investors already assign considerable value beyond Inventiva's net assets, so the discount to Madrigal alone does not establish a bargain. Inventiva held €233.9 million in cash and short-term deposits at June 30, 2026, while first-half cash burn totaled €48.7 million, underscoring that its investment case depends on clinical success rather than current profitability. We believe IVA can justify its current valuation if phase 3 results confirm lanifibranor's efficacy and safety and sufficient funding remains available for the next development stage. If Inventiva delivers convincing trial results and advances toward approval without excessive shareholder dilution, the current valuation could offer an attractive entry point despite the risks surrounding its single-drug strategy.
Previously, we covered a bullish thesis on CRISPR Therapeutics AG (CRSP) by MADD-Scientis in March 2025, which highlighted Casgevy's commercialization potential, strong cash position, and broader gene-editing pipeline. CRSP's stock price has appreciated by approximately 38.93% since our coverage. We believe IVA could offer an attractive entry point if its phase 3 trial succeeds and it secures funding without heavy dilution, but its single-drug dependence and limited cash runway make it a high-risk investment.
