A closely tracked personalized melanoma vaccine met its main goal. Its effect on distant spread came in far smaller than an earlier study suggested in a late-stage trial. Moderna( NASDAQ:MRNA ) stock is down 7% to $185.74 in morning trading, a move that reprices the commercial upside of its flagship cancer program. That decline extends a selloff that started when the results leaked, and it reflects a judgment on how big the benefit is, since the trial cleared its primary hurdle.
Merck( NYSE:MRK ) co-develops the vaccine with Moderna and supplies Keytruda, the immunotherapy the shot is paired with in the trial; MRK stock is down 0.2% to $145.61. Meanwhile, BioNTech SE( NASDAQ:BNTX ) stock is down 3% to $85.65, a smaller slide for the other messenger RNA (mRNA) developer in the group. Pfizer( NYSE:PFE ) stock is down 0.2% to $29.96, essentially holding steady as the diversified drugmaker in the comparison.
Biotech as a group is moving in the opposite direction. The iShares Biotechnology ETF( NASDAQ:IBB ) is up 0.2% to $208.21, putting the sector fund on the other side of the slide in Moderna stock. Broader stocks are stronger as well, with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust( NYSEARCA:SPY ) up 0.3% to $762.27.
The Leaked Melanoma Data
The numbers leaked before a scheduled presentation. Moderna then released detailed late-stage results for intismeran autogene, its personalized melanoma vaccine, on October 22, set for a European oncology conference in Madrid. Combined with Keytruda, the shot met the main goal of reducing return or death risk, but distant metastasis results fell well short of the earlier mid-stage study.

Selling in Moderna stock is continuing this session. The distant-spread miss outweighs the main-goal win the company flagged in August.
Moderna's Single-Platform Model Takes the Hardest Hit
Moderna's business rests entirely on mRNA medicines, so the cancer vaccine carries an outsized share of its pipeline value, and that concentration helps explain why Moderna stock is sliding while the biotech fund edges higher.
BioNTech, an mRNA developer with its own cancer pipeline, has exposure that spreads well beyond this readout. Its shares are falling by a far smaller margin.
Pfizer's diversified portfolio protects it from any one cancer vaccine result. Merck, Moderna's partner on the shot, also has a much larger oncology business anchored by Keytruda.
What the Melanoma Data Means for Moderna
Moderna's next test is whether the full melanoma dataset holds up as the basis for a regulatory filing, since even with a weaker read on distant spread, a trial that met its main goal could still support that submission. Shareholders can watch for the filing plan Moderna lays out around the complete results.
Any recovery in Moderna stock may depend on whether the market comes to see a modest benefit on distant spread as commercially meaningful. BioNTech and Pfizer offer a reference point, since both companies carry pipelines that extend well beyond this one vaccine.
Reviewers at regulatory agencies would see the full dataset only after Moderna and Merck submit it, which keeps the shot's commercial outlook uncertain for now. Traders may prefer to keep their exposure smaller until the debate over Moderna's melanoma vaccine data resolves.
