Apple Inc.'s AAPL shares gained about 2.6% on Tuesday as John Ternus officially took over as the company's chief executive officer (CEO), succeeding Tim Cook. The leadership transition marks the beginning of a new era for the iPhone maker after Cook's nearly 15-year tenure.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and most recently served as senior vice president of hardware engineering. He played an important role in the development of several key Apple products, including the iPad, Mac, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro. Apple announced in April 2026 that Ternus would succeed Cook effective Sept. 1.

Cook, who became CEO in August 2011, officially moved into the role of executive chairman on Sept. 1. During his tenure, Apple expanded from a roughly $350 billion company into a more than $4.5 trillion technology giant, while substantially increasing its services business and global supply-chain capabilities. In his new role, Cook is expected to focus partly on Apple's relationships with policymakers worldwide.

The transition comes as Apple faces significant challenges in artificial intelligence (AI), with investors expecting Ternus to accelerate the company's AI strategy while maintaining its strong product ecosystem. Ternus is also preparing for a major product launch next week, giving investors an early opportunity to assess his leadership approach.

Apple's strong share price reaction on Sept. 1 suggests investors broadly welcomed the planned succession and the continuity offered by Ternus's long experience within the company.
