ABN Amro Shares Jump 7.9% After Profit Tops Analyst Estimates

ABN Amro Bank NV ( ABNRY ) delivered a stronger first-quarter update that could give investors a fresh reason to revisit the Dutch lender's restructuring story. Net income for the three months through March came in at 692 million, ahead of the highest analyst estimate and above 619 million a year earlier. The bank also improved its full-year cost guidance to about 5.5 billion, while shares rose as much as 7.9% in Amsterdam, the biggest gain since September. That reaction suggests investors were focused not only on the profit beat, but also on the possibility that ABN Amro's fee growth, net interest income, and expense control may be moving in the right direction at the same time.

The quarter was supported by several moving parts. Net interest income rose to 1.64 billion from 1.56 billion a year earlier, beating the 1.60 billion estimate, while net fee and commission income increased 20% to 608 million. ABN Amro said fee income was helped by the purchase of German wealth manager Hauck Aufhauser Lampe AG and by its clearing business, which benefited from elevated market volatility. Operating income increased to 2.29 billion from 2.15 billion, while operating expenses fell to 1.28 billion from 1.31 billion and came in below estimates. Loan loss provisions rose to 67 million from 5 million, roughly matching expectations.

For investors, the bigger story could be how this quarter fits into Chief Executive Officer Marguerite Berard's broader push to reshape the bank after a year in the top job. ABN Amro eliminated 528 jobs in the first quarter as part of a plan to cut 5,200 staff by 2028, though the bank said it expects a moderation in the pace of reductions for the rest of the year. Berard has also moved to pull back from less profitable businesses, offload a personal loan unit, and strengthen ABN Amro's retail banking presence through the 960 million acquisition of a Dutch competitor. The bank still targets return on equity of more than 12% and a cost-income ratio below 55% in 2028, while Citi analysts said ABN Amro is executing rapidly on targets and described it as one of the best ways to play higher short-term rates in Europe.
