Quick Read

  • AMC posted record quarterly revenue of $1.7 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $348 million, with Adam Aron declaring the company finally recovered.

  • A $1.3 billion stockholders' deficit, $3.7 billion of corporate debt and costly new loans undercut the recovery claim despite the record quarter.

  • Cinemark, a rival theater chain with $623 million of positive shareholders' equity, beat third-quarter EPS estimates and offers a stronger balance sheet than AMC.

  • Building a portfolio and living off one are two completely different skills, and almost nobody teaches the second. This problem is what The Definitive Guide to Retirement Income helps, and it is free today. Read more here. (Sponsor)

On November 4, 2026, AMC Entertainment( NYSE:AMC ) reported the highest quarterly revenue and adjusted EBITDA in its history. The company said it can finally call itself recovered.

On the earnings call, Chief Executive Adam Aron said that after six long years in unknown waters, AMC had brought its ship into port. He also said the skeptics who were writing the company's final chapter had been wrong.

Shares closed at $3.52, up 7.32%, for a $3.15 billion market value. They then fell 2.58% to $3.429 after hours, which is close to the 52-week high of $3.56.

The stock has gained 125.64% in 2026. It still sits more than 99% below a listed all-time high close of $625.50 on June 2, 2021, although that listing may not adjust for the 2023 APE conversion. The test is whether one record quarter earns the word recovered for a company that still carries a stockholders' deficit.

What the Record Quarter Proves

Revenue rose 31.6% to $1,711.1 million. Adjusted EBITDA (a measure of operating profit) jumped 183.7% to $347.5 million, and the margin expanded to 20.3% from 9.4%.

Attendance grew 28.3% to 74.9 million, and because each visitor spent an average of $12.73 on a ticket plus $7.87 on food and beverage, higher traffic translated directly into revenue.

Net earnings reached $109.3 million, or $0.12 per diluted share. A year earlier, AMC lost $298.2 million, or $0.58 per share.

This profit came from running theaters. The year-ago quarter took $196.0 million in losses on debt extinguishment. This quarter had no extinguishment gain and only $7.0 million of total other expense.

Free cash flow, which is a separate measure, also came to $109.3 million. A year earlier, it was negative $81.1 million.

Where the Recovery Claim Falls Short

AMC still lost $19.2 million over the first nine months of 2026, compared with $505.0 million a year earlier. Its trailing 12-month net loss was $146.6 million, and the company lost money every year from 2021 through 2025.

At September 30, corporate debt stood at $3.747 billion against $751.9 million of cash. The stockholders' deficit was $1.343 billion, and interest expense for the quarter was $130.0 million.

Later Maturities Come With Higher Borrowing Costs

The refinancing AMC completed on October 5 covered about 97% of its existing debt. It totaled $3.97 billion and pushed maturities out to 2031 and 2033.

Finance chief Sean Goodman listed three pieces. The first two, both due October 2031, are $2 billion of 8.875% first-lien notes and an $850 million first-lien term facility priced at SOFR plus 450 basis points. The third is a $1.12 billion senior secured loan at 11.25%, due October 2033. The deal extends maturities to late 2031, but borrowing at these rates will keep interest costs heavy.

Box Office Hopes Meet Dilution

October domestic box office rose about 35%. AMC expects full-year domestic and global box office to reach their highest levels in seven years.

Aron said 2026 domestic box office will easily cross $10 billion and that analysts see 2027 near $10 billion. He expects 2028 to be strong. These are forecasts, and a flat 2027 is the main bear case.

Shares outstanding rose 51.64% in a year to 892.60 million. That followed a 1-for-10 reverse split that took effect on August 24, 2023. Weighted diluted shares rose to 896.6 million from 513.0 million.

Aron discounted concerns of further dilution, but he also said AMC will keep using equity financing when it makes sense. He said he has not sold a share since January 2022 and bought more in spring 2026.

What Investors Need to Know Before AMC's Next Report

The quarter shows AMC can make money when the films deliver. But the deficit, expensive new debt, and the ongoing share issue make per-share gains hard to sustain.

Cinemark( NYSE:CNK ) is another theater chain with box office exposure and a stronger balance sheet. It reported third-quarter EPS of $1.04 against a $0.9425 estimate, and it has $622.8 million of positive shareholders' equity. Cinemark closed November 4 at $40.37, up 4.83%.

The key is AMC's full-year 2026 report. Positive annual free cash flow with no new share sales would weaken the bearish case. Any new equity offering filing would strengthen it.
