What Novavax Doubters Overlooked

Trade Novavax on Coinbase

If you backed Novavax at the start of the year, the story looks very different now than it did on day one. For Novavax shareholders, the return from the start of the year was 36.0%, including dividends. If that decision sat in front of you again, you would be weighing a sharp revenue pullback, a fresh licensing model, and divided analyst targets. Were early buyers really paying for partnership optionality, or underestimating how narrow the vaccine portfolio had become?

The Two Stories Investors Were Debating On Novavax

The shares cost US$6.72 at the start of the period, and Novavax sat between two very different stories about what came next.

The bullish view saw a licensing centric model and partnerships as the main attraction, with a Fair Value of US$12.5, the price implied if its assumptions played out. That narrative leaned on analysts assuming revenue would decline 31.4% a year while profit margins settled at 16.0% and the future P/E reached 46.2x.

The bearish script focused on a narrow vaccine line up and harsher regulation, with a Fair Value of US$6 built on sharper 54.0% annual revenue decline assumptions. That side also assumed profit margins converged to 16.3% and required a much higher future P/E of 72.6x to support its view of the stock.

What The Results Changed For The Novavax Debate

The clearest new fact was Novavax leaning into licensing, with Pfizer, Sanofi and other partners paying upfront and milestone money. That supported the partnership-centric narrative. The financial statements, however, told a harsher tale. Revenue declined from US$239.24m in Q2 2025 to US$56.70m in Q2 2026, and net income shifted from a profit to a loss as net margin moved from 44.5% to a 94.2% loss. The evidence pointed in both directions.

The core debate centered on whether a licensing shift could offset shrinking COVID-oriented sales. When you look at another vaccine stock with a similar approach, focus on how quickly partner payments appear alongside total revenue and whether net margin is moving toward or away from the targeted level.

What Today's Novavax Price Already Assumes

Today's Novavax share price is US$9.7, while the selected Narrative's Fair Value sits below the current price based on its own framework. That view leans on Matrix M licensing and expense cuts needing to support a smaller reported revenue base.

A buyer at today's price is effectively counting on Matrix M royalties and milestones to become steady enough to support the leaner model, so the Narrative's concern around timing and reliability of those payments becomes the key assumption to test.

"While Novavax is broadening Matrix M collaborations with several large pharmaceutical partners, the sharp fall in reported quarterly revenue to US$57 million, with heavy reliance on irregular milestone payments, suggests that any delay or downsizing of these partnered programs could leave royalty and milestone income insufficient to stabilize revenue or support earnings."
