Quick Read

  • A $150,000 split equally across Realty Income (O), Altria (MO), and Ares Capital (ARCC) generates $10,703 annually at a blended 7.14% yield.

  • Ares Capital contributes nearly half the portfolio's income at a 9.91% yield, but Q3 net investment income of $0.46 fell short of its $0.48 dividend.

  • Realty Income has paid 676 consecutive monthly dividends, while Altria has raised its payout 61 times in 57 years, anchoring the portfolio's reliability.

Retirees who no longer draw a paycheck usually judge a portfolio by one number: how much cash gets in each year without tapping principal. Social Security covers part of the monthly bills. The rest has to come from a source that keeps paying through bull and bear markets alike.

Dark blue and white awnings with wheat designs extend over the windows. There is outdoor seating with yellow and red striped umbrellas on a grassy patch in front, alongside a small green tree. A sidewalk runs along the front of the building, and a road is visible in the foreground.

High-yield dividend stocks can cover that gap. Putting $50,000 into each of three dividend payers, for a total of $150,000, would generate more than $10,700 of annual income at current prices. Here is how much each position would produce, why each yield runs high, and how well each payout is covered.

Realty Income

  • Stock #3: Realty Income( NYSE:O )

  • Yield (forward): 5.67%

  • Shares for $50,000: 869.9

  • Annual Passive Income: ~$2,834.03

Realty Income owns 15,536 single-tenant net-lease properties rented to 1,842 clients across 96 industries, with occupancy at 98.8%. REITs have to pay out about 90% of their taxable income, and that requirement keeps the yield high.

Coverage looks solid. Management raised 2026 AFFO guidance to $4.45 to $4.46 per share, well above the $3.258 annualized dividend. Fitch assigned the company an "A" rating, and the company has declared 676 straight monthly dividends. On the bull side, Realty Income put $2.6 billion to work in the third quarter at a 6.8% initial cash yield and opened a European joint venture with KKR. Cost of capital is the key risk: if borrowing costs rise, its about 170 basis point investment spread gets thinner.

Altria

  • Stock #2: Altria( NYSE:MO )

  • Yield (forward): 5.83%

  • Shares for $50,000: 656.0

  • Annual Passive Income: ~$2,912.62

Altria sells Marlboro cigarettes, Copenhagen and Skoal smokeless tobacco, on! nicotine pouches and NJOY e-vapor products. It also holds about a 10% stake in AB InBev. Its yield runs high because cigarette volumes are in long-term decline, which keeps the valuation low even as strong pricing power produces large amounts of cash.

Earnings cover the payout comfortably. Altria raised its 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $5.66 to $5.74, against a $4.44 annualized dividend. The 4.7% raise in August 2026 was its 61st increase in 57 years. A $1 billion buyback expansion and nicotine pouches, which reached 61.2% of the oral tobacco category, support the bullish case. Volume poses the risk: Marlboro shipments fell 6.4% in the third quarter.

Ares Capital

  • Stock #1: Ares Capital( NASDAQ:ARCC )

  • Yield (forward): 9.91%

  • Shares for $50,000: 2,581.3

  • Annual Passive Income: ~$4,956.12

Ares Capital is the largest publicly traded business development company. It makes direct loans to private middle-market companies in the U.S., and its portfolio covers more than 636 companies. As a BDC, it passes most of its taxable income through to shareholders, which explains its ultra-high-yield payout.

Coverage is the weak point among these three stocks. Third-quarter net investment income came in at $0.46 per share, short of the $0.48 quarterly dividend. Chief Executive Kort Schnabel still expressed "confidence in the current level of our regular quarterly dividend," pointing to a $2.5 billion investment backlog and the pending acquisition of MidCap Financial Investment Corporation. Ares Capital has paid stable or rising regular dividends for 17 straight years. The key risk is credit quality: non-accruals rose to 2.4% of the portfolio at cost, up from 1.8%.

What $150,000 Produces Each Year

Combined, these 3 positions generate $10,702.77 in annual passive income on a $150,000 investment, a blended yield of 7.14%. Ares Capital contributes $4,956.12, Altria adds $2,912.62, and Realty Income rounds out the group with $2,834.03.

The payment schedules also fit together well. Realty Income pays every month, while Altria and Ares Capital pay quarterly, so cash gets in throughout the year. A predictable payment calendar can matter as much as the headline yield when budgeting around fixed expenses (we laid out the full mix, payment calendar, and withdrawal order in a free guide to turning savings into a paycheck here: The Paycheck Portfolio Method).
