AIA, Prudential Chase Asia's Wealth Insurance Boom

AIA ( AAGIY ) and Prudential ( NYSE:PUK ) are moving more aggressively into Asia's private-wealth insurance market as demand from high-net-worth clients continues to rise. The shift comes as insurers look beyond mass-affluent customers and focus on Asia's growing wealthy class, where wealth flows into Hong Kong and Singapore, mainland Chinese investors search for higher returns, and geopolitical uncertainty could increase demand for asset protection.

The latest push follows AXA Group's launch this month of a new platform allowing wealthy clients to purchase insurance policies through its Hong Kong and Bermuda offices. This move could support demand for products such as indexed universal life policies, especially after Hong Kong relaxed rules last year to give wealthy individuals access to policies with cash value partly linked to a benchmark stock index. Jason Alleyne, founder and executive of Reimagine Risk, said geopolitical tensions may increase investment uncertainty and heighten fear around certain asset classes, including dollar-denominated bonds, creating opportunities for insurers to sell alternative insurance products.

Still, the expansion comes as China increases scrutiny of cross-border capital flows, a development that recently pressured shares of AIA and Prudential before the stocks pared some losses. The companies are also trying to catch up with early movers that have posted record premiums, including Manulife Financial, which sold a $300 million life insurance policy in Singapore earlier this year, surpassing HSBC Life's $250 million Hong Kong record in 2024. Both AIA and Prudential saw new business profit grow in 2025, supported by strong demand from Hong Kong and China, while AXA Greater China CEO Sally Wan said the insurer is initially targeting Asia clients before expanding the platform to other markets.
