Arbitrum(CRYPTO:ARB) has gained 37.9%, rising to $0.19. In contrast, Bitcoin(CRYPTO:BTC) rose 7.1% to $83,290, while Ethereum(CRYPTO:ETH)—the blockchain Arbitrum is built on—fell 0.8% to $2,499. With one coin performing well, another showing steady growth, and one struggling, which of Arbitrum, Bitcoin, or Ethereum is the better investment for the coming year?
Arbitrum's upward trend looks even more impressive when viewed over a longer period. At the end of June 2026, it traded at about $0.08 and hit a high of $0.26 in September before pulling back. Despite its recent gains, it still trades 92.2% below its all-time high of $2.39. Current news does not clearly explain this 30-day rally.
Arbitrum Gets Ethereum's Security, but Its Fees May Not Reach ARB Holders
Arbitrum operates as a layer 2 solution, meaning it processes transactions on its own network and posts the results back to Ethereum for final validation. This design allows Arbitrum to benefit from Ethereum's security while providing faster and cheaper transactions. Users swapping tokens on Arbitrum pay significantly less than on Ethereum. However, the relationship between the network's earning potential and the value ARB token holders gain remains unclear.
Without solid data on Arbitrum revenue or usage rates, investors should treat market trends and Ethereum's performance as the primary indicators for ARB's price.

Bitcoin stands out as the largest asset among the three, holding a market capitalization of $1.67 trillion. It has also experienced the least decline from its peak value, facing a drawdown of 33.9%. Apart from Arbitrum, Bitcoin is the only asset among the three that has posted gains over the past 30 days.
Ethereum, with a market value of $305.12 billion, is down 49.5% from its all-time high. It has remained relatively stagnant over the last month, with a particularly challenging week showing a 4.4% decline. Despite having more room to recover than Bitcoin due to its deeper decline, Ethereum's lack of momentum raises questions about a potential rebound.
Ethereum's stagnation poses a challenge for potential Arbitrum investors. Typically, a layer 2 token amplifies the price moves of its primary blockchain. If Ethereum remains flat, Arbitrum may struggle to gain the same upward momentum.
Arbitrum's Small Size Explains Both Its 37.9% Gain and Its 92.2% Drop
Arbitrum's impressive 30-day gain is coupled with a severe drawdown and the smallest market cap at $1.27 billion. Ethereum is worth about 240 times as much as Arbitrum, making ARB sensitive to trading volumes that wouldn't significantly affect larger assets like Ethereum or Bitcoin. Consequently, ARB's price can rise rapidly when buyers enter the market and drop just as quickly when they pull back.
Despite the recent gains, no significant upgrade, partnership, or catalyst explains the rally. The momentum has cooled, with ARB increasing by just 0.4% over the past week and 1.5% over the last 24 hours. Without new data or a clear reason for the rise, investors may struggle to tell whether this increase will last or is merely a fleeting wave of speculative interest.
Is Arbitrum, Bitcoin, or Ethereum the Better Buy for the Next 12 Months?
In our view, Bitcoin appears to be the safest pick. It has the largest market value, the smallest drawdown, and a positive 30-day trend. Its value doesn't hinge on another blockchain's performance or unresolved questions about fee distribution among token holders.
However, choosing Bitcoin could mean missing out on potentially larger gains, particularly if Ethereum rebounds and fuels faster growth in Arbitrum. If Arbitrum can generate substantial fee revenue for its token holders, ARB could significantly outperform Bitcoin.
Bitcoin's biggest risk is a new decline that could reverse its gains and push its drawdown beyond 33.9%. Investors should watch its September 14 starting price of $78,175, about 6.1% lower than its current level; falling below this threshold could weaken its appeal. Conversely, if Arbitrum closes above its September peak of $0.26—about 36.2% higher than its current price—and Ethereum starts to recover, Arbitrum could take the lead from Bitcoin.
