Amazon (AMZN) Stock Slips As Q3 Earnings Reflect Profit Reset

Trade AMZN on Coinbase

Amazon.com just dropped Q3 2026 numbers that show a bruising hit to profit even as the business kept pulling in more sales. Net income landed at US$20.7b on revenue of US$201.9b, and earnings per share stepped down sharply from the unusually strong prior quarter.

The stock told a different story. Shares came into today already under pressure over the past three months and slipped another 1.4% in the latest session. That move appears driven more by emotion around the profit reset than by a calm read of the broader earnings picture, which reflected record operating margins.

Amazon AI thesis: early proof, heavy cost

Supporters argue the Amazon.com AI and cloud build can turn massive spend into durable, high margin engines.

"Rapid advances and adoption of generative AI, coupled with Amazon's deep vertical integration in custom silicon, proprietary models and agent tooling, are now supported by more than US$225b in Trainium revenue commitments and a chips business at over US$25b run rate, which can extend AWS high margin revenue and operating income growth."

Q3 shows real traction. AWS revenue reached US$46b with 38.7% margin and triple digit AI growth, and backlog is US$578b. The catch is that free cash flow over the last year remained deeply negative as the capex bill arrived ahead of those commitments fully converting to cash.

Amazon capex risk: contracts help, cash lags

Skeptics worry the spending cycle turns into a drag if long term deals fail to keep pace with the bill.

"The main thing that has to go right is that Amazon.com turns its very large AI focused CapEx program, including data centers, servers and satellite infrastructure, into long duration contracts that sustain strong free cash flow and attractive returns on invested capital."

The current picture is mixed. On one side, backlog of US$578b and multi year Leo and power agreements support the idea of contracted demand. On the other side, roughly US$220b of 2026 capex and a US$42.4b free cash flow shortfall show the cash strain is already material, and the share price has fallen about 11% over 90 days.

  • Company 2 - 47% below our estimate - use large AI infrastructure builds to power advertising tools and business messaging products that help marketers automate campaigns and customer acquisition.

  • Company 3 - 31% below our estimate - embed custom chips and software into networking, storage and security equipment that enterprise and cloud customers rely on to keep digital traffic flowing reliably.
