For the 12 months ended September 30, Amazon's free cash flow was negative $42.4 billion, compared with positive $14.8 billion a year earlier. Put simply, negative free cash flow means Amazon spent more on AI infrastructure than its operations generated. For retirement-minded investors, this signals a smaller buffer.
Still, Amazon repeated its expectation of $220 billion in 2026 cash capital expenditures, and management expects to spend "meaningfully more" in 2027. CEO Andy Jassy granted, "On the CapEx involved to grow the way we're talking about, it's meaningful."
AWS Growth Hands Amazon Bulls a Strong Counterpoint
Amazon Web Services (AWS) revenue grew 39% year over year (YoY). Jassy put the AWS annualized revenue run rate at $184 billion and projected growth above 40% in both 2027 and 2028. A $578 billion AWS backlog, cited by Jassy, supports that outlook.
Bank of America said investor expectations for AWS growth had run as high as 42%, which helps explain Amazon's cool reception. Advertising at Amazon grew 12% YoY, down sharply from 26% in the prior quarter, a possible concern as AI shopping agents emerge.
Wall Street Splits Over Amazon's Selloff
TD Cowen called the Amazon selloff excessive and kept its Buy rating, though it trimmed its price target to $340 from $350. Mizuho lifted its target to $335 from $330, while UBS raised its target to $352 from $348. Meanwhile, BofA lowered its target to $317 from $320.
Citizens made a steep cut to $275 from $315, and MoffettNathanson raised its Amazon target to $357 from $315. Koyfin's average 12-month analyst price target is $332.41.
Meta and Alphabet Extend Their Slides as Walmart Rallies
Meta Platforms( NASDAQ:META ) stock is at $613.10, down 2%. That leaves Meta Platforms stock down 17% over the past month. The company's October 21 report included a $9.89 billion settlement charge that dragged its EPS to $3.83, versus $7.40 without it.
Alphabet( NASDAQ:GOOGL ) stock is at $280.62, down 1%. The move follows Alphabet's October 28 report, which disclosed an $8.7 billion loss on equity securities that cut its EPS by $0.55. At the same time, Microsoft stock is at $528.48, down 0.3%.
Amazon's main retail rival is moving the other way. Walmart stock is at $123.80, up 2%. Over the past month, Walmart stock has climbed 16% as a defensive counterweight to the AI-spending selloff.
The NASDAQ Composite closed more than 1% lower on October 29 as Alphabet's slide weighed on the AI trade. Gartner raised a concern on October 14. It estimated that $3.5 trillion in AI infrastructure spending could face impairment by the end of 2030, a worry that helps explain why Amazon's AWS strength wasn't enough to offset its cash burn. We featured seven suppliers powering the AI expansion. For investors looking past the hyperscalers, they range from power to cooling in a free report you can grab here.
Amazon pairs a thin-margin retail network with a cloud arm that rents computing power to other companies. Meta Platforms relies heavily on advertising. Alphabet pairs ads with a fast-growing cloud unit, and Walmart runs a store-based model with far lower tech spending.
Amazon's Cash Burn Faces Its Next Test
Amazon's next challenge is whether AWS growth speeds up as new capacity comes online. Bulls see the backlog as proof the spending works, while the bears fear heavier 2027 outlays could keep free cash flow negative for longer.
Shareholders can watch for Amazon's free cash flow trend in coming quarters. A cautious approach could make sense until the debate over Amazon's cash burn resolves.
