Acerinox (BME:ACX) Q3 Earnings Showcase Margin Strength Amid Cash Flow Scrutiny

Acerinox went into its Q3 2026 report with the stock under pressure, down roughly 11% over 3 months and closing at €16.07 on 30 October. The company then reported a set of numbers that challenged that gloom. Net income reached €85m on about €1.6b of sales, with earnings per share of €0.34. For a stainless steel producer that is highly sensitive to operating leverage, the standout was profitability. Management highlighted Q3 group EBITDA of €199m and a margin near 12.5%, putting profit quality, not just volume, at the centre of this quarter's story.

Acerinox Margins Put Bullish Thesis To Work

The upbeat story on Acerinox rests on higher value alloys, a larger U.S. footprint and efficiency gains turning into sturdier earnings, not just higher volumes.

"The Beyond Excellence operational program, targeted to add €120 million of EBITDA by 2026 with €29 million already achieved, together with €16 million of realized HPA synergies toward a €23 million annual target, underpins a structural cost and efficiency improvement that can support margins even in periods of subdued demand."

Q3 EBITDA of €199m at roughly a 12.5% margin, plus 9M EBITDA of €470m, shows that efficiency and mix benefits are already flowing through despite management describing end demand as low and Europe as weak. For this part of the bullish narrative, milestones look on track.

Acerinox Bear Case: Cash Strain, Projects Still Unproven

The sceptical view hangs on execution risk in Acerinox's expansion push and whether cash generation can keep up with that spend.

"Large expansion projects in North American stainless, VDM and Columbus, and the planned HPA investments in Kokomo and Kentucky, are framed as contributors to an EBITDA upside of €300m. If demand in key sectors like oil and gas and chemical process industries stays weak, these higher fixed costs could dilute returns and constrain future earnings."

Q3 indicates this concern is not resolved. EBITDA is solid, yet operating cash flow is roughly flat year to date and slightly negative in Q3 after a €152m working capital build and peak net debt near €1.5b. Big projects are progressing, but payback is still mostly in the future while leverage and capex risk sit in the present.

Hunt For Quiet Earnings Power

Acerinox shows how a solid margin story can still leave investors debating the balance sheet. The real opportunity could sit in stocks where fundamentals outpace the attention they currently receive.

  • Company 1 - 25% below our estimate - earns rising fees on complex energy, water and security projects as newly acquired consultancies are pushed toward higher utilisation and group-level efficiency.

  • Company 2 - 48% below our estimate - sells maritime sensing and tracking gear whose add-on products and acquired sonar technologies are written into larger multi-year equipment and connectivity contracts.

  • Company 3 - 22% below our estimate - secures long-cycle defense programs where expanding munitions, vehicles and electronics capacity is paired with digitalised production to convert a heavy backlog into steadier cash generation.
